They could possibly send emails to registered accounts.

I only knew about staingate repairs because I read news sites, otherwise I would have written it off without knowing about said repair I was a week away from not qualifying for.

There are likely those who think that because they're out of the normal warranty they're SOL.

The emails suggestion is a good point. Although, I’m not sure how Apple could divide their customer base who has an Apple Watch or not through an email system.

I dont think its 3 yrs from purchase but 3 yrs from activation. I dont think I have ever asked to show receipt for any Apple decice repair.

I have a friend that had this issue but never mentioned it until his girlfriend just casually mentioned it when we were all out for lunch. The look on his face for being "outted" was priceless. He's the usual Apple diehard that will never let you know when one of his Apple devices has an issue. It Never surprises me anytime I run into an Apple users like this, that try to hide defects or any kind of problem they're having with their Apple device. I just don't understand this need to be so protective of this company. Lol.

Sad but true...

Q-6

My 5s that I bought new and have been keeping as a spare phone swelled up and blew the display off. Apple told me I damaged the phone and would have to buy a new one. Screw Apple. Screw Apple and their non replaceable batteries.

My grandson's new Version 3 38mm stainless with cell, just was replaced due to a swollen battery, which cracked the sapphire crystal. Took a week to find another black stainless.

Swollen battery and as they should replace free of charge. You would think by know materials used for rechargeable batteries would be much better today than it was a few years ago.

I had this exact issue on my out of warranty Series 1. They did it for free.

I agree and it’s because of the mystique and elegance of Apple products they back them like this.

Unmissable and elegant and alluring Apple for life.

Give him a good slap across the face. Nobody owes anything to a company they purchase products from. Especially if they buy a defective product due to a design flaw. You can be an Apple ecosystem advocate while still calling them out when they screw up.

If you purchase an item with a credit card many cards come with a one year warranty extension for items you purchase with it. I didn’t know this until someone shared it with me but it’s true. You’ve got to do your research and read the fine print ahead of time to make sure you’re getting a card that doesn’t exclude electronic devices and you’ve got to keep your receipt and statement showing the charge for the item but if you get the right card and keep the purchase related documentation you can take advantage of the benefit and pass on Apple Care to extend the warranty in many cases.

So does anyone know that factors that cause the battery to swell? How dangerous is this before you have a visible cue? I regularly run (and I the summer, swim) with my watch on. This is more concerning to me than a phone which isn't typically strapped to my body all day.

Dammit DeadPool, do you really want us to believe;
Someone wore a watch that is swollen
This person didn't think that someone would notice
This person didn't think that the parts would fall out
A die hard Apple fan doesn't know that Apple can and prolly will replace their defective device

Thats a little http://oyster.ignimgs.com/mediawiki/apis.ign.com/pokemon-blue-version/e/e6/Farfetchd.gif

Apple will repair select Apple Watch Series 2 models that do not power on or have a swollen battery free of charge as part of a new service policy.

apple-watch-expanded-battery.jpg

An original Apple Watch with an expanded battery via Apple Support Communities

"Apple has determined that under certain conditions, some Apple Watch Series 2 devices may not power on or they may experience an expanded battery," wrote Apple, in an internal document distributed to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers on Friday and subsequently obtained by MacRumors.

"Apple will service eligible devices free of charge," according to the document, numbered SN4534 in Apple's internal GSX portal. "Apple will authorize coverage for eligible devices for three years after the original date of purchase."

The policy was issued in at least the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe, so it is likely a worldwide initiative where service providers are available.

A swollen battery can prevent an Apple Watch from powering on or cause the display to burst open. Photos of the issue have been shared by customers in the Apple Support Communities and MacRumors forums in recent months, but the majority of the incidents are first-generation models released in 2015.

Eligibility is limited to any 42mm-sized Apple Watch Series 2 models, including Sport, Edition, Hermès, and Nike+ variants, pending a visual-mechanical inspection, according to a companion document numbered OP1977. The warranty status of the Apple Watch does not affect coverage, the document states.

This new policy does not apply to the original Apple Watch, Series 1 and Series 3 models, or any 38mm model. A few years ago, however, Apple enacted a similar policy for original Apple Watch models with swollen or expanded batteries that offers free repairs within three years of the original date of purchase.

Affected customers can visit the Contact Apple Support page, select Apple Watch -> Battery, Power, and Charging -> Bring in for Repair to schedule an appointment with the Genius Bar at an Apple Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. There are also options to contact Apple advisors by phone or online chat. Battery replacements are completed at an off-site Apple Repair Center.

