I was recently issued with an iPhone SE at work. Now I find my iPhone X too big and heavy. I don’t think I can bring myself to replace it with something bigger.

With the discontinuation of the iPhone SE today, Apple no longer sells any "small screen" smartphones.

iphone-se-1.jpg

The smallest iPhone Apple now sells is 6.1-inches, with the iPhone 15, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 16 all coming in this display size. The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 16 Plus are available with 6.7-inch displays, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch display.

All of the discontinued iPhone display sizes with the device that introduced them are listed below:

  • 3.5-inches: iPhone (first-generation, 2007)
  • 4-inches: iPhone 5 (2012)
  • 4.7-inches: iPhone 6 (2014)
  • 5.5-inches: iPhone 6 Plus (2014)
  • 5.8-inches: iPhone X (2017)
  • 5.4-inches: iPhone 12 mini (2020)

With no iPhones left on sale with a display smaller than 6-inches and no rumors about any smaller devices in the pipeline, Apple seems to have abandoned the small-screen smartphone market entirely.

Any idea where the SE 2s are going to end up to be liquidated? The glass is shattered on mine the battery is only 73% The 16e is too big and too expensive to toss in my pocket.

The messed up part is that there aren't smaller, high-quality options on the android side either. We're just SOL.

It's as you say - making the best product for their customers is no longer a priority.

Larger screens are more immersive and makes it easier to keep the masses hooked.

That's the only reason no one's making small phones anymore.

It's all about this:

Phablet NPCs.jpg

Buy an Ipad then, if this is what you want. What's the point of having a huge smartphone if it doesn't even fit in your pocket?
It’s not just pockets. Not every (adult) has average or bigger hands. A “normal size” phone is just not comfortable to hold. And yea, it’s nice to have a bit of extra room in my pocket.

(Insert stock comment about my iPhone 13 mini being my last iPhone if there are no more small screen phones.)

The SE was not a “small phone”, which is why people who ask for small phones don’t buy it. When we say “small”, we mean “small”. Like iPhone 4s was the last phone I could use one handed. Give me an iPhone 4s sized phone, and people who want small phones will buy it.
When my Android tablet no longer offered a magazine subscription app (evidently bought out by Apple) I purchased an iPad. Almost at the same time my clamshell phone would not pair with a new vehicle so I became an Apple iPhone customer. My needs were simple, a “phone” that would pair and offer hands free in my new car and b small enough to fit in my pocket. The “smallest” at the time was the SE, it works, barely…. but gives me CarPlay and all its features. While the cost is important the size is more. I will keep my SE until it no longer qualifies for new operating systems (likely soon to force me into upgrading). My iPad has a screen big enough to see/use, I don’t need the same size on a phone. Ever bigger is not always what the customer wants

Four varieties of basically the same phone. Tech enthusiasts can't even make sense of it. They should make an iPhone 16e Plus or maybe a $579 iPhone 16c while they're at it just to make sure they have everyone in the market covered except for me.

No mini - no sale!
So are you just going to stick with the 12 mini forever then? Because from what I've seen, Apple's done with the small phone market, as are all other smartphone manufacturers.
So am I - a 12 mini owner too - done with buying Apple's phones.

If they don't make one in a form factor I like, I might just as well purchase an Android phone.
In fact, I just did. And it was considerably more affordable than any of Apple's offerings as well.

Many of them have moved on to the unrealistic begging/bargaining stage.

"Please Apple, if you could launch a new mini every 2 years or even 3 years, that would be great!"
Android that sells ~1 billion phones annually demonstrated the demand for small screened smartphones.

They gave up on that market as only far fewer than 13 million small screened smartphones from annual worldwide ~1.3 billion Android/iPhones shipped would be bought.

Apple needs to make the new foldable iPhone the closed size of the mini.
:p📱📱👏
Just as likely, the move to foldables is to get an even more humungous display into a devices that when folded is comparable to the footprint of current iPhones. More like a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or a Google Pixel Pro Fold instead of a Motorola Razr or a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

Just because if folds does NOT necessarily mean the folded phone will be small like a mini and fit easily into your pocket.

Agreed. Apple would still make a lot of money from an iPhone Mini, but not *as much* as they can make from larger phones.

Any other company would have been happy with iPhone 12/13 mini sales volumes.

If people bought them in meaningful quantities, then Apple would keep selling them. But people aren't buying them so here we are.
People were buying them in quantities that should have justified the continuation of the line up, but Apple greed stepped in.

The iPhone Plus models haven’t exactly lived up to sales expectations either.

Look at this mess of iPhones currently for sale on Apple.com
I mean, good lord --- how many versions of "the same thing" do they need to have for sale at once?

that "mess" generates yearly revenue of ~ $180B(million) - yep, sure is a mess.

I understand the desire for a smaller size iPhone (my wife loves her 13 mini), but, if those don't sell what do you expect Apple to do?

"Apple greed"

It was reported during both "mini" product lifecycles that they were selling in significantly lower volumes than the larger phones. As I said earlier, Apple is not going to manufacture phones that only serve a small corner of the overall smartphone market. It doesn't make any financial or logistical sense.

There's a market for smaller than 6.1-inch smartphones but it isn't worth Apple's or any Android brand's time, resources or effort.

It is like major airlines servicing small airports with little to no passenger traffic. They do it because they're legally obligated to or doing it out of charity.
