Very interesting that at pcworld.co.uk, only one of the 4 macbooks are available online, one is not available, and two are only available collect instore, which to me suggests that stock has been shipped out to the stores and depleted completely at the distribution centre.
New macs may be rolled out before the 14th Oct?

I hope so, but iPhone was out of stock for more than a month before 3G was announced.

Unfortunately, Apple is very likely to keep the integrated graphics solution for the MB/MBA, just so it can distance the MB/MBA from the MBP.

Another unfortunate instance: Apple will still probably keep the Combo Drives... just so people who want to use iDVD HAVE to buy the mid-range MB. Apple will probably keep these Combo drives until:

a.) Optical drives lose their relevance. I see Apple's point with the MBA and their push for downloadable content with the Apple TV and iTMS/App Store.

b.) Blu-ray becomes a popular mode for optical data storage. BD drives get cheap enough so they become the new SuperDrives and DVD SuperDrives are relegated to being the new ComboDrive.

*when BD comes... what will they call iDVD? :p

I want Apple to stay with the MB chiclet keys... though the MBP keys are great, I think the chiclet keys are awesome and innovative. A couple of tweaks and I think the MBP people will be fine with it.

And LED displays for the MB!

*is the dithering/"lack of the millions of colors" problem still a problem with the current generation MacBooks?

Oh... and about the thread topic: PLEASE APPLE, upgrade the MBA Drives! The drive sizes are the biggest hindrance to the MBA being so much better.

iDisc sounds simpler..

Either way, I'd love for them to get rid of that redundant combo drive in both the Mac mini and the MacBook, but I can't see them doing it - although that said, they did make the iPod classic one standard size, stranger things have happened!

I guess it's good about the Air, I just don't feel the desire for one, or even why someone would want one since they're less powerful than a much cheaper MacBook and have no internal optical drive; unless it's simply to look, erm, cool.

Thank you! I was staring at this comment thinking "he's probably 11, leave it alone" but seriously!! Now macbooks have been dubbed "gay" and we all know that "gay" is a terribly misused word as it is... but... I don't see how a poor defenseless macbook could be at all homosexual...looking or otherwise?

One definition of "gay" is "happy." :D

Ok as far as all those saying "I hope it will be sooner than Oct. 14", if you don't see any rumors the day before usually it's not going to happen. I've been on this site for a while and seen the process on here through apple refreshes. Almost always the week before the updates, you get a lot of different sources confirming or reporting that refreshes are coming in the next week or couple days.
Plus, rumors on the night before mean an update is practically certain. Those rumors may also give detailed specs that haven't been revealed previously.

Another unfortunate instance: Apple will still probably keep the Combo Drives... just so people who want to use iDVD HAVE to buy the mid-range MB. Apple will probably keep these Combo drives until:
And even if Apple does ditch the Combo Drive, I'm sure Apple will find another way to cripple the low-end model.

Given the 120 GB HD in the iPod classic, we can see a 120 GB MacBook Air.

resupplied

the local best buy was entirely out of macs last week now they have macbooks and imacs but no airs/ mbp.

And they should. A lot of people don't care about dedicated graphics and don't want to pay a premium for it.

a.) Optical drives lose their relevance. I see Apple's point with the MBA and their push for downloadable content with the Apple TV and iTMS/App Store.

But not on an entry-level MB. People still need some way to install software and play DVDs.

The MBA's size is the biggest hindrance to it being better. Given Apple's obsession with "thinner," it all depends on what they can squeeze into it. I think the 120MB drive now in the iPod Classic is the same form factor as the MBA's current drive. I expect that will be the new size, and no larger.

New MacBooks to arrive in Early October!
"Field checks confirm that shipments of new MacBooks have begun, with a sharp production ramp planned for Sept and an introduction planned for early October. The most distinctive features of the new MacBook appear to be a very thin aluminum casing, an LED-backlit display and an aggressive entry-level price point."

Agreed, but whether it is the Intel X4500 or the nVidia MCP79, performance will be significantly better then the current X3100.

