I rather have an itch to reply that Apple wants you to buy / rent movies on their iTunes Store.

They're not going to retain the internal opticals just because of rebellious types like you, who want circumvent their great iTunes Store by buying plain old DVDs!

:D

Then they need to extract their heads from their buttholes. The UK iTunes store is constructed of pure fail if you want any media besides music. The dirty little secret of those wide sweeping claims SJ makes every time he announces some improvement to the range of stuff on the iTunes store is that if you're outside of the US (and possibly Canada) you're either going to get screwed on price or screwed on availability of stuff. Or if you're lucky, both. Either way you end up screwed.

I realise you're probably only having a lighthearted joke here, but you've touched a nerve... Apple can cram the itunes store where the sun don't shine then follow it up with some walnuts as far as I'm concerned.

It's because 99.9995% of all film material that has been released is not available as an iTunes downloadable version.

That gets to me.

Plus, I just wanted to say Gawd-f**** it, I am not gonna use my damn little iPod or iPhone to watch DVD movies on. Clips maybe yes, but only stuff I download off YouTube and convert.

If I want to watch a "movie" and I am on the road I'm going to use my MacBook Pro. If I am at home I will watch it on my Mac Pro with my 23" or on just a regular TV set with a DVD player. I am not a big fan of paying money for a Protected format AAC movie. bah. I would rather have it on a MPEG-2 DVD media format or a Blu-Ray disc.

Their format is prohibitive in that it only lets you "watch" or use the movies on an Apple device or an "authorized" computer via the QuickTime software.

Their Music Store I will give a better grade too, now that they offer albums in 256k AAC and their prices are actually decent, and it's DRM free and non-protected format now which is a Plus (iTunes Plus, that is ;-) - I regularly buy tunes off the iTunes store. But never movies. If I don't get the music from iTunes I get it from Beatport (I buy alot of dance singles, which are not always available on iTunes).

It's tempting to ignore you completely because of your sophomoric language, but for the rest of the people out there who think Apple has some magic wand for copyright laws: let me inform you that they don't. The deals they strike in one country apply to the copyrights of that country. Not all copyrights are international.

Let's remember how the current laptop line is organized

Some posters are suggesting the MB refreshes will replace the MBP, or vice versa. As I see it, the current line is arranged like this:
-MBPs are for creatives and power-consumers who need the big guns and the big screens. They are a trendsetting influential demographic for Apple.
-MBs are for mortals in business, student, and home use where a more managable size is suitable.
-The MBA is thinnest, lightest, and underfeatured for a couple reasons. It's the flagship container for the new batteries, drives, etc. that are REALLY thin and will likely appear in all their computers including desktops. And let's not forget what (I think) is the original meaning of "Air", the use of external hard drives, etc. wirelessly, to shed thickness and weight.
So that's why I think the laptop product line is segmented and stable for now. But if the MBs and MBPs reach MBA dimensions, and if consumers don't take to the wireless/external component direction, it could bring the MBA's reason to live into question.
Opinions?

It's tempting to ignore you completely because of your high and mighty attitude, but for the rest of the people out there who might be interested in the discussion: I'm sure we're all well aware that things aren't always easy, but you would not know this if all you ever did was listen to the claims for the store made by SJ. My frustration with Apple stems from the glowing language used to describe these new deals on stage compared to reality for everyone of us outside of the US. I strongly doubt I'm the only person who feels this way.

The point being answered, however, was the suitability of movie downloads from itunes as a substitute for being able to play DVDs. Regardless of why or who gets the blame, it wouldn't be a good idea because of the limits of the store.

People already have large DVD libraries. At least I do and I watch those in my bed on my laptop. If Apple would exclude the drive I wouldn't buy one. If I cannot use the laptop for one of the intended purposes it doesn't make sense to buy - doesn't matter how much I dislike Windows.

Consumers will take to the wireless direction and the MacBook Air (or something similar) will replace the MacBook at some point. At a lower price point, of course. I suppose that Apple had something like this in mind when introducing the MacBook Air. We'll see if it turns out this way...

Apple surely has some marketing research telling them that DVD burners in notebooks are just rarely used "on the go". Of course, some people might object saying "I do use the optical drive everyday" and some might find an integrated solution convenient even for occasional use. Still, most people I know hardly use the optical drive away from home.

I think you're probably right, although increasingly, people are opting for laptops for use mostly at home, simply because laptops save space. I know a number of people who purchased a laptop that will rarely if ever leave their home; they just wanted something they could easily move from room to room of their home and tuck away somewhere when they're not using it. These types of laptop owners most certainly do not want a bunch of peripherals to deal with, but they're also (probably) not a big target market for computer companies.

My mother uses her laptop like that. I agree there might not be many such users now, but there's more and more of them. Also, I know quite a few people who don't care whether their laptop weighs 2 or 3kg, or even more, they want to have a full-featured, but still portable computer (although I know a guy who brought his desktop with him for half a day, just to play games ). I think bigger laptops (like MBPs now) will still exist and have optical drives or anything that's popular at the moment, simply because there's a market for it. Smaller ones will likely follow Air in giving up on some built-in stuff.

I hardly use my windshield wipers during the summer, but they're pretty important sometimes. :)

In fact I rarely, or never, use most of the connections on my laptop - optical drive, external monitor port, firewire, 2nd USB port, headphones or microphone connection. But I still want all of them.

Ahhh, the wait is tough. Especially now, since my friend bought herself a new MBP and let me play on it yesterday

Just a question: if Apple is planning a MacBook Event on September 23 as Engadget suggested, then when invitation tickets are supposed to come out?

Its too late, invites always go out exactly a week before, a website update is possible but i think October 14th seems more likely, I think the new ipods need a few more weeks of exposure.

MacBooks were first introduced without an event. One day Apple decided they "magically" appear and replace the iBook G4s.

Aha. That's what I thought. So it is still possible that one Tuesday they just appear on there. Here's hoping it's this Tuesday. Somehow in the back of my mind (ONLY a hunch). That if its not this Tuesday it will be October 14th :(

Oh no, now I'm forever going to obsess about random Tuesdays!!

(Please let it be this Tuesday!!) :)

I've been doing it for the last 5 weeks LOL. Over here, it's Wednesday morning. Haven't been getting much sleep Tuesday night for awhile!
