Cut the bezels of the 8 off and make it in an iPhone XS form factor. Apple will sell a lot of those

Actually it’s 33.33% off the price not 50%.

He said "of" not "off" which obviously means he's referring to the 8, not a % discount off the XR. Buying the XR means paying an extra 50% above the cost of the refurbished 8, which is just one perfectly good reason to not buy the XR in your scenario.

Apple today added the 2017 iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus to its online store for refurbished products in the United States, offering the smartphone at a discount for the first time.

The refurbished store has a selection of 64GB iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray for sale, all of which are discounted by 14 to 16 percent.

iphone8refurbished-800x459.jpg

The 64GB iPhone 8 models are priced at $499, a discount of $100 off of the regular price of $599, while the 64GB iPhone 8 Plus models in the refurbished store are available for $599, also a $100 discount off of the regular $699 price.

Apple sells the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus as lower-cost alternatives to the flagship iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. The devices feature a fast A11 Bionic chip, a Touch ID Home button, and a glass body for wireless charging.

There are no iPhone 8 or 8 Plus models with higher storage capacities available from the refurbished store at this time, but refurbished stock fluctuates frequently based on the available devices that Apple has on hand.

Refurbished stock is also limited in quantity and can sell out. Checking the refurbished site often or using a tracking site is the best way to figure out when a particular model that you might want is in stock.

Apple has been offering iPhones in its online refurbished store since 2016, but it often takes some time for new models to show up there. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, for example, were released in September 2017 but have just shown up on the refurbished site.

Purchasing a refurbished iPhone from Apple is a good way to get a like-new device at a lower price point. All of Apple's refurbished products are tested, certified, cleaned, and guaranteed with a one-year warranty that can be extended with AppleCare+.

For refurbished iPhone models, Apple provides a fresh battery and a new outer shell, ensuring peak performance and no scratches or other cosmetic damage on the device that you receive.

[doublepost=1541219098][/doublepost]So I have an IPhone SE and I’m debating between the regular 8 vs XS how would you compare the two on one handed use and ease of use in general? Thank you any advice is greatly appreciated!

I bought a refurbished iphone 8 plus from apple online about a month ago. Im confused why the MR article says they are just now starting to sell them.
That's interesting.. It's already sold out on Apple's website as of this moment btw..
Apple had 64Gb option only before they're gone.. Was there any larger capacity last month? And how much did you pay?

If I was in the market I would definitely buy a refurb 8 over a new 7 any day.

I returned my refurb 7 for a new 8. VASTLY better battery life. Maybe I got unlucky but the 7 battery drained like melting ice cream cone.

I just pulled the trigger on one of these (currently on a 5yr old 5s). Have had no trouble with refurbed in the past and the new phones simply aren't doing it for me (well not for a grand anyway). I'm a pretty simple user, there are more important things. On the down side, I'll probably torment myself though and leave it in the box for 13 days while I make 5 more runs to the Apple store just to make sure I really didn't want an XR. Plus the whole 50% v 33% thing is just a little to weedy for me.

Sorry, i made a mistake. The phone I bought was a 7 plus not 8 plus. Embarrassing that I got this wrong. Bummer; had I waited a few weeks I could have gotten an 8 plus for the same price.

Excuse me. That is not the correct way to calculate savings in this case.
Savings?!?!?! Who said anything about savings, but you? This is an article about the iPhone 8, thus the rest of us are using the iphone 8 as the base for our comparisons. The iPhone XR costs 50% more than the Apple refurb iPhone 8 - Plain, simple fact.

Please do not try to give someone with degrees in economics basic math lessons. It is wrong to call the XR an increase since this discounted refurbished 8 came on the market after the XR and it is silly since not only is the 8 an older phone, but it is refurbished in this case.
Oh here we go.

It's CORRECT to compare the prices of two products, especially when using the subject of the article as the base for comparative percentages. Just because you are trying to talk down to everyone else, does not make your opinion correct and CERTAINLY does not make the rest of us wrong.

You can argue about an 'OLD PHONE', but until very recently Apple was selling the iPhone SE and iPhone 6/6S. Those were old phones. The iPhone 8 has the same CPU as the iPhone X, another OLD phone for you, I suppose.

For people who have not embraced the skyrocketing smart phone price increases and have not succumbed to the 'Oh you're using a year old phone, yuck' mentality of those with multiple economics degrees, the refurb iPhone 8 a very good option.

And just to rub it in, anyone looking to buy an iPhone 8 from the Apple refurb store, would have to pay 50% MORE, to get the iPhone XR, no matter how your try to warp savings into that simple, factual statement.

