Most of you will still buy Apple when Apple is being Apple.

Why?
Because this is all pointless hyperbole about the changing of a charging port, of all things? Or was that a trick question?

Already 6 pages! One can only imagine how many pages there would be if Apple changed the two prong plug to three! “Apple made me re-wire my knob and tube Victorian mansion!” :D This thread is giving an Onion parody vibe!

AirPods have gone really down hill in my opinion, overpriced and full of gimmicks.

In my personal experience you can get a better wireless headphone experience using third party BT headphones. I have a pair of JLab POP buds that pair instantly, sound great and have no more latency than AirPods.

Or just use wired headphones; Particularly now the iPhone supports USB-C you can use any wired headphones with an 3.5mm adapter or a pair of USB-C headphones, to get lossless audio, without all the compression/latency/spacial/dolby nonsense.

I don't need a "find my" feature for my £25 wired or wireless headphones, because if I lost them I would just get another pair. If someone is talking to me I just simply remove one of the buds from my ear to hear.

It's possible to have too much technology that it starts to become less enjoyable. I couldn't wait to flog my AirPods 3.
I agree. I just switched back to my Nokia flip phone.

If there was some new hardware component in USB-C APP2 then you might have a point.

Apple could literally put out a new iPhone 15 Pro in 6 months where they software enable Thunderbolt transfer speeds but you don’t get it if you bought a 15 Pro at launch even though the hardware is the same and you’d say people are just whiny.

What Apple doing here is the definition of planned obsolescence and one of the main reasons the World is looking like it does today.
You seem to think this rumour site is a fact site. Considering that at least one other person has posted a conversation with Apple Support which conflicts with this rumour, blaming Apple for not enabling a currently non-existent feature seems rather premature.

They also had a rumour about a price increase on the iPhone 15 Pro which caused lots of complaints about “how Apple that was!” Apparently it wasn’t that Apple.

I wonder why these aren’t just considered a new generation since they have a new case, improved waterproofing, and lossless audio?

That is a good question. My guess would be because this is just a rumour and it really does just have a new case, and the other two items will turn out to be just a change in measurement (or just the IP54 rating of the case itself) and a specific feature of the Vision Pro that also works with the Lightning version.

I guess they could have done some minor change to improve the actual AirPod IP54 rating, if there was no tooling change, but I would agree with you that this would be the kind of thing to warrant at least a V2.1 generation, since it would be a change to the actual AirPods.

Rumours can be fun, but they seem to quickly get ugly when people treat them like facts.

What a ****** move. Care about preventing waste and the environment at all my a$ s!!!!
When I see stuff like this I disgust myself for actually having liked and still like their products.
I don’t think you need to be disgusted, at least not for liking Apple products in particular (consumerism in general is something many of us need to be more thoughtful about). Everyone has an effect on the environment, but Apple is likely no worse but probably even better than comparable companies. I don’t get too much caught up in their environmental marketing—it’s expected and irrelevant.

I don't know; maybe they are justified in their comments. The individuals taking those potshots aren't necessarily trying to convince others they are concerned about the environment; Apple is. It seems reasonable in my mind for them to be able to call Apple to task, but I could be wrong.
Honestly, the most environmentally positive thing Apple could do is to introduce a single model of iPhone that was as hard to break as possible, and to never upgrade it. That isn’t a great business model, but it is good for the environment, and I am sure everyone here would be happy with Apple at that point. /s

And? Has nothing to do with offering the case standalone which I believe they will do in time.
But only the USB-C AirPods Pro are dust resistant. And have the specialized audio for the upcoming Vision Pro. Hence the confusion, if the only differentiator is the charging case between the two (still both considered “second gen”)

So theoretically I could buy the USB-C AirPods Pro, say I've lost them, pay € 119 for a replacement case and send the USB-C AirPods back while using the replacement case with my old ones? 🤔

You're perfectly describing how I feel about that as well. It's an audacity, if you think about their mother nature clip in the September event.

There are (allegedly) millions of Air pod pro users out there. Did people honestly think that Apple was going to allow these millions of pro users to purchase a standalone USB C charging case (would be less than $100 probably) for their already existing air pods when Apple knows they can restrict by saying users can only gets a USB C charging case with a new pair of air pod pro's ($249). Apple is all about money, do not think otherwise.
Apple considers AirPods of all kinds to be iPhone accessories, so of course they’ll standardize the ports. The rest of the AirPods line will also be updated to USB-C. Remember when the iPhone 12 introduced MagSafe? Apple released a separate case for the AirPods Pro that had MagSafe for $75, if memory serves.

I don’t know why they’re not releasing a separate case for the AirPods Pro this time around but they certainly did once when Apple added a charging method. While I think the AirPods Pro 2nd gen with Lightning case are the same as the ones in the USB-C case, many journalists are reporting they are not the same to quite a bit of confusion. If that’s true, it makes a lot of sense to not release a separate case since the first gen2’s may not work with the second gen2’s case. Perhaps they feel most people with existing AirPods will simply use MagSafe charging. Your rant was that why would you expect Apple to do so when they actually did what you say they wouldn’t do three years ago when they released a separate case for the original AirPods Pro? Would you be this angry if Apple simply called their new AirPods the AirPods Pro third generation?

I certainly wished they had released a new case, but they didn’t for reasons we don’t know yet since there’s so much disagreement over whether the Lightning version and the USB-C versions are the same or not.

Apple is all "pro-environment" and "pro-diversity" as long as it keeps raking in the dollars.
@randfee2 , @borntrouble

Would it have been better for the environment if they sold the battery case separately and millions of people tossed their current case to upgrade to the latest and greatest? You could see this as a way to make that less likely and that would be better for the environment. These things can be tricky.

not sure where the cut for “pro-diversity” came from, but… whatever.

Isn’t that a lot of work for little return (not to mention more than a bit questionable)? Wouldn’t it make more sense to just ask your Apple Store about ordering a new replacement case? No one has confirmed that the case doesn’t work with the existing AirPods, but no one has confirmed that Apple will not sell it to you, either. I would expect that within a few weeks they will be able to tell you if you can just order it as a replacement part. Just because they aren’t creating a retail SKU, that doesn’t mean it won’t be available as a replacement (as you already expect for the new model), and I would think they would prefer to move to stocking only the new case as a replacement, if it works with both, which I expect it will (well, they probably will prefer to clear out the old model cases first, but if you specifically request the new one, I would think they would at least give you an answer.)
