In 2011, when iCloud replaced MobileMe, Apple gave paying MobileMe customers an additional 20GB of iCloud storage as a thank you for their purchase. That storage was to be discontinued in September of 2012, but Apple ended up giving MobileMe users another year of storage for free.

Now, however, the complimentary iCloud storage plan will be expiring at the end of next month, on September 30th.

For customers using more than 5GB of storage, they will be required to purchase an additional 10GB of storage for $20/year, 20GB for $40/year, or 50GB for $100/year, or a number of iCloud features -- iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail -- will stop working on the 30th until the issue is resolved.

And so it begins. I never really used the extra space so I won't miss it when it goes.

Just sign up for SkyDrive for better email, better storage, cheaper upgrades, and better service.

You should get 5gb for EACH iOS device you have purchased and are using. When you have multiple devices using the same iCloud account it can fill pretty quickly.

What a slap in the face! Yahoo gives away 1TB of free photo storage on Flickr, and Apple has to take away 15GB of the 20GB they gave to customers?

Microsoft gives me 14gb of storage, for FREE. I have never paid a penny for it. And Apple can't be bothered to give their loyal and paying customers 15gb extra?

Looks like I'll have to turn off iCloud Backup. :(

When it expires, your iCloud storage will be automatically adjusted to the free 5 GB plan. Note that you are currently using 11.71 GB of storage. If you exceed your storage plan on September 30, 2013, iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail will temporarily stop working.
To continue using these iCloud features without interruption, reduce the amount of iCloud storage you are using or purchase a storage plan by September 30, 2013.

the absurdity of paying to centralize all your data in "the cloud" to make it easier for the NSA to learn everything about you just defies logic. good riddance already.

Silly of Apple to cause a commotion over 15 GB in this day and age. :p

They should just have made a special hidden tier of iCloud storage for grandfathered accounts which had 20 GB for free.

They've proven that they had the ability to accomodate for 100% of all MobileMe users having 20 GB, so capacity is obviously not an issue for them. iCloud storage upgrades are also hardly a major source of income for Apple to fight over either.

They should give everyone extra 5 GB for free (10 GB in total). Competing cloud storage services offer much more for free.

I wonder how much value articles like this add to the MR community as a whole...

Either this affects you and Apple already has/will email you... Or this doesn't affect you and thus probably don't care a whole lot.

But now you all have a centralized place to complain about Apple being cheap about 15 GB of space. :)

If it would automatically backup my iPad, along with my Windows Devices this would be great.

Still good to be reminded about how little Apple really care about the loyal base.

My feeling is Apple is going backwards instead of forward

Unfortunately, it's been this was for sometime as it pertains to ignoring the long time supporters

Indeed 5GB is nothing these days

Nope and it would be nice if they did at the very least provide more space to people who own multiple Apple products. ven HTC gives you extra Dropbox storage when you buy a HTC phone. (it's only good for 2 years but you get more when you add the next phone)

Ouch, that's cold. Not even a "Sincerely."

Nice!

icloud said i was using 22GB of my 25GB allowance... I had no idea what the heck would be included in that 22GB, so i checked... I had an old iphone 4S backup that was 20GB... DELETE (what would be backed up that would take up that much space???)

Same here. However, back when that upgrade happened, I never actually received the additional storage space and it always stayed at 5GB.

I didn't really mind since I never used the storage space anyway!

They never "gave" away that much. I paid $100 a year for that space, they only "gave" it to those people who paid for Mobile Me for the past two years. I agree that they need to increase the amount of space, 5 GB is a joke, but they are only "taking away" something they didn't have to give us in the first place.

With that said, I almost feel that Apple might have a plan to up the limit in the near future.

Eh, doesn't affect me since I never had MobileMe. I do think they should double storage across the board, though, at the same price points. 10GB free would enable me to stop micromanaging my iPad at backup time.

Fine with me. With an iPad and 2 iPhones fully backed up, happy to pay for this service. To that person who said Flickr is giving you 1TB for
Photos: you get unlimited photo storage with iCloud