I'd go into an Apple Store (or borrow one from someone for a few minutes) and try them if you can. I'm an SE user too and find it fits my hand very nicely and all parts of the screen are within one-handed thumb radius without having to shimmy the phone around in my hand. For me, not so much with the bigger phones.
[doublepost=1541261766][/doublepost]Y'all know about https://refurb-tracker.com, right? I used it to get a specific iPad I wanted, and it alerted me when it appeared. You have to futz with the search terms a bit to narrow it down to what you want, but you can test your search right on the site before you set the alert.

Edit: You did not originally say increase. That was another person. I didn’t realize I was replying to 2 different people.

Again there is no 50% increase here. You can say the XR “costs 50% more than a refurbished iPhone 8,” but not “the XR is a 50% increase” as you did in your initial post. Do you get that? Not only is the XR a newer phone, but it is not refurbished. This is not apples to apples. I explained the rationale above.

When I say “old” I do not mean obsolete. Old means not that it’s not the new model. This applies to the 7, 8 and X. It does not matter if they’re still being sold. You can still buy 2018 MY cars as the 2019 MY cars start coming in. However as soon as the new cars start arriving, the 2018 is no longer the new model.

Once again when you choose a refurb iPhone 8 instead of buying an XR, you are saving 33.33%.

And by the way I’m using a 2 year old phone and I could care less about what other people think. The 7 Plus is good enough for me. You would know that if you looked at my dog. Do not make assumptions.

Nice to see some lower cost options. Interesting article on how much lifetime costs for owning a smartphone.

I guess these kind of things are better put in to perspective... If a consumer pays $5 for a coffee a day, assuming they buy their first cup at 18 and last at 78 like in the article, they will have spent 110K which is 25K more than you would spend on Phones, apps, contracts etc.
Wow, better dump your Apple shares, Coffee is where it is at :D

This was all a big miunderstanding. I replied to 2 different people thinking were the same person. I only looked at the reply and not at the names. Countblah and Jpack?

If the price of a discounted phone is 500 and the price of the XR is 750
then the XR is 50% more expensive than the discounted phone.
I believe the person stated:
$250 or 50% of the price

Sorry, but that is a big difference to non 1%ers
Which I translate into:
$250 or (The XR is ) 50% (more expensive) of the price (of the 8)

They were replying to someone who stated the saving in a particular way
It would be correct to say that the iPhone XR costs 7.15% more than the iPhone 8. (749-699/699)=0.0715.
The iPhone 8 was at $499, a $100 discount off the usual $599 price
I guess people here are giving you a lesson in reading comprehension. The price of the 8 as stated in the article was originally $599 not $699

It's really not hard: (749-499)/749=0.3337 or 33.37% less. You can also look at $499 as being 66.66% of $749.

If you want to compare the current new and refurbished 2018 prices then it would be a discount of (599-499/599)=16.7%

Person stated that the XR is 50% more than the cost of the discounted 8, doesn't matter when a phone came on the market or how you want it calculated.
People are just going by how they stated things.

Perhaps a good enough reason not to go off half cocked putting you economic credentials on the line :D

Yes, this is fine. If you click on the up arrow of the quoted posts you can see where this confusion came from. I was quoting two people using different terms.

Saying that the XR costs 50% more or is 50% more expensive is obviously correct.

JPack used the term “increase” and increase is not correct. More expensive and increase are not the same. More expensive is used to compare prices regardless of what was released first.

Increase is only used to compare an equivalent old model to the new one. Which is why I said the XR costs 7.15% more than the 8 when new. 699 to 749.

I was in a hurry and didn’t realize I quoted JPack, a different person, and that Countblah had not expressed what he said in the same way.

Now I was pissed because I have an above average command of math and I believe it was JPack who was trying to give me a math lesson. I am the type of person that remembers numbers extremely well. SS, CC and Debit cards, insurance policy #, watch serial numbers, drivers license, Con Ed, you get the picture.

No worries...

Apple refurbs are basically brand new. The only thing different are that the devices do not come in the original packaging.

Some parts are new like externals and battery I think but most components inside would still be used. So it's a bit of both.

My friend was waiting for this. They wanted a new phone to replace their iPhone SE. The iPhone 8 is currently the best "small" phone Apple still offers. :/
Yeah that’s the unfortunate part I wish they had a smaller XS, even though it’s only a little bigger than the 8 the lack of bezels makes it feel bigger swiping down from the bottom of the phone.
