I really wish Apple had put a fan in the Air. I'm sure this laptop will meed my needs 99% of the time, but I paid to do some heavy video editing/AI upscaling in the near-ish future and I worry about the thermal throttling. As such, I'm stuck either going with a desktop or a MacBook Pro.
That is pretty much exactly what the MacBook Pro 13 inch is.

Cool, though I wouldn’t go near a base model or that midnight fingerprint magnet color. That’s just me though.
Headed into that MBA preorder, I was 100% prepared, and excited, to order the Midnight. Navy, and similar dark blues (like Midnight) is one of my fav colors. It's the new black. But at the very last second, I changed my order to Starlight. SO GLAD I DID. While I like Midnight, a lot (when pristine), I do not like looking like I ate a bag of greasy potato chips prior to using my MBA.

I'd be curios to hear from other Midnight owners how they find that finish performs in day-to-day use.

I think what he's saying is that the reason for the number of refurbs available is due to returns from either:
1) Spoiled children who received a MBA as a gift from their Daddy but think that it is a toy and really want a MBP
2) YouTubers who buy the MBA to record an unboxing video, then because they don't have enough views to monetize their channel, end up returning the MBA within the 14 day return window.

If YouTubers bought a MBA to do an unboxing / review video, why would they keep the MBA once they're done?

Smart YouTubers would return what they don't need.

Either the markup on the new units is huge (which is my bet), or they're selling the returns to limit their losses. Better to lose only $200 on a sale than all $1000. And it's not really a loss if the original purchaser had to pay the restocking fee.
But do they ever charge a restock?

3) People who weren't able to get it right away and missed the I'm Cool window so they returned it. This could be part of #2 also.

Plenty for an office user as well. I manage a day spa off mine. 20+ active Safari tabs, Mail, WhatsApp, Canva, etc all run congruently without issue.
Same. I have the base M2 Air (8/256GB) and no issues. It has been a wonderful computer for everyday office/business use, such as productivity apps (iWork/MS Office) etc.. Also, it seems like a great computer for college students. Our family has shared iCloud storage of 2TB, so space really isn't an issue.

If you need to store large files locally on your laptop, then yeah, the the base MBA is not enough. For many people, it is just fine.

Edit: I should mention that I got my M2 MBA brand new for $1,049 on sale at BB about a month ago, so folks might want to shop around before jumping on these refurbished units from Apple.

Exactly. When a product is overhyped, coupled with a generous return policy, you end up with a lot of returns. I love my M2 MBA but I am coming from a five year old Windows computer. Many get caught up in the "gotta have the latest" mindset and end up regretting it, either because the improvements are minor, or the cost is unjustifiable, or the buzz simply wears off. The change from talking about it, to living with it, can be enough for people to change their minds.

I keep meaning to put my backups in the cloud but then that oldschool part of my brain takes over and I put things on external SSDs instead.
I did recently start paying for iCloud storage. Only 50 GB but it’s sooo useful when I want to share stuff with my partner when we’re not within Airdrop distance to each other.

Yeah, we subscribed to the large 2TB iCloud option so our "kids" could backup their Macs for college etc.. Each individual uses their Apple ID to access files, so I am not worried about anyone accidentally delete my files or anything. It's a pretty good deal for a family of 5 adults. I love having access to all of my files wherever I go. Occasionally, it is real convenient to retrieve info on my phone while out and about.
