How many others are getting the same error?

I'm getting the same error, however I haven't tried logging with @icloud; did you use the same password as your gmail? I have @live.com by the way; and I also have icloud as rechable at/alias or whatever it was (it's been a while since I logged into the icloud.com website) - Apple is so frustrating!!

Hi cfurlin, Are you also getting the exact same error? How many others are getting the same error? I have not found any help online yet for this error. Maybe not many are getting this kind of error. I don't even know the technical reason why this may be happening to me. This is quite frustrating for me. Also it looks like there are people who were able to successfully change their Apple ID to their icloud address.

RESPONSE FROM APPLE SUPPORT: I called Apple Support today and they gave some vague answer that I am able to login using your icloud address so that is the maximum I can do. I explained them I wanted this icloud address as my primary email ID so that all Apple email will land on this ID but they don't seem to understand. They looked confused and told my icloud address is also my Apple ID because it is listed under 'reachable at' so it cannot be used as primary ID. They told I can only change it to any other third party address but not icloud. I showed them the apple support article which discussed the new option to change third party address to icloud address. Perhaps the support guys themselves had no idea about this new update from apple.

I am new to Apple, bought my first Mac this month. I thought Apple support guys must be better (and smarter) than other support teams (like Windows) but I guess they are also the same just like other companies. Some clueless people struggling to do their job who have no update about ongoing issues.

Yes, I'm getting the exact same error. I also created a new iCloud address and successfully added it to my existing iCloud account using a gmail account as primary. I get the very same message as you when trying to change the primary address to the iCloud address. I have been on support calls numerous times with no resolution. I had been trying every few days for a couple of weeks but it hasn't worked. I just stopped checking.

I love Apple products and many other things about Apple, but their support is not one of them. It's about as useful as Comcast support, IMO.

Hey, I found something!

I spoke to the customer support again. This time an attentive guy there was able to point out the issue that is happening with my account.

Apparently Apple has put some restriction on new iCloud email accounts and they cannot be used as primary Apple ID for first 30 days.

They have added the following note in the documentation page as well but it is written in fine text so it goes unnoticed. One has to pay attention to notice it. It says:

"If you try to change your Apple ID to an @icloud.com email address created within the last 30 days, you might be asked to try again later."

I made my @icloud address 2 days back, so I guess in my case I have wait for 28 more days after which I hope I will be able to change my primary Apple ID address. Let's see.

So, if your iCloud email address is new, may be its the same issue with your account.

Well that’s encouraging. I’ll let you know in about five days, when my ID hits 30 Days.

What disturbs me is that so many support people are clueless about it at Apple. They must have a “churn ‘em and burn ‘em” employee model for their support teams like Amazon does.

Okay, sure. Let me know.

Yes you're right. I gave them customer support feedback that 'all' their support executives must have such kind of basic information. Different support executives responding differently is not a good customer support experience. I hope they will take a note of it.

Past a month old. Still getting the error.

"You can change your Apple ID to any other email address* you control, as long as it's not already in use as an Apple ID." i.e. you can't merge existing Apple IDs for those of you wishing to do so and who might be confusing matters.

Yes, it is now all merged. I was using a gmail account, now I am using an iCloud account as my Apple ID.

I finally figured this out. All of my Apple e-mail IDs are tied to iTunes purchases. Because of that, I have NO Apple E-mail addresses available to change my @gmail address to. Other than creating a new one. What I didn't realize, is that Apple only allows new @icloud addresses to be created, not a new alias of an old account. My primary Apple ID was an @Mac e-mail address and ID. Unfortunately I can't merge my third party email ID into it, and can't create a new alias of it. So I'm stuck.

If I change to an apple address as my ID will I be able to change it to another apple id or 3rd party email in the future because with my current gmail account I can change to any email I want

I've read through this whole thread and its given me nothing but a headache!

I would like to know if its possible to change my @outlook.com appleid (used for iTunes purchases & iTunes Match), to a brand new icloud address, thus creating an alias and therefore using only my new @icloud.com and not the @outlook.com?

See, when I log into appleid (using @outlook.com) and click on edit and 'change apple id' - is that the point where I enter a brand new iCloud address?

There's no availability checker which confused me...do you keep trying variations of what you want until it accepts one?

Is that a correct understanding to this whole debacle? o_O

I’d really would like the ability move my itunes purchase account (gmail) to my primary Apple ID (iCloud). However it seems like established iCloud accounts are prohibited?

So instead, just pair these two AppleID's together by way of Family Sharing. That way, any previous purchases you made via your iTunes purchase account (gmail) will be available to your primary Apple ID (iCloud,) and vice-versa.

Umm... what I’ve been doing for years. I’m talking about combining them into a single account.

Yeah, I doubt that'll be happening anytime soon. So I offered up a semi-workaround you that you didn't mention. Lots of folks in your same situation aren't aware of it.

In any event, I was just trying to help. Carry on.

Which is really unfortunate that in today’s day and age this still isn’t possible...

Agreed. It doesn’t seem like they want that to happen. I’m sure technically they can make it happen, but really unfortunate that it hasn’t. My movie library is fairly large. Would hate to start over with my primary iCloud account. Yes family share is an option, but what happens when I reach 6 members and my family needs a 7th? That’s why combining them into a single account is in my best interest.

Yes, Family Share is a massive cludge.

Ridiculous Apple still force users with pre-existing non-Apple Apple IDs to not be able to merge with their main iCloud Apple ID. Been this way since MobileMe was launched, unfortunately.
Flipping Apple and their screwy policies; SNAFU.

I read that signing out of both Apple ID will allow you to change it? This did’t apply to purchases, does it?

Erm no. You can't sign out on every device you own and then change your gmail.com (or any non-Apple em) A-ID purchases to your iCloud.com A-ID.

Is this now resolved for you? Being it is way past 30 days, I'm curious if you were now able to make your @icloud.com email your primary Apple ID?
