LG's new UltraFine 5K Display is now available for purchase for $974 on Apple's website in the United States, with orders initially estimated to ship in 3-5 business days but quickly slipping to 2-4 weeks.

Apple has extended its $974 sale price for the display until March 31, 2017, when the price will return to $1,299.95. The discount was previously set to expire on December 31, but it was likely extended due to the display's lack of availability until late into the month. Apple's discount on USB-C adapters is similarly extended.

Apple teamed up with LG to create both the 4K and 5K UltraFine Displays, specifically designed to work with the new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro. Both displays connect over a single cable, but the 5K display is only compatible with the new MacBook Pro, as it requires a Thunderbolt 3 connection.

LG's smaller 21.5-inch UltraFine 4K Display began shipping in early November, while the 5K version briefly became available to purchase in late November. The displays serve as a successor to Apple's own Thunderbolt Display, which it discontinued earlier this year amid its departure from the standalone display business.

The display's Thunderbolt 3 port enables pass-through charging to the new MacBook Pro at up to a full 85W. Its wide DCI-P3 color gamut shows more vibrant colors compared to the traditional sRGB standard. The display also has a built-in camera, microphone, stereo speakers, and three downstream USB-C ports at 5 Gbps speeds.

Tech Specs
• 27-inch IPS LED display
• 5,120×2,880 pixels resolution
• 16:9 at 217 PPI
• 60Hz refresh rate
• DCI-P3 wide color gamut
• 500 cd/m2 brightness
• 1 Thunderbolt 3 and 3 USB 3.1 Type-C ports
• Thunderbolt 3 cable included
• Power delivery up to 85W to new MacBook Pro

LG's UltraFine 5K Display is also available in Canada for $1,274, in Australia for $1,416.95, in the United Kingdom for £884, in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain for €1,049, in Hong Kong for $7,488, in Singapore for $1,408, and elsewhere. Pricing and shipping dates vary.

Update 8:42 AM: Shipping estimates have already slipped to 2-4 weeks.

Anyone look at these up close and can tell me if the extra cost is worth the cost in screen quality over a Dell 4K? ($500) The Dell 4K are super sharp for me and the coding I do mostly (clean text).

I don't care about ports. I do not do Photography or Photoshop so color accuracy is not super important. I don't play games so latency not that big of a deal.

thx

Just bought one for me and one for a friend before the shipping window goes to hell. Can't wait to get it next week. New MBP coming Friday, perfect.

If you don't have a REAL reason to need 5k, stick with the Dell displays. They're great and these 5k are only needed by a very small subset of a niche market.

Sounds like you are fishing for a reason to save $500. So, do that.

why can't apple bring back there thunderbolt display ina . slimmer 5k version. such a shame, it looked so nice and matched the macbooks very well. and tho dated, still the best "built" dissplay on the market

Sounds to me like someone looking at the cost/benefit ratio. Someone wanting to buy a product that fits their use case instead of 5K just because. But hey, tomato-tomahto amirite?

On topic: Smart decision by Apple. It would seem a bit disingenuous to have a sale price when no product is available and full price when there's stock.

Had it in my cart, went to the bathroom, returned. Now late Jan. I'll just pass I guess. No rush since the discount is 3+ months out.

So, do you have a Flat Screen TV that looks like this? No need to stare at the side profile, right?

Yep. Looks identical to this 5k. Good job.

Always.

But mostly because I have a Dell 4K and when I get my new macbook I will be able to hook up 2 more 4K monitors for a total of three at the same time at full rez (not HDMI) which would be a dream system for me. With the 5K monitors one can only hook up 2 to a macbook pro. So I just wanted to make sure there was not a resolution WOW factor I was missing between the 5K and 4K.

will prob. go the 3 Dell 4K route.

thanks!

This. I don't understand. LG has plenty of monitors that are aesthetically pleasing but the LG/Apple monitor looks utilitarian/pedestrian. Apple had to provide their desired specs AND approve the design. Why did the final product end up looking like something you'd see in a bulk purchase used in cube farm call center? I'd love to know the rational behind giving that design an approving thumbs up.
