How does that account for the number of people posting on this forum and on social media (such as Twitter) with keyboard issues? I wish I could feel confident in buying a new Mac. If it wasn’t for the keyboard issues I’d be buying a new Air.
Echo chamber, sample bias, etc.

This has all the marking of a self perpetuating myth. People just "know it's true" even if the data doesn't support it.

It's possible the data I'm finding doesn't capture the actual problem, but it's the only non-anecdotal data I've been able to find.

I'm just hoping their answer isn't a further extreme, with stationary keys that provide haptic feedback, in place of actual travel.

They probably won't, but you know Jony probably dreams of that and would love to "design" that minimalist feature-reduction in the worst way.

Ok, you seem really smart. You might not know the answer to this but it’s worth a shot, if I buy a 2018 MacBook Air what are the chances that the keyboard will fail? are we talking higher than normal?

This is why I love Apple.
They are always working to put customers first.
You won't get this level of customer care from a Samsung, Dell or HP.

I’ve actually had good experiences with Dell, in my experience at least the best, just complaining of a minor uneven core temp issue (worked to spec) they replaced my refurb 1080P 7567 ($700) with a $1,300 7577 4K and maxed out specs. They also had no problem warranty wise with the fact I had upgraded my laptop’s WiFi card and NVME SSD, they returned the upgraded parts to me along with the new laptop.

Plus almost every part is pretty easy to replace should anything go wrong post warranty, they provide service manuals and disassembly guides. Their corporate support is actually excellent as well. I mean the 7 series Latitudes come with default 3 years in home service if remote diagnostics are not fruitful.

HP is probably the worst quality wise, everyone I’ve met with one of those has had issues with HP laptops weighing a year or two.

I am looking to buy the MacBook Pro but might as well wait for SunnyCove and hopefully upgraded keyboards at this point.

Apple keeps saying this is isolated but haven't shared any data on frequency. If it is rare then they should quantify it. I suspect it's because the numbers would be jaw dropping--almost everyone that I know who has a >2015 model has had a keyboard problem.

I'm on a 2015 right now and for my business I keep buying refurbished 2015 models from apple. They work great. No keyboard issues. Lots of useful ports (I have zero devices that support USB-C).

All of this due to a crazed obsession with being thin. I'm not sure if or when I'll every buy a post 2015 model. I wonder if I'll be forced to switch back to Windows or a Chromebook if Apple can't get back to making laptops that are reliable and useful.

(BTW any bets on when the iPhone has zero ports with only wireless charging, bluetooth, wifi? I'm hanging on dearly to my 6s)

As I'm typing this right now, my 12" Macbook keyboard is suffering from this awful design flaw.
There is no fix for it and it's a reoccurring problem.
keys randomly stick in ..what a horrible idea this butterfly mechanism was..and what annoys me the most is Apple's arrogance not accepting it's a flawed mechanism and not bringing back the tried and tested reliable standard keyboards.

even when it works, the butterfly keyboard is absolutely the worst keyboard for typing ever.I even prefer the iPad Pro smart case keyboard to this awful keyboard.

as much as I dislike iPhones (new ones) I love Mac OS and the 12" Macbook in particular but this butterfly keyboard is so bad,I really am thinking about getting a 1-pre butterfly Macbook 2-switch to Huawei Matebook or Microsoft Surface laptop.

Shame on Apple's design /engineering team for coming up with this stupid, flawed design.

OR, and I know this is a wild, crazy idea, the kind of idea that a company with a slogan like Think Different might have; they could redesign it so it works properly and has the durability of a real keyboard, and then voluntarily retrofit every single one of the damn things that they have ever sold. They send you a box, you mail it in, you get it back 2 days later with a keyboard that isn't the laughing-stock of the laptop world. They've got all the effing money in the world. They can do that and it wouldn't be a blip financially. What it would do is help un-tarnish an increasingly tarnished brand and build loyalty.

That'd be a valid option IF the 2018 keyboards weren't prone to the same issues. I had my top case replaced already (15" 2018), so not sure upgrading makes any sense in that regard. Maybe the issues aren't that widespread with the membrane, but I feel like it's no dust but more of a mechanical issue so not sure it helps.

They should just connect all the key caps to the aluminum chassis with a thin layer of silicon so it’s IP67. They will find a way, hopefully soon

I finally got my keyboard fixed last week.

For an example of how bad it's been for months check my comment here (on Dec 10): Gen 3 butterfly keyboard.

I feared the 3-5 business day quote, but it actually got back to me within 48 hours.

I /think/ the keyboard is exactly the same (the replacement part was "Topcase with Battery, Space Gray, ANSI"). Anyways, I've put a GhostCover on my keyboard, and while I don't love it, it's better than the alternative of having a non-functioning keyboard.

This "new" keyboard is a really big problem, I'm yet to meet a person who didn't have any problems with it, mine was changed TWICE! I use my macbook pro for work and I had to wait for almost two weeks for it to get repaired, both times, because apple authorised service provider had to order them from apple (i asked why don't they order more keyboards for repairs, and the ansewer was - apple does not allow them to do so).. and guess what - keys get stuck regularly, my space key is still buggy, most of my colleagues with macbooks had their keyboards changed, some of them who use external keyboards got away with only pressured air (not always using external keyboards), this is complete madness.. i know two macbook pros (2016) which had their stuck when cpu usage increased.

I like the feel when i type, but at the moment i would not recommend macbook for anyone, just because of this sh*t keyboard.

You can never be certain that any device will not fail, but at least with Apple, their service is the best of all the computer manufacturers.

You know what's fair? That Apple has to fix their own stupid design mistake, and they have to replace the entire top case at their own cost because they designed it so that the keyboard can't be replaced on its own. I really hope this is costing Apple so much money that they will learn their lesson for good, and redesign their products to be more repairable. Maybe next time they'll think twice about using glue and rivets.

The 2015 model doesn't provide the other hardware requirements, such as 32GB RAM or updated CPU. I actually like my 2018, just very specifically minus the keyboard. Using an external keyboard mitigates that issue.

The 2015 MBP GPU is fine in 2019.

This must be a trolling post or you're extremely naive. Apple puts customers first when they have bad PR or are caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Apple puts $$$ first.

Think of how long they DENIED the keyboard problems and forced customers to pay for the $350+ repair. During this I had an Apple store salesperson lie to me to my face there was any problem at all saying they haven't even heard of any issues. It wasn't until that huge petition and bad PR they started doing something about it.

"Samsung, Dell, or HP" wouldn't likely have this giant debacle in the first place. I could replace my keyboard on my Dell XPS with a $20 part within 5 minutes.