Apple advises customers inquiring about a refund for a previous Apple Watch Series 2 battery replacement to contact its support advisors.

Apple has not announced this policy publicly as it does with some of its other repair programs, but MacRumors has verified the internal document's authenticity with multiple sources. However, outside of our control, some Apple employees advise customers that no such policy exists. In these cases, our only advice is to keep trying or escalate the case to a senior advisor if possible.

[doublepost=1523819811][/doublepost]They better add Series 3 to the list also. The glass lifts off and in many cases cracks completely around the glass at the bend. Check out all the posts regarding this on the Apple Support Community boards. I had to fight to get Apple to send me a replacement after wearing the watch for less than 3 months. We are all being told that it's user abuse, when in fact it is NOT. There is a definite defect with some of these series 3 as well. At some point they will have to admit to it. But for the time being they are trying to blame it on the wearers.

Battery tech has not really changed in decades.

Because they weren't rechargeable

How many electronic products do you know will bust open within a short period due of poor quality, or a design flaw.

Not sure why we would hold Apple to a lower standard of quality just because you like their pretty features.

Happened to mine, thankfully they replaced it as it was less than 6 months. Was lucky I was near an Apple store in London. Wouldn't like to be in a city without a genius bar and this happen after 12 months.

Happened to me too. After two days of receiving it!!!! And they denied me a warranty repair with some ******** excuse! Luckily I paid by creditcard and denied them the money through them. I bought a new one though. So even steven i guess.

I just got my series 2 replaced 2 weeks ago today for the 3rd time after multiple issues with the watch rebooting and not turning on. Since the end of February, I had to repeatedly take in my watch having to send out my series 2 to their repair division 3 times. They kept telling me it was probably a software issue until the watch didn't turn on anymore. This would explain why I'm now on a free series 3 thanks to the endless amount of resets and visits to the apple store over the last month and a half

You ended up getting a S3 version and you're sounding like you're complaining?

Apple & you went through a bit of trouble and yet STILL didn't leave you in the "out-of-warranty" or it's not us realm and serviced your needs like a great company should and even upgraded you! So I'm not sure if you're actually complaining or making some sort of point that at least with some difficult Apple has documented and realized this is a larger problem vs a few one-offs?

Where are all those Samsung trolls at?

Also, why is Apple not being so public about this repair program? Seems like they don't want to repair these or want to keep it on the low for publicity purposes.

Trolls be busy trying to make excuses for a sub-par upgrade and reconcile that Apple's iPhone 7-8 seemingly low end upgrade was far better than the hand they were dealt. ;) Too often I feel these arguments are monkey-see-monkey-do and are beginning to bore me. Let's stay focused on topic of Smart Watches here since your comment is more relevant to the Galaxy S vs iPhone conversation.

I sold my S2 Nike+ a few weeks back and not realizing before selling my IP7 that my workouts from "Strong!" where not backed up. Royally proper-F'd right now and unmotivated to goto the gym of late. My debate right now is:
Nike+ S3 (non-LTE) 42mm
iPhone 7 256GB (again) non-warranty
OR
Nike+ S3/Non-LTE 42mm wait 2wks get iPhone X 256GB hmmm.
ok Nike+ S3 42mm (non-LTE) use the spare $700 buy stock and wait for the climb in 30 days.

You "think" only apple batteries swell?

sigh

Well I personally have some that do and some that don't, so it must be possible to design so they don't, including an original iPhone. So I have to guess its possible. But your expectation seems to be pretty low, sigh.

I had mine exchanged in like 5 days (nike model II). At first, it didn't charge and got hot, and while I was having a chat with Apple support, the screen just popped out. UPS came with a special package to send it, then in 5 days they brought a new one.

What do you want them to do exactly? Apple is open about this repair policy in store, online chat or over the phone. If the customer has an issue with the watch, they very may well visit sites like these or contact Apple directly to find out more anyways, which would be explained to them. Other tech sites have reported Battery replacement concerns from Apple in the past from issued memo’s.

Also, I highly doubt an expanding Apple Watch Battery would reach a major publicity level, this isn’t on a level that Samsung’s Note 7 was in comparison.
They’re NOT open about this. This isn’t necessarily public knowledge, as the only people that know about it are the ones that frequent sites like MR. Most of the time the geniuses will act dumb when you mention something like this repair program. Happened to me on more than one occasion.

I wonder if the third gen will also suffer with this issue...

My first gen had to be sent in. The stores wouldn't help me but calling Apple worked out. Luckily I don't use my watch that much.