I really hope not. It's downright embarrassing at this point, considering how cheap they are.

And LED displays for the MB!

Likely a given.

*is the dithering/"lack of the millions of colors" problem still a problem with the current generation MacBooks?

Probably, in that most laptop displays are 6-bit units.

Oh... and about the thread topic: PLEASE APPLE, upgrade the MBA Drives! The drive sizes are the biggest hindrance to the MBA being so much better.

Well Apple has options now they didn't have at the MBA's launch, so hopefully we will see more BTO and standard options.

!!!

This makes me happy.

I fully agree to that. How low does one have to become to describe labtops as "gay". It's a pitty sometimes when people drag down the (at least in my oppinion) high standards of Macrumors, by using foul, insulting or inappropriate language.

Ideas:

iRay, iBlu, iBurn... or Apple can create another naming fad since the iNames are pretty used to death already.

lol, so true, these days you have to wonder if any word starting with i is a product from apple. anyways, they could get a change and call it aRay or oRay. :D
Anyways, I honestly thinhk that bluRay is not pushing through well enough, I see it as a dying technology, allthough I was quite enthusiastic about it at first. Well, just an oppinion, I dont want to start a discussion on bluRay in this thread.

please don't use or take "homosexual" as an insult.

ok, some goofball calls a macbook homo, but then a well-meaning responder defends the computer from being called homo. both treat homosexuality as an insult -- intentionally or unintentionally.

now, back to the powerbook orgy in progress.

This seems really easy to figure out.

Probably they could make the case thinner with 120 GB drive (Are 160 GB drives available in the same form factor?). Offering only one joint form factor is a no-brainer for economic reasons: Economies of scale in times of decreasing sales of the "classic" iPod. Apple's focus is quite obviously on the iPhone and the touches - and so is the consumers'. The iPhone platform is what the app store apps are sold for, where the fancy new multitouch is built in, that's what gets the hype and media attention, etc... And then... who does really need more than 120 GB at the moment?

I'm virtually sure that we have seen the last and ultimate "classic" iPod revision. It's already sold at a "discount" price of $249. Next year, the touch and the classic are going to be merged into one single product line, featuring 3.5" multi-touch displays and 128 GB of solid-state memory.

Whether this is true or not, I like this info.
:)

There is a site called eBay, it's about 10 years old, and you will find a number of MacBooks and MacBook Pros for sale, some of them new.

Again, the site is called eBay, I think the web address is www.ebay.com

possibly some of you may vaguely have heard of this site. I believe it's an auction site, but many of the items are sealed in box and new.

eBay is the name of it, I believe. If you need help try to google it, I think it's still around.

Good luck.

Oh, by the way, you will usually be able to grab one for a few $100 less on that site anyways.

If it came with it!

which it wouldn't.

Exactly. And it would be a very awkward sales conversation:
New buyer: Wow, I've been wanting to buy an Apple, and this is a great price!
Salesperson: Yeah, and if you want to install software on it you can buy this extra box too.
Buyer: Wha???

Anyway, it goes against all of Steve Jobs' prejudices for an all-in-one experience. (I wonder how many separate optical readers Apple has sold for the MBA?)

Sure... but it goes well with Steve's prejudices against obsolete technology. Mind you, this the same guy who essentially killed floppy drives and ADB buses (in Macs)...

How long is Software going to come on optical media anyway?

Sure... there's Blu-ray, there are some "big" apps which requiring many GBs (games, iLife) and there's Windows which come on traditional media. Other than that... pretty much can be sold in downloadable form. They don't even have to include Mac OS X installation DVDs...

I agree. The fact that you can purchase a downloadable version of Creative Suite 3 "Master Collection" which weighs in at 14GB indicates to me that optical media serves little purpose. If Apple will ship OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" on flash media that plugs into USB (a perfectly viable option for an OS install that does require some form of physical media), then it's perfectly reasonable to drop the optical drive. I don't know if it's time to do that on an entry-level machine, but they used the iMac to change to face of physical media forever, so why not the MacBook to change it again?
