"Apple greed"

It was reported during both "mini" product lifecycles that they were selling in significantly lower volumes than the larger phones. As I said earlier, Apple is not going to manufacture phones that only serve a small corner of the overall smartphone market. It doesn't make any financial or logistical sense.

I mean Apple's entire lineup serve a small corner of the overall smartphone market.

It makes sense to make options that create a good user experience for a wide range of people.

I disagree. The market for the 'Plus' models hasn't been that much better than the Mini was.

The resources required to do a 2 yearly Mini update would have been minimal, and yes sales would have been far lower than the other models, but as I said, plenty of other phone makers would have been thrilled with the sales figures of the 12 Mini for example.

The number of times people have looked at my 12 Mini (and then 13 Mini) and said "I would have bought one if I knew about them"... I don't think they were well marketed, and Apple would rather sell higher margin larger phones anyway.
People running a nearly $4 trillion market cap company disagreee.

Ooo yeah, giving people a good choice of iPhone sizes defiantly was destroying Apple business-wise.

I suspect it’s because the iPhone mini also makes Apple the least amount of money, margins wise. This is a consequence of Apple positioning larger screens as being more premium and costing more. The flip side is that smaller screens must also cost less.

Even if the plus iPhone sells the same quantity as the mini, it automatically wins by virtue of costing more (and consequently making Apple more money).

I still remember the day everyone thought 4" screens were too large. And how they thought the iPhone 6 Plus was TOO BIG at 5.5"
To be fair, we (and I) were not complaining about the SCREEN size. more the physical handset size. Different.

I used to test/eval handsets for work. I ran a 6 and 6+ for a month or so, much preferred the 6 due to its pocket-ability and gave the 6+ back; I could have had either for "free" (work paid).

I understand that the iPhone 12/13 mini didn't sell as well as other iPhones, but it did sell to some extent.

I'm disappointed that a giant company like Apple forgets that some products simply complete the ecosystem and their primary role is not to make a lot of money. I certainly don't think Apple was losing money on iPhone mini. Small phones have a market, but not as large. That doesn't mean it's not worth making them.

You can see that with the AirPods Max, for example. Whenever a product sells less, Apple forgets about it very quickly.

I can think of plenty of products that would take the Apple ecosystem to another level. For example, a PRO version of Mac peripherals. Mechanical keyboard, anatomically shaped mouse.

Wouldn't it be nice if they simplified the entire lineup to:

iPhone / iPhone Pro (three sizes of each)
iPad / iPad Pro (three sizes of each)
Macbook / Macbook Pro (two sizes of each)
iMac / iMac Pro (one size of each)
Watch / Watch Pro (two sizes of each)
Display / Display Pro (two sizes of each)

In short, choose the regular version or the Pro version and then choose your size. Updates to everything every year and no last year's models. Clear even for the non-technical customer.

I was seriously considering putting a new battery in my 13 mini until I dropped it on Monday (busted my wrist a couple of weeks ago, and fumbled it getting out of the car with the wrist support, dropped it onto bricks. its not too bad, a few chips and glass is intact, but...).

I wish they still made a 13 mini with new internals.

Now we can see that the foldables have a place in the market. There won’t be an iPhone Mini again as we used to know it, so most of the Mini buyers would be opting for the flip o fold iPhone.

Call me crazy if you want but time will tell.

It's an interesting gambit Apple are running

If I were forced one day to have a larger phone due to simply no other option, there would be very little keeping me necessarily on iPhones

I'd be just as likely to grab a Pixel and run GrapheneOS or an Android Flip of some kind, and before you know it they'll have lost me as a $10/mo iCloud customer also

iPhone needs more device diversity than this

What they are doing now would be like forcing all Macbook buyers to have a 15" or 16" MacBook

I found an old blackberry "smartphone" I have from 2012 and the screen size was about less than half of the SE phone.

The SE was not a “small phone”, which is why people who ask for small phones don’t buy it. When we say “small”, we mean “small”. Like iPhone 4s was the last phone I could use one handed. Give me an iPhone 4s sized phone, and people who want small phones will buy it.

same I do not want two handed phone and having to pull up the screen up to my face each time to unlock something.

Not surprised. With majority of people wanting large screen devices, it was only a matter of time. Expecting even bigger devices from Apple in the form of a foldable iPhone/iPad

I use a combination of iphone 13mini (for the portability and one hand usability - weight and size are great) and the ipad mini (for the bigger screen at home). Looks like I will use this combination for some time to come.

Still will have a few years with it ... but hope there will be a smaller version again.

(Maybe the iphone Air will do the trick ...) There is no Android alternative either.
While the currently rumoured iPhone Air looks to be a 6.6 inch device (bigger than the XS Max!) I wouldn't rule out a small iPhone in the future completely, Apple has expressed a desire to keep servicing this market, it may just mean periods where there is no 'current' option available. If the Air is a success, perhaps the mini could make a return like with the iPad mini, which also sits in the 'Air' tier feature wise? It looks like all models will be getting bigger again this year, the iPhone 17 growing to 6.3 inches, so that will leave quite a gap for a 5.4-5.8" iPhone. A 5.8" with the current design language would interest me and I'm not especially looking for a small iPhone, I just thought the X design was a nice size. With flat sides and narrower bezels it would be even more compact.

A damn shame.

Now some hip new company will swoop in and make a cool small phone and all the kids will switch to it and then everyone else will follow and Apple will be doomed in the phone market.

Yes maybe a flip phone would do it.

Guess... would Apple sell a specially designed iPhone bag in the near future? Because by then the iPhone will be so big, even foldable you can't put it in the pocket of your jeans or jacket anymore. Many already have their phone sticking out of their back pocket... easy targets for pickpocket's.

So sad that people that prefer Apple can't get just a small, light, basic iPhone. I do my computing at home. On my iPad and Mac mini. When I'm on the go I'm usually interested in everything else except being online. My mobile needs are the occasional phone call or text. A small, light, SE fits the bill. I have no desire to carry larger and heavier.
