People won't go to office properly before 2022
This is a fair estimate. And this is also being suggested when we might see a sense of normalcy restored by mid-to-late 2022, being 2021 is still a ‘rebound year’ to continue social distancing, masking and of course when the vaccination is available. The vaccination for the majority won’t even available until the end of 2021 for healthcare workers are fulfilled first, followed by the geriatrics.

This year a lot of office work has been accomplished while not wearing trousers.

This whole vaccine business is completely out of control. They should have focused on building helmets or perfected masks. Masks that work > 80% for everyone, which is still a lot more efficient and safer than vaccines.
I completely agree. They stopped short on the mask thing and told everyone to just wear crappy cloth masks.

I have not been putting a lot of faith in the vaccine. It's going to have flaws, people are going to find them once it starts getting rolled out, and then no one is going to want it. "Better living through chemistry" has been bunk since the 1950's, and the pr surrounding all of this is more like "we think this should work" instead of "we have a cure!" If you know how to read through the pr/read through the lines, well, you know.

Also lol at everyone who thinks there's any kind of "going back." You don't shut down the world for > 1 year, and then "go back" to anything, especially today. That new york guy was right, internet bandwidth is allowing this to happen. Things have changed and been reshaped for good, and all of the companies should embrace it and stop keeping everyone on the fence. It's long past time, and everyone on this forum knows we've had all the software we needed to do this since iChat circa 2005.

For the consensus, my office is now slated for re-opening in mid-April, but it's surely going to get pushed back.

Those who can and want to work from home should be allowed to. I had hoped the dependency on the office would have been less necessary once this is all over.
My workplace in Australia went work from home in March.

We only just started back with one day per team here and there. The manager said the company is planning to go 70/30 with most people remaining at home and office space will be sub leased out to other companies.

June 2021 has been the targeted and expected office return date being discretely kicked around every HR and Facilities division of every Fortune 500 company since July. Where y'all been?

Cite you source please. It will happen when it happens. But there is no scenario of "late 2022' that is workable that will leave any quality of life left for most of us. There will be as many deaths from suicides and mayhem as there would be from Covid victims.

There’s a local infectious doctor in my area that is basically suggesting that we will see a ‘sense of normalcy’ by 2022, but the vaccination needs to take its place first, which is why I mentioned 2021 really will be a rebound year given how it’s transitioning different phases now that the vaccination is upon us. I could list that source, but I try to conceal my location, which that particular doctor lives in my city.

I’ll message you a link based off what he said.

Thanks.

we had some people that simple couldn't do it because of distractions, poor work ethic, etc. […] getting the 20% of employees to do actual work at home was a major challenge.
People who don’t like to work for whatever reason, will find a way even if they’re in. Going for a chat (of course business-related), having a smoke, water cooler - an office offers lots of opportunities to play hide-and-seek and avoid work for those who simply don’t want to work. Can’t micro-manage ‘em all.

We stopped allowing work from home back in Sep. Productivity took a nosedive. Most clients I work with pretty much agree.
I probably wouldn’t want to work in your company (or in your clients companies). I can vividly imagine the way people are “motivated” to work at 150% all day every day, burning out after some years, only to be replaced by freshmen who follow the carrot more willingly, until they’re burned out, too.

A welcome side-effect is reduction of commuting. Climate change does not wait for the world to finish fighting the virus. And it makes absolutely no sense to get 1ton+ of steel into motion, only to move around 80kg of flesh and blood every day, when there are better alternatives available.

At this point a lot of us have shifted to working from home and it’s working well. I can see this becoming the norm
I think if those can do everything from home then I can certainly see companies saying well you can stay at home doing it

I barely remember how to drive at this point. No way I’m going back and fortunately we aren’t. And only showering a few times per week has done wonders for my complexion. I wake up at the crack of 8:30 every day, roll over and grab my MacBook Pro and start my day. We don’t even use email any more, just Slack and assign tasks in Basecamp. Everybody knows what they need to do in a given day. No more wasting time, just “You, do this.” We work four days and have three day weekends now. I wear a t-shirt and basketball shorts every day. Remote working is one of the few bright spots to come out of this year. Not to mention pooping in private. I also don’t get sick anymore! Nor do I have to listen to coworkers stopping by my door to waste my time talking about nothing that I care about. It’s great!

Well than you have bad and antiquated leadership in your company. Getting good results with work at home starts with new management techniques and tracking mechanics. Our company was quickly to adapt and we are getting more projects done.

I think one of the big successes this year was the new style of product launch events, which I found more entertaining to watch. I'd prefer if they went this way in the future as the standard launch process, and worked with trusted 3rd parties who don't leak to have a timed first look video to replace the videos that would take place in the lobby after a live stage event.

Nope it’s simply not a work at home kind of job. You’d think it could be. Cpa firm. And it can be for some stretches but nope too many resources in office. Still have to meet with some clients.

Besides keeping work at work is a good thing. Ideally you don’t want this at home. I’m quick to fire employees who give problems over this where I was lenient in past. Clients are doing same with my urging. These are the ones who can’t come in and can’t produce at home.

I don't see vaccines making it to everyone else by June. My team can work from home as long as they want. I would estimate September as being the earliest that offices will be fully reopened. Most IT staff will be remote for the majority of the time. Apple spent a ton of money on that HQ and another one in Austin. My team doesn't need to justify using brick and mortar.

This is pretty much in line with a lot of other companies. Most of my friends offices have said next summer. Whether this leads to offices shrinking in favor of working from home remains to be seen. I wouldn't be surprised if over the next couple of years they slowly start requiring people be in the office again.

Our HR Dept was thinking of having everyone back in the office by June (that being the end of a phased 'return to the office' plan).....but in our most recent meeting, they said now that's not expected to be until July or August.

A part of me believes as these goal posts keep being projected further and further into the future that they’re never going to arrive and things are not ever going back to how they were. Things will flare up again or something else will happen before that time to extend it furthermore down the track. The world is changed and it seems eerily like it will never be the same again...

Sorry for the doompost, just feels like strange times

As soon as June? I'm surprised, unless they've secured their own supplies of vaccine.

There has been no progress in readying states for distribution, even if sufficient quantities of vaccine were available. At the current pace, it will be 2022 before enough people have been vaccinated in the US to allow a slow return to normal.

Ah yes, productivity over safety. Our species sure has our priorities right.

It’s a small firm. I own part of it. Personally I’d never work at a large one. We kind of do what we want. If you want to smoke in your office pop a window open.

Use common sense. We don’t exactly eat next to each other. Wear masks if together.

The real problems are schools. Kids can’t be home alone. Going two days a week is still a joke. In my neighborhood we’ve got about 5 kids on the cul de sac. One neighbor and her kid took over and we all pay her.

Say what you want about productivity over safety but letting your business die isn’t acceptable either. Besides this covid is way overblown. You should be more fearful of these unproven vaccines then actually catching covid. The data on these vaccines is a joke.
