I think this is the right move. Why when you can just have an agreement as they have now? You do not need to spend billions propping someone else up. Also, OpenAI has plenty of investors on the sideline. I feel I need to always remind people that these are nascent times in AI, no one is "behind," certainly not Apple. Crazy to believe so. The principles of LLMs are well-documented, and research continues. Early Times.

ChatGPT is 1 out of like 20 Apple Intelligence features announced.
I don't know why people think Apple Intelligence IS ChatGPT & OpenAI.

It seems to me the answer is that many people believe AI is ultimately just a chatbot and not an underlying technology that powers, among many many other things, a chatbot

Look how fast we were able to get Maps up to par with Google Maps
The funny part is it still isn't lol. It's practically useless outside of USA. Apple Maps didn't even have public transport info for Paris last time I was there which wasn't long ago. Paris!! Google Maps has it everywhere, even in Eastern Europe, and non-capital cities where people still live (shocker, ik). Business info etc especially is no match with most businesses just missing from Apple Maps. Search (like with any Apple software - seriously have THEY ever searched for something in Settings) absolutely sucks.

Internally they're probably patting themselves on the back for the fact that (in most cases, with exceptions*) it doesn't make you drive off a bridge anymore 😵‍💫

Yeah, I’m in the US and the business database is still not great in AM. I find references to long out-of-business entities, or long in-business entities not listed, or even the wrong location for a business often enough that I usually revert back to Google Maps.

Good! Giving, sorry investing, money in a grifter such as Sam Altman would do nothing for Apple except attach themselves to his stench. The dude is pure techbro scum.

Even allowing a direct connection with his company is bad enough.

It’s possible Apple found out that they weren’t getting the privacy that they advertised, data was being collected and collated on each user o_O
The only way to do it right is to do it in-house behind their own firewall.

Totally agree. Apple's going to roll their own with a major emphasis on user privacy, along with ease of use for a wide variety of application scenarios.

Something the comments here are missing is OpenAI's recent pivot to become a for-profit organization. Previously, they were a for-profit company controlled by a nonprofit (not confusing or weird at all right?), which is likely what made Apple comfortable working with them. Sam Altman has been working to change this arrangement for quite some time - he wants to be just another Big Tech company.

Additionally, the "Bye Apple Intelligence" remarks highlight the folk that didn't pay attention to the WWDC presentation.

Hmmmm, we'll just do A.I. models from scratch ourselves. How hard can it be?
This seems to be the recurring pattern at Apple and they repeatedly find out that it is much harder than they think.

I'm recently retired from the insurance industry (IT). We went all in on AI/ML several years ago. We spent tons of money and from what I can tell we spent far more than we gained. I chalk it up to two factors: 1) AI/ML is a lot harder than it looks. It's not hard to go through the motions and come up with a model based on tons of data. It is another thing entirely to create a model that has real value. 2) There's not really any room for additional insights in the insurance industry. Once you filter out all the data you have but are not allowed to use, there just aren't new insights available using that data.

I suspect industry at large will figure this out eventually after a couple $Trillion are poured down the AI hole.

The departure of three of OpenAI’s top executives in a week should raise concerns. The only remaining founder left is Sam, and we know his history with the board. Their house does not appear to be in order.

I’m curious about LoveFrom’s position right now since they’re building OpenAI’s hardware.

Although a friend from Google confirmed the Gemini deal was done, which we all knew, even he didn’t know when it would be announced. It may be sooner than later now.

Probably just me, but I actually like the staggered approach to Apple Intelligence. Although they’re clearly behind schedule, it’s developments like these that may allow for adjustments. I’m just fine with everything in 18.1. The battery life is my only issue at the moment.

And FWIW, I think AI will be as ubiquitous as the internet in 20 years, and this current aversion to AI will be laughable when everyone is using it daily.
I don’t think it will take even 20 years. The tech is advancing so rapidly. The people who think it’s a con or a fad have absolutely no idea how much they do not know about the subject. They’re like that guy from 1996 who got famous for proclaiming that the internet will never replace newspapers. They just don’t know, and they don’t know that they don’t know.

Edit: Here's the article from 1995. Note that Mr Stoll considers himself something of an expert, having first gotten online in 1975. This article is exactly how it sounds to me when I read about AI being a fad or con:

Because the ChatGPT part is the only thing useful. I don't need something to summarize emails. :/
