With the discontinuation of the iPhone SE today, Apple no longer sells any "small screen" smartphones.

iphone-se-1.jpg

The smallest iPhone Apple now sells is 6.1-inches, with the iPhone 15, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 16 all coming in this display size. The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 16 Plus are available with 6.7-inch displays, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch display.

All of the discontinued iPhone display sizes with the device that introduced them are listed below:

  • 3.5-inches: iPhone (first-generation, 2007)
  • 4-inches: iPhone 5 (2012)
  • 4.7-inches: iPhone 6 (2014)
  • 5.5-inches: iPhone 6 Plus (2014)
  • 5.8-inches: iPhone X (2017)
  • 5.4-inches: iPhone 12 mini (2020)

With no iPhones left on sale with a display smaller than 6-inches and no rumors about any smaller devices in the pipeline, Apple seems to have abandoned the small-screen smartphone market entirely.

The SE was not a “small phone”, which is why people who ask for small phones don’t buy it. When we say “small”, we mean “small”. Like iPhone 4s was the last phone I could use one handed. Give me an iPhone 4s sized phone, and people who want small phones will buy it.

They are also no longer selling any iPhones with flicker free displays which is an issue for those of us who get eyestrain, headaches and migraines from flickering light sources. I'll try to manage for as long as possible with the 11 and SE 2022 because there is no upgrade path.

Customers want bigger screens to get immersed in their favorite apps on the go. It is where the industry is going. It’s staying that way.

I agree. Phones are not going to get smaller. But I wonder how much bigger they will get. The Pro Max display is approaching that of the iPad Mini. What is the limit? I guess we will find out...

I still remember the day everyone thought 4" screens were too large. And how they though the iPhone 6 Plus was TOO BIG at 5.5"

When Apple was pushing 4" as "perfect"- which was after a few years of pushing 3.5" as "perfect" nearly everyone around here ridiculed phablet-size phones: "abominations", developer fragmentation, one-handed use, gimmicks, pants with bigger pockets, man purses, etc.

And then Apple went phablet and its as if no such comments were ever written. If you dig into historical threads, you can find tens of thousands of posts very passionately ripping screens bigger than either perfection... until Apple screens grew... and that was met with comments like "how did we ever get by with those puny screens?" Apparently, those one hands just magically grew as well.

The lesson in this tale:
  • whatever Apple has for sale now is practically perfect in every way...
  • what others sell that Apple has not embraced now is "abominations/gimmicks/99% don't want..." and
  • what Apple used to sell is not as "iconic" and "ideal" as it once was (spun)... except where Apple may still be pushing it.
Since the "ideal/perfect" shifts with Apple's evolution, our collective opinions seem to not be nearly as solid as we write... sometimes with great passion... but readily move- even flip flop- in lockstep with whatever Apple offers now. The ramifications of this observation is simple: going forward, know what you are dealing with when considering input from a very biased crowd.

I went from iPhone SE 1st gen to iPhone 15 regular last year.
Waaay to big and heavy, and still useless to work with it.
I was hoping the new (S)E would be smaller and lighter, but again they went for "the bigger the better".

Do you guys seriously want a big sized phone? I mean, if you wanna watch videos, don't you wanna something much bigger, like an iPad or Mac (or tv, for the matter) ?

I don't get it.

I have not lost hope on future iPhone mini, but... damn they make it hard!
