Apple Not Planning to Launch a Smaller iPhone

years ago the fan boys swore apple would never release an ipod on Windows since it had some kind of magical synergy with a Mac
then they swore that apple would never release cheaper ipods because apple only wanted the premium market. then came the piece of crappola that is the shuffle
now everyone is swearing that apple will never release a cheap iphone.of course they will and it probably won't need a data plan. i have family that have been asking me about iphones, ipads and ipods and with the iphone as soon as i mention a $25 data plan they lose interest. i bet in 6 months there will be a cheap data plan not required iphone or something similar to compete with the $25 all you can surf/text/email android phones
after almost 2 years with the 3GS i'm thinking about going to Android. the games on iOS mostly suck and i never played that much. and a phone from 2 years ago is plenty powerful for streaming netflix, youtube, email, facebook, reading the news, books, etc. i can get some decent android phones for dirt cheap now and don't really feel like paying $400 for an iphone again. $299 plus tax plus activation, etc

Please private message me to sell me your 3GS. I've been using an iPhone 3G I was given (for free) and wouldn't mind keeping your 3GS out of a landfill. I'm addicted to a little App that doesn't exist on the Android platform (Hipstamatic) and could use a more powerful processor.
My wife will enjoy the 3G I'll be giving her.

Agreed! Most of the "rumors" have been sooo weak lately and all they seem to do is feed the trolls. But I this is part of the rumor mill and you have to take it with a grain of salt.

I don't think you're getting where I'm doubting the edge to edge screen idea.
Right now, even with a decent sized bezel, I've found cases that make hitting the space bar difficult when in landscape mode. When cases wrap around such that they cover the bezel up to the screen edge, they make it hard to wedge ones digit right up to the screen border.
Without any bezel at all you have two problems. Firstly, *all* cases that raise above the screen will make screen edges hard to access for fingers and thumbs. Secondly, Apple will need to be careful to create a side that specifically allows cases to anchor on, without being to wrap-around grip. I'm not even sure the aerial bar around the 4 would be enough by itself to provide decent grip for cases other than silicone bumpers.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Apple don't take a crack at making the whole device a screen, since it seems in line with their design aesthetic, and allows apps to run with a higher level of perceived prominence than they currently do. I'm just not at all convinced that such a device would wear well with day to day use.

Without going into details... back in about 1994 my team (we were with a large software company) was at a Seybold conference (for those of you who remember this show) and rumors would run ramped. So, we wanted to see how easy it was to start a rumor, so we came up with an outlandish one and would drop it from time to time with people we knew. Within a day I had people coming up to me and telling me the same rumor. It was amazing how fast it spread and how many people thought it was fact.
Funny thing is... our outlandish rumor came true two years later. 😱
I don't care any more after this latest gaffe with Subscription Tax. My next choice will clearly be Android and not something from Apple portfolio.

Some people are never going to be happy are they? iPhone4 = fantastic design, 'retina display', face-time, imovie, ibooks, huge app store ...
The real fact is that because Apple consistently set the bar so high that people start acting like spoiled likkle babies begging for more of mummy's milk.
i was actually looking forward to a smaller phone, always liked small phones..... wont scream or wail though because a) it still might happen, and b) i'm an adult
Resolution independence
Was Apple not working on resolution independence in the not too distant past? Perhaps they finally have functional code and will implement this in iOS5. This would permit multiple size variations going forward.
Interestingly though on another issue, we all want the latest and greatest and complain when Apple have not lived up to our rumoured specs, yet here we are asking for lower specs!

how much for a water damaged 3GS? still works but the vibrator is making funny noises when i plug it in.
and i'm still planning to use it for skype video and as an ipod

I wouldn't mind if the phone where smaller by removal of the Home button. But, as a smart phone, the screen size is about perfect. Certainly small enough.
I really like your work, and if the next iPhone looks like this, that would be sweet. If you are taking requests, here are mine.
Have two iPhones displayed horizontally with a movie scene visible.
- Phone #1 is the same physical size as the current iPhone with the screen enlarged so it touches the sides.
- Phone #2 also has its screen touch the sides, but the size of the screen is the same, so the phone is the same height, but is a skinnier.

I think home button is needed but it looks awesome without it because it is smaller. I wish you could do a smaller one with the home button. AWESOME job btw.

i think, if they were to have a Small Iphone 5, they should make it have the 3.5 screen, and make a larger one with 4 inches, but if they move the screen to the outer edges, alot of cases would cover up some of the screen, unless they were the bumpers style

figured that much. Yes, a free iPhone would be nice to most people.. but it wouldn't be a true iPhone. Now, a cheaper iPhone in general.. is most likely.
