Apple Obsoletes Select Early 2008 to Late 2009 Macs

Thank goodness!
Just had my 09 iMac 27" replaced the display card once, logic board twice, and the display once at Apple early this month!!
(Although I had to drag her into the store 3 times...at least it is still running like a champ and it was still way cheaper than getting the new one)

Reading this thread on a late 2008 MacBook (that's right, no pro) with 8 GB of RAM running El Capitan as my late 2009 27" i7 iMac with 12 GB or RAM (also El Capitan) keeps on chugging on the other room. Unless you're doing heavy video work, animation, or gaming that iMac is a trooper. Still works well for my wife doing graphic design. All of these computers are powerful enough to keep up with just about any media consumption / web browsing (I chalk it up to the mobile emphasis). There just hasn't been a need to keep upgrading unless you're actually a serious creator. Long live the vintage Macs!
12 GB of ram can mess with some of those machines. I've seen software not work as intended because of it.!I'd upgrade to a power of 2!

With the 802.11n Time Capsule being obsoleted but not the 802.11n Airport Express I wonder if that means the Xpress is going to be EOLed soon and pushed off the product list entirely. It was way overdue for an update a year ago.

Way too premature as always. This is the main reason I no longer buy Apple's devices.

Maybe. But if you are happy using a 5-6 year old computer then you aren't really interested in having the latest and greatest anyway, so no real harm. For those who do like access to the most up-to-date features they upgrade every 2-3 years so this never affects them either.

The fortunate thing about owning a Mac is they have amazing resale value so it's fairly affordable to update every couple years vs. a PC which is all but worthless the day you take it home so you just keep it until it dies. This is what I do. I consider it self-financed leasing, rather than buying. I don't necessarily need a new computer but I get a new warranty and all the newest bells and whistles for 3-4 hundred bucks + my old machine.

It's irritating that Apple calls "Obsolete" computers that aren't. They should support them longer than 5 years. (Yes, I know that those from 5-7 years are just "Vintage" but the effect is the same.) Technology is advancing slowly these days and there are top end Macs that are "Obsolete" but are faster than the entry systems of today.

I agree...
I have to admit- I feel a bit insulted reading that my iMac (late 2009) is now "obsolete". What horse manure!!!
It cost me $2400. It has a beautiful 2k 27" screen that has been recently calibrated & is flawless... it has 8gb of RAM, which I believe is still considered a reasonable amount on a consumer machine, it has a quad-core processor & upgraded discrete graphics card, which I believe puts its graphics only scarcely behind current integrated graphics.
Due to never having a virus or anything, and doing a nice clean install every few new OS versions... this machine runs as clean as the day I bought it!
I plan to eventually replace it with a 5k model, but I'd say that day is still 3-5 years away!
My machine is FAR from obsolete. The only modern amenities its lacking is thunderbolt & USB 3.0.
Not a big deal... the only thing that gets plugged in is my iOS devices.

Hmmmm problem is my 27" iMac i7, with SSD and target mode, still does not have an equal or better offering in the IMac line up. The top of the range has even lost the ability to support any form of target mode.

Think I'll be keeping my obsolete 2009 for a few more years....

Interesting that my late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro is still 'supported'. Bet it won't last long

EDIT
Nevermind, obsolete on the linked URL at Apple. Christmas ruined!! :D

Go buy another MacBook Pro... Christmas SAVED! Pocket book a tad smaller though. ;-)

which top end obsolete macs are faster?

why aren't you understanding? when they say obsolete they don't mean it no longer functions, they mean they won't support it any longer. not difficult stuff.

Where did you get your replacement display card? Mine needs a replacement soon, but I can't find one anywhere. I have been waiting for a damaged iMac to gut to become available, but none of them have had the upgraded card.

What are you not understanding? When the OP says it's not obsolete they mean it's as capable as newer models and sees no justification for support to end.

I brought it to the local Apple store (The brick and mortar type) after my display went haywire.
But I don't think or remember I have upgraded display card (It had been too long since I bought her from 2009). It has the ATI Radeon HD 4850.

You pose a reasonable question.
Is it one of semantics or psychology? Hmmm...
I postulate that there is a particular emotional response attached to words, according to the connotation associated with them.
For example: if you had a child whose learning was stunted, though technically accurate, you'd balk at the term "retardation" when describing their cognitive issues.
Similarly, the term "obsolete" conjures negative imagery & is synonymous with the word "junk".
So, while logically I get that this doesn't somehow render my amazing iMac (still the nicest machine owned out of every single person I know & every business setting I've worked in for the last 6 years) useless and mean that I should trash it... however, emotionally, I guess I still balk at it being officially deemed "obsolete".
Does that make sense?

A lot of the reason for it going obsolete also has to do with them not being able to source parts that it was originally made with too.

Still a proud owner of the late 2009 21" iMac. Been running all iOs's since perfectly. Also Windows 10 is great on it.
Only thing coming to an end is the hard drive, going a bit too clunky for my liking. But a resolution for 2016 is to dig into it and replace the HDD and DVD drive for a pair of SSD's. Also try and bump the memory from 8 to 16GB

Give it a new lease of life, whether it will be obsolete, vintage or decrepid :)

My Late 2009 Mac Mini isnt on that list....guess it's still not "obsolete" yet :)

It still works, but it's getting pretty slow.

Still running my Late 2008 15" MBP. It has been around the World countless times, been dinged, knocked, you name it! The left speaker is a little weak nowadays due to a small coffee spill 5 years ago (Watching the one splash that got onto the Mac disappear through the holes over the speaker was a horrible moment!). But it's good - no pixel failures, the "E" key is a little worn & the rest shiny but no biggy!
As a Christmas present to my faithful friend, I updated it from a Crucial M4 to a Crucial MX 200 SSD. Lovely! Running El Capitan like it was born to!!

Probably. I tried to take a mid 2009 MBP for battery replacement about three weeks ago, but they told me they no longer have the batteries for it. They suggested I go to a third party.

I thought it was strange, because I'm pretty sure the current non retina MBP uses the same battery.

I had a hard time finding a good source of battery for my old macbook and finally gave up and bought an imac instead, its a shame the third party batteries are so inconsistent with quality.

I got myself a 2015 rMBP 13" during the summer and I see it easily serving as my main machine for 5-7 years.

Waiting for the hand of death to reach out and take my 2011 Mini, which is still working like a champ since I dropped an SSD into a few years ago. I'd replace it right now, but with 4K monitors dropping in price, I really want a standalone Mac that will drive 4K smoothly -- and there are no real options besides a Mac Pro...
Wait for the Skylake Mac mini. It should suppport 3x4K displays.
