Maybe this is the release we've all been waiting for, the one that will finally fix every last remaining bug in iOS 16 ?

Honestly, if iOS 16 is the last supported release of some products, it will leave a bad taste in people's mouth.

Obviously, it’s not that big of a deal, but wouldn’t Apple have a way to mask the OS version whilst running unreleased software?

They apparently just love to troll us. 🤣

That's depressing. But fair enough. I'll keep an eye on iOS 17.

But to your point -- my mother's iPhone 7 Plus just got a brand new battery at the Apple Store. It's on iOS 15.7.x (whatever the x is now). It might get 2 hours of SoT. MAYBE 3. Maybe. It's unbelievable how the updates have sabotaged the battery on that thing.
You are describing what so far is the entire 64-bit spectrum’s full update lifespan. One battery life obliteration after another. iPads aren’t safe, either. A shame.

Can I hear what the build number of 16.6 that was recorded in these logs was? Or was that not reported?

Speaking of trolling, I think it's possible that this was due to someone on a jailbroken device editing their SystemVersion.plist file to say 16.6.

I think I've hit maybe one new bug since iOS 16 shipped.

I don't consider that good, though. They didn't fix enough since 15.

Still, I don't think I'm worse off now than I was on 15.
What about battery life for you compared to 15?

I’ve held off on updating to iOS 16 all this time, waiting for people to say it’s finally “fixed.”

Is it still a mess? At this rate, my plans are to skip it altogether. MAYBE I’ll do iOS 17 if it turns out to be a Snow Leopard-esque release.
I'm still bitter over the lock screen changes. I want my default wallpapers back.

Your mileage may vary. Problem is, you can't try it out. Once you upgrade you can't go back.

On my iPhone 12 Pro Max battery life improved after upgrading to iOS 16. When I upgraded to an iPhone 14 Pro, battery life was way worse than on my 12 Pro Max. So a new phone, same iOS version, was significantly worse. With recent iOS updates my 14 Pro has gotten good battery life. My wife's 14 Pro has always had good battery life. Both of my children have 12 Pro's and both have good battery life. Many other people though complain about battery life decreasing to varying degrees when upgrading to iOS 16. What will happen in your case? Nobody can predict.

Can’t be, they usually have iOS being in beta cycle, or providing an update to the next iOS 17 gets released. Even after that you could see the occasional update.

Makes you wonder whether any engineers are working on iOS 17 with all these iOS 16 updates.

I feel like every year these incremental updates extend longer into the year.

You’ll note that Apple must have been concerned that both iOS 15 and iOS 16 have seen the need to maintain beta cycles and security updates for a lot longer time. Possibly that is also related to possible App Store changes per EU besides security. It kinda reminds me of keeping Safari more current, while they provide the same for Ventura and also the previous two Big Sur and Monterey. So this year has been a lot more active. Possibly this also has something to do with some of the changes iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 tackle. A lot of this is tested internally so no worries that Apple doesn’t have even more staff working everything in parallel.

I doubt they finished testing 16.5 now already working on 16.6 this is the key reason why these updates are filled with bugs.

Each year recently it’s been something time consuming to get it to work. First you had universal control, later stage manager, lately it’s been HomeKit related issues. Yes I know the first two were not involving iOS. But just examples of what takes considerable time to investigate and resolve problem. iOS 17 will have a lot more going on, one can’t help thinking about how this year will work out.

I use iOS 16.3 which is 2nd best in benchmark performed in this channel to see whether it’s worthy for update or better stay.
