You can't be religious (as in believe in a God that is responsible for everything you see) and be a scientist, a man of science at the same time. If you think you are you are lying to others and most importantly to yourself.

It's unbelievable that people honestly think the modern Catholic Church is somehow anti-sciene. I guess we do live in a TL;DR world now, anyway where people misread history books and attribute the atrocities of the past to the good people of the present.

They are not, but the point is that ultimately you'll get an answer that God did it this way. You know the big bang and the atom, etc.

You're right, Nicholas Copernicus wasn't a scientist. These threads never disappoint.

I am a theist and a scientist. You do not determine who gets to be a scientist.

Argh. Mine still say preparing for shipment. I just wish they would change. My office is closed tomorrow until next tuesday. My printer doesn't work at home. I just want to presign for delivery but I can't print the page for that until they change to shipped. If I track by reference I see them sitting in the philly distribution center so I know they shipped. I have both tracking numbers already. Blarg.

Don't worry, next Tuesday, the iPhone 6S will still be the latest iPhone.

Funnily enough every stat I have ever seen shows that the frequency of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church is actually lower than in the general population.

Oh thank god. We wouldn't want to hold priests to a higher standard than the general public now, would we?

Considering I can cite countless news articles and opeds, I think the burden of proof is on you. Please cite your sources. Seeing has how one of two things will happen:

1) You will respond again without a source
2) You won't respond again

I predict these things because the prevalence of pedophilia in the Catholic church is an order of magnitude higher than normal. Furthermore, do I have to mention *again* the fact that they COVERED IT UP?!

The actual scary part is the prevalence of pedophilia in real life. It's higher than that of the Catholic church.

The scary part is that you believe that. Quote your source please. By the way, I don't expect a source will ever be provided by you, but why don't you surprise me?

Couldn't the discrepancy there be that there are certainly much less of them than the general population? But for full disclosure I am no statistician.

"One person who has attempted an estimate is Dr Michael Seto, a clinical and forensic psychologist at the Royal Ottawa Healthcare group.

In 2008 he wrote a book in which he put the prevalence of paedophilia in the general population at 5%."

As far as the Catholic church, SnapNetwork (The extreme upper estimate) quotes 5.6%, still within the margin of error to say "the numbers are the same".

The Pope himself (the lower estimate) quotes 2%, which is significantly lower than 5%.

This is so off topic it's not even funny, but I'm pleased you will be eating crow for now.

An argument either way is guess work because people aren't usually willing to admit that type of feeling. However, the best guesses indicate the prevalence of child abusers of any kind is negligibly higher, the same, or lower among Catholic priests.

What about people who don't believe in a pope?

Umm... don't believe in a Pope? It's not santa claus or the easter bunny... errr wait Santa is real, however it doesn't matter if you believe in what he believes or stands for, he's in a role that requires security, just as any president etc... Has nothing to do with religion and what one person thinks. It's about his personal safety. While I can't wait for Obama to go retire somewhere... I would never put his safety at risk over a phone or any other personal belief of what should or shouldn't happen.

None the less I would guess there is a bit of sarcasm but figured this type of comment will come up a lot. :)

I know that. I was here when 9/11 happened, the big power outage in 2003 (when people had to walk home 1+ hour or so since the subway stopped), and of course Sandy in 2012.

Yup, I was here for all that too. And the subway strike/shutdown in 2005. And the garbage strike and the Presidents Day Blizzard of 2003 as well....New York will live. It's ridiculous, but NYC will live.

(Regarding 2003 Blackout. I walked from the Javits Center across Manhattan to the 59th Street Bridge, over said bridge, and then up to Astoria near the Broadway N stop. It was fun actually. Walking the streets of Manhattan in pitch darkness was an experience I wont forget. as well as Times Square in total darkness. People were so mellow, sitting outside on their stoops, barbecuing meat from the fridge before it went bad, a little pot wafting through the air now and then and even people dancing in the streets to music from a portable radio. Much more like the Blackout of 1966 then '77)

All this piddle about the Catholic Church and sexual abuse. Meanwhile, I thought the left was ALL ABOUT alternative sex? Be that as it may, sex abuse of boys is way more widespread than anything related to the Catholic Church. Witness how U.S. Soldiers have been told to ignore sexual abuse of boys by Afghan allies. Yes, you read that right.

I disagree on this as a generalization, but I do believe that it can easily be used as one. My faith compels me to strive for excellence in technology and art and using my talent to help others around at home and around the world. I would think that "organized religion" has a very likely chance of turning into "group think" which is a dangerous thing. However this Pope (and I'm not Catholic by the way) has really shook things up. He's a really humble guy who I think is breaking down many of those issues in the Catholic church. I'm really interested in what he has to say about America and it's participation in the world. (again, I'm not Catholic... non-denominational protestant if you must know but I hate to think in terms of labels)

You can also say things like news, the media, movies, professional sports teams, drugs, advertising, fast food, republicans, democrats and any number of other things are a tool of suppression to sedate the masses. You find something that gets people all riled up and then add some brainwash tactics. Look at Donald Trump. That dude is scary with how he is directing masses of people to think stupid things (sorry if that offends anyone, but you may want a history lesson on fascism and then compare and contrast that to Trumps current campaign tactics)

The fact is I believe humans are prone to brainwashing and it's leveraged by many types of groups and organized religion has been especially known for it, but I don't think we can generalize people of faith with the mindless masses.

To add to your point... the big one everyone that is actually having an emotional response to not getting a phone?... welcome to a tool of complete mind bending sheep followers. Probably the most fanatical group of people outside of a cult I've ever met. Who in their right mind camps out for hours, or days/weeks for a phone? While I'm not catholic, if I had to choose between crazy... I think I'd step in line behind the pope.

Agreed. I'm pagan, and I'm down with this pope. Besides, I'd say it's a safe bet that this man has done a hell of a lot more philanthropic and charitable work than all of the complainers in this thread combined...

.. and tripled.

BL.

If you can name what he's done personally, great. Just giving speeches from his pulpit doesn't count. And he basically defended the Charlie Hebdo terrorists. And for what it's worth, I work in non-profit/philanthropy for a living. Not saying I've done any more, I'm just saying..

The point you miss is that it's not about not getting a phone on a certain day. I'm not affected by the delay. It's that a religious figure gets much attention, and causes disruption, for no. good. reason.

Except that the Vatican as a "country" is a farce, and so follows the rest.

Um, yeah, but that doesn't change its status and recognition by the rest of the world because some think its a farce.
