i'm going to guess that they'll fold and continue to give the 20GB to everyone that has it now before the end of the month.. Please keep up the bitching! ;)

Back to manual backups then!

I have my iPad, iPad mini and iPhone 5 backing up to iCloud and it is great to not have to remember to back the devices up.

When I go back down to 5Gb I guess I'll be back to syncing with iTunes.

Shame really because, as many of you have said, other cloud services offer much more free space!

...

They've proven that they had the ability to accomodate for 100% of all MobileMe users having 20 GB, so capacity is obviously not an issue for them. iCloud storage upgrades are also hardly a major source of income for Apple to fight over either.

Freeing up all that extra space will mean their server farms can scale down a bit for the current term (of probably ten years or so).

I backup to a local Time Capsule and to other portable drives. I just have lots of email  I haven't worked through yet.

They need to just increase the free storage size. Some of us have 4 devices sharing one account (iPhone, 2 iPads, and a Mac) now and this may only increase as new products come out that use iCloud.

Why can't they just do 5GB base free plus 2 GB for each extra device added to the account?

"I see what you did there"

I knew this was coming as soon as they offered the extended year to existing .mac/.me users. Lets have our loyal users, who probably have more than 1 iOS device, rack up on storage, so we can stick it to them later.

Personally, I like to keep things old school and back up to my computer. Problem solved.

I also received this letter today. I had assumed all along that I'd end up paying if I kept the 20GB so I never really used many of the services available to me.

Once iDisk went away, which I used extensively, my interest in iCloud evaporated.

After the "Mobile.me" mess it will be a long time before I pay Apple for storage...

Same here, even resisting iCloud for now. I'd rather give Dropbox my business.

While I don't like people whining, I do agree that giving 15 GB to grandfathered accounts should have been automatic.

And that's to compensate for the pain from iDisk to .mac. to mobile.me. etc. etc.

You should get 5gb for EACH iOS device you have purchased and are using. When you have multiple devices using the same iCloud account it can fill pretty quickly.

This! Nowadays, 5GB total free storage is ridiculously small for use with multiple devices. As someone who owns 3 iOS devices (iPad and 2 iPod Touches) and a MBP, I have less than 700MB left on my acct. and I overwhelmingly use it for device backups. IMO, 10GB should be an absolute minimum, or 5GB for each registered device - Macs included.

Or just do the "Downgrade" option for 10GB/$20 per year; enough to back up your phone (generally speaking) and cheap enough you won't really miss it. After all, at the moment $20/iCloud + $25/iTunes Match is far cheaper than the $99/year we used to pay as MobileMe users!

icloud said i was using 22GB of my 25GB allowance... I had no idea what the heck would be included in that 22GB, so i checked... I had an old iphone 4S backup that was 20GB... DELETE (what would be backed up that would take up that much space???)

Pretty much the same story here except it was 16 GB backup of an iPod touch. Gone and I'm back way under 5 GB.

You guys don't see the big picture here tho, most other service providers like Skydrive, Google Drive etc give you ample of space...however they aren't exactly useful as they are not implemented like how iCloud is....they are great with their huge buckets of storage but what good is it if you have to do everything manually vs iCloud?

I have the 5GB Free storage much like all of you so what do I do to cheap out?

- Use iCloud to back up all docs & data but no Camera Roll (the biggest storage user) Currently using 3.5GB/5GB
- Use Dropbox Automatic Camera-Roll-Back-up [yes its not exactly automatic when you have to open the app for it work but that doesn't take much effort now does it? no to mention its the best option vs Skydrive or Google Drive etc (have 87GB accumulated because thanks to Samsung and HTC promotions from previous phones giving me 48GB+23GB+Referrals and wen they expire maybe ill pay for it) - Been able to backup Images+Videos for the past almost 2 years (4000+ and counting)

Yes I do agree Apple should raise the bar here from 5GB to 10GB Free standard storage and perhaps provide cheaper extended storage options vs current price plan of $20/10GB, $40/20GB, and $100/50GB (Paying $2/GB...Hope they are using SSD's on these servers rather than conventional HDD's lol....) as these options are a bit over priced...because even the SSD prices have dropped to <$1/GB.

hahahahahahahahahaha

Oh god this is funny.

These guys have no idea what trajectory they're on.

Their bean counter CEO has decided to "create shareholder value" by trying to milk a (15-year!) loyal customer for $40 a year for a free service that costs them almost nothing to provide and gives me very little value.

The only value I get from this hokey online storage is that it's free. Full stop.

Do they not realize that they will simply drive all of my traffic and all of my interest to any of the competing services that provide infinitely more functionality for the same price or free?

The only reason that I'm using their unreliable fisher price service is that costs nothing and requires no research or configuration.

If I'm going to be forced to pay more than $0.00 per year for online storage, I'll comparison shop and there's not a chance in hell that I'll choose to give in to this.

Bye Bye.

For customers using more than 5GB of storage, they will be required to purchase a 20GB storage upgrade for $40 per year, or a number of iCloud features -- iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail -- will stop working on the 30th until the issue is resolved.

ˆˆˆThis is misleading. Users can DOWNGRADE from their complimentary storage plan of 20GB to 10GB, which will provide 15GB iCloud storage in total, and pay $20 per year. They are NOT REQUIRED to purchase 20GB storage upgrade for $40 per year.

To do so, simply open System Preferences (Mac), then iCloud, then Manage, then Change Storage Plan, then Downgrade Options, enter your password and select 10GB option.

Please correct the article.

Come on Apple, don't be so stingy! You keep banging on about the seamlessness of your products, then you make your users carefully consider what they back up and don't. Give us all a freaking terabyte, it's 2013 for crying loud! You make plenty of money off Apps and music along with exorbitant profits on hardware, don't nickel and dime your customers for cloud storage, it's just stupid.

And Apple wonders why .Mac, then MobileMe and now iCloud fails to live up the hype. If you want it to be seamless, make it bloody seamless!! If you want us to live in iCloud, then give us room to put our stuff!!

</rant>

What a slap in the face! Yahoo gives away 1TB of free photo storage on Flickr, and Apple has to take away 15GB of the 20GB they gave to customers?

Seriously! Apple should really be more loyal to its most loyal customers. I've been around since the early days of .mac! Back when it was a paid service! Come on apple, I've given you at least $500 to use your e-mail service, not to mention the tens of thousands I've spent on hardware over the last decade. The least you can do is let me use a measly $15GB on your ginormous server. What does $15GB of HD space cost these days?? $1.50?

Edit: I might add, however, that I have not received this email. Have any others that go back to the .mac days not received this email?

I got that email today and am just barely below the limit of 5GB.

What I am hoping is that when they roll out the new iCloud/iWorks this fall that like photo storage is unlimited, same will apply to the iWork documents. That would rule.
