Apple is a super conservative company so it makes sense they don't want to invest OpenAI given the corporate structure shakeups they have been going through. According to the article Apple still plans to include ChatGPTs AI in iOS18 though.

There's also companies like Anthropic which might be closer to Apple's values. Claude is better in some cases over ChatGPT.

From the outside it looks there are some people/culture issues and they have probably realised they can't influence that as much as they would like.

I imagine seeing several OpenAI executives leaving one after the other was pretty clear. :p

OpenAI is very impressive technologically, but Apple execs must have figured something was wrong considering the exodus of big names leaving OpenAI this year.

Perhaps those leaving will join Apple. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Anyway, the article on why some left … reads like OpenAI, might become Skynet due to lax security, and people don’t want to be involved in that.

I am a believer in AI. I can see a couple of reasons.
1) Apple no longer believes that OpenAI is the leader and that AI will be a commodity
2) Given the open source implementations that are available and how close they are to OpenAi, why pay, just implement open source with some apple magic.
3) Maybe they viewed it as a conflict of interest given they may want everyones AI to run on apple hardware.
4) Apple has seen something in the various labs and thinks it will win.

It’s likely due to this image of the attrition of the executive team that speaks volumes to the integrity and vision of the company.

My inference: Sam Altman has much disingenuousness, as displayed by his November 2023 removal from the company. Only due to his bizarre cult of personality by non-executives could he be brought back. This was an error, since many that rang the bells of his endorsement did not know him as well as the board that enacted his removal.

This public display of the internal turmoil is troubling and should give pause to anyone looking at OpenAI, and that’s not even touching their other controversies.

Apple not investing in them is going to be a winning move in the longer run. Google and Anthropic have better research and directions that are not tied with the same baggage.

Who knows, maybe Apple thinks OpenAI will be in the trashbin of history in the near future. Why should they invest in something they can make themselves. Recent iPhone keynote looked very cringe when they mentioned OpenAI each and every second for many features, felt much non-Apple.

Anyway current iterations of AI are nothing more but fun and toys and even somehow diminish many cultural humankind achievements. Back in the days companies touted AI as something that will calculate cure from every disease and something that will make us able to travel at the lightspeed and even back into the past, can’t see it happening anytime soon…

Been running 18.1 Siri can rewrite and summarize but can’t do complex searches or answer complex series of questions which is a huge bummer. ChatGPT does however so I can see the desire to integrate giving a quick answer to androids that somehow have been doing this for 5 years.

Good. It's not a good look to invest in someone who's entire value is based on stolen content. Their partnership is weird as it is.

I mean you're not wrong but that's kind of ironic considering the history of Apple, Microsoft, and Xerox.

AI is the worst thing that has happened to Tech the past 2 years. Apple should had just focused solely on Siri. That alone would had been significantly better than using tech that is very dangerous for the masses.
We need iOS 6 style of refinement 🥺 but perfected even more. Instead of this iOS 18 mess.

How do validate that statement in any way?

I bet Apple's plans are to let people pay for ChatGPT themselves, see how they are actually using it on their phones and computers, and then just make Apple Intelligence do those same specific things. ChatGPT is $30AU a month and I bet Apple could reproduce what 90% of people are using it for a lot cheaper. Once they know how people are actually using it, regular people I mean.

It has been happening since Apple Intelligence was first announced but it's finally complete. They have succeeded in downloading Craig Federighi's vast knowledge into the Apple Intelligence AI mainframe. All hair styling knowledge, even that thought lost to time are now available. ChatGPT is no longer needed.

Preamble: Apple user since 2010, the Mac made my day, every day.
Complete Apple environment at home, love it. (except for when it stops working for no reason)

My opinion on Apples decision ?
Great escape. Brilliant move. Almost too late.

I guess users have figured out by now, that any AI is a reckless Profiler.

...then you are not even eligible to have this AI profile changed or deleted.

...held against you if you want a job or anything else.

Not a single 3rd party AI does really compare with Apple ethics.

Old tech is the charm now. It makes me smile to play vinyls on the old Pioneer... and playing chess on the olive wood board with occasional eye contact while finishing the entire bottle of fine Sicily wine, waiting for the Ossobuco to be ready....Mmmmmh. The aroma fills the entire house. What a treat.

My refurbed 11Pro is a killer in terms of ROI. Safe from AI, I guess because it has not enough RAM.

The money saved by not buying new tech goes into quality time in real life (strictly non-digital) and the rest is buried somewhere in the garden :p )

Steve Jobs would have kicked Sams Buttocks over the entire Campus. Make a meme of that.

But maybe Sam is just trying to proof his original point of "AI is scary as ****! Don't do it. Be sincere instead."
