Because it's an exercise in futility and not a good indicator of demand, particularly at first launch. They told us this. Apple has gotten so complex in and huge in their supply chain that it's literally impossible to understand anything meaningful. They used to brag about pre-sale numbers, but no longer. I'm surprised they don't let shareholders know some specific things.
Analysis are constantly wrong about "supply" issues as proven multiple times when Apple reports numbers. There was a huge Nikkei article on iPhone 7 supply problems, reduction in orders, waning demand, etc...all were proven false.

Having wet hands or wearing gloves are less practical? Absurd. You just hate that FaceID is actually incredible and can work in many situations TouchID does not.Your situations are less practical than the ones I posted. but hey nice try.
Both have issues, but FaceID is the future for MANY more reasons than just authenticating your phone.

So you never use your phone with gloves or while working out?Who cares about FaceID in those situations. I wouldn't even be using the phone if my hands were any of those (other than the gloves). But I WOULD use my phone is situations where it can't read my face, like lying down.
Apple needed to figure out a way to have the phone read your fingerprint through the screen before going bezeless. And find a way to put the speakers behind the screen. The problem with current day Apple is that nobody invented it for them yet.
