It offered me an exact third of what I paid for.
If work picks up, I might entertain the choice of trading in my M1 Ultra for an M2 Ultra, as even just the hdmi 2.1 and bluetooth 5.3 would make life much easier for me.
The extra power, would be a bonus.

this is pretty absurd, bought an M1 ultra studio completely maxed out at release - just over a year ago. i do intend to use it for many years, but $1500 trade in for a $8k computer? just ridiculous.
In Italy I got 2000€ trade in for a 5600€ Mac Studio.
Of course you can get better by selling used, but I was suprised nonetheless.

The Apple Trade in system has what someone at Apple Support labelled a 'glitch'. I wanted to find out how much my M1 Studio was worth as trade in. On entering the serial number it reports an 8TB SSD when in reality it's a 1TB SSD and it suggests $1300. My question to Apple Support was is this value for the 1TB or incorrectly reported 8TB version. I was passed around from Pre-sales to Tech Support to Sales and back again. Nobody could give me an answer. This was yesterday, today the 'glitch' has still not been rectified. Until the serial number report is accurate for my actual machine I'm not buying.

I got my midnight MBA M2 10 core/24GB/1TB last year on release day for $2,100. Just out of curiosity I checked Apple's trade price......$825. Wow. I'm keeping this for a long time as it more than serves me perfectly and I love it. In fact it's somewhat overkill for my usage but it's exactly what I wanted.

Mac Studio M1 Ultra 2022, basic configuration (original price $3,999):
Today's trade-in quote from Apple: $1,200 (Jun 6, 2023)
Today's trade-in quote from It's Worth More: $2,615 (Jun 6, 2023)

The quote is based on a device in flawless condition, original box and power cord included.

The choice is clear.

First, you made an actual financial decision on the musings of a rumor chimp?

Second, go to Apple, today if possible, and check if you can return outside the window. They might make an exception. I wouldn't mention Gurman, just that you didn't know a new one would be released so soon. Be polite, and, if one store says no, it's worth trying a second or third. I suspect there's some room for discretion in their policies.

Still, don't be too surprised if they come back with noes across the board.

Yep. I’ve learned the hard way that the only time to buy an Apple product is basically the day it’s released. People say they don’t depreciate quickly, but Apple sure thinks they do.

Also, about the only product you can be certain Apple won’t immediately replace is the iPhone. Many more than once (iPad 2, final Intel MacBook Air) they have released something and then replaced it barely six months later.

Apple is absolutely stone cold about their sale prices and surprise upgrades, and feels no shame in dropping products down the memory hole.

The real problem with this is the fact that their base specs simply aren’t good enough, combined with the fact that all their trade-in values are based on the minimum spec’d model and they don’t take upgrades into account at all.

And of course to top it off their trade-in values are borderline insulting when you see what they turn around and sell these devices for on the refurb store. Oh and the refurb store DOES charge more for upgraded models, so it’s not like they didn’t notice on the trade-in side.

My fully optioned 2022 M1 Mac Studio cost over $7,300 even with my military discount. Apple’s trade in value is $1,500.

Seven grand is not an annual upgrade expense for me. The Mac Studio replaced my 2013 MacPro (trash can) so it can be several years before another swap of my desk computer system. I also upgraded the two monitors to the new Studio Displays at that time.

At age 78, I might not get 7 or 8 more years tu use Apple’s gear🙀
