Not in the Canadian store. It's only $25 less than the brand new version with student discount.

But of course not everyone is entitled to a student/education discount, so for them (the non-education people) it's a better deal. But $25 savings is still $25 in your pocket and you have nothing to lose in buying certified refurbished.

Others may disagree, but I'd rather a new one for the extra $25. Even better, you can get the M1 version with 16GB of RAM for even less than the entry level M2 refurbished.

Really bad deal, in my opinion.

Either your calculator app is miscoded, a typo or you need to check your eyes it’s a $65 difference for the 8GB RAM and 512GB storage between Apple Canada EDU and Refurb. Edu $1774 and refurb $1709, unless you direct me to what you are seeing $65 is some savings.

$1,374 (student) - $1,349 (refurb) = $25

Methinks your calculator app must be all manner of messed up. Then again, it's not like you should even need one for such an easy calculation.

Talk about "alternative facts". LOL

Headed into that MBA preorder, I was 100% prepared, and excited, to order the Midnight. Navy, and similar dark blues (like Midnight) is one of my fav colors. It's the new black. But at the very last second, I changed my order to Starlight. SO GLAD I DID. While I like Midnight, a lot (when pristine), I do not like looking like I ate a bag of greasy potato chips prior to using my MBA.

I'd be curios to hear from other Midnight owners how they find that finish performs in day-to-day use.
Thanks for justifying your purchase without any reason.
I have a starlight mba too, it’s great and midnight is also great because the fingerprints aren’t that bad if one is not a neat freak. Has beeen said a million times now. Now go and focus on the important things in life!

Another refurb fan here.

Cheaper, and everything else is the same as a 'new' one, including warranty.

What's not to like?

Only catch is that you can't order anything you want from the Apple line. You can only choose from what is currently in the refurb store, with no warning of what will be in there, when, and for how long.

you’re looking at US prices, and the student price on the 512GB model with 10 core GPU is $1399

US prices have a $50 difference and CAD prices are indeed $65 different.

Nope. These are Canadian prices.

$1,374 CAD (education) - $1,349 CAD (refurbished) = $25 CAD difference, like I've had to repeat 3 times now. LOL

It's a $25 CAD difference. Not a penny more and not a penny less. Accept reality or not. I don't care.

*facepalm* he said the 512GB model. You’re linking 256GB. But I guess that’s where the confusion arose. He assumed you were talking about the 512GB model for some reason.

There are situations where apple refurbs are a great deal even though the discount isn’t huge. A big one is that you can get configurations at a discount that are otherwise hard to find since most retailers only carry stock configs and those that do have bto aren’t always cheaper. Edu is good too if you qualify (or bend the rules). Out of state tax free purchases are largely a thing of the past, at least where I live. Most online retailers now charge tax here.
Refurb makes most sense on current models. Discontinued ones are usually cheaper elsewhere (take a look at 2018 iPad Pro 11” prices at the refurb store - they are still way up there). I’ve bought many things from the refurb store and they were always like new and never had a problem with any of them.

A refurbished product from Apple is treated the same as brand new in terms of them standing behind it's quality and support. I think people simply have a psychological hangup over the term "refurbished". I'd suggest getting over that hangup and applying that $120 savings towards Apple Care.

Each to their own, but when I'm spending a decent amount on a machine already, that extra $120 isnt a huge saving for me. I'd rather just pay the extra at that point. I also tend to always BTO the configuration I'm after - I never buy base config, and in the past I rarely found the config I have been after with any refurb item.
Just my own personal opinion. I appreciate others will disagree and I haven't said anything negative about the refurb units. Just, a $120 saving isn't enough of a saving IMO.

I didnt think Edu discounts applied to refurb units?? I haven't checked for several years though, so maybe that changed?!

They never applied concurrently.

But then you misunderstood the above, he was listing ways of which you can find discounts on BTO configs, other than Apple refurbs.

Hardly "paltry". It's more than what most people need. If someone truly needs more, they're likely looking at MacBook Pros anyway.
Paltry is exactly what it is. For the price they charge it should have 16GB, no point defending the indifendibile.

And then if it were 16GB people would've been saying "For the price they charge is should have 32GB" etc. So it goes. The fact remains that 8GB is more than plenty for most people and they wouldn't gain any tangible benefit from 16GB anyway.

It sounds like what I underlined above is the real issue, not the fact that it's refurbished. If you did find the configuration you're after as refurbished, though, then it would be like throwing $120 away to turn down the refurbished unit.

You are indeed correct on the spec machine as noted in my comment, with so many here and the YT reviewers along with storage space constrains and speed, why would anyone even consider the entry storage model let along a refurb of it? Backup a base 128GB storage iPhone 13/14 and soon enough you usable storage on the 256GB M2 MBA model will be drive anxiety. Just to save $40 CAD. 8GB RAM with 512GB storage should be the entry model on any consumer Mac offered for sale.

Off-topic: 128GB should be the base for an entry iPhone and iPad.

I prefer to focus on local storage compared to RAM presently as cloud storage still has issues with speed, reliability and cost while external is inconvenient and an added item to carry or lose.

How long did Apple stick with 4GB RAM before moving to 8GB RAM?

Agreed.

The 8GB standard came in 2017 I believe. I believe 4GB was standard since 2012. So, 5 years.
