Am I the only one who thinks that £3,499.00 ($5,700) is absurdly out of any reasonable logic to justify this price level?

This is not simply "very expensive"... it's just unjustifiable!

What is the airport extreme like tower next to the display? Mac Mini re-design perhaps?
I don't know, but I was thinking about just that a few weeks back. If you look at the footprints of the Minis, the Apple TVs and the late AEBS/Time Capsule, they all seem to follow.

I would not at all be surprised if a revamped Mac Mini looked very much like the latest AEBS/TC...

They were $35,000 last year. Professional monitors have been $3,000+ for ever. NEC, EIZO, Barco regularly have models with that price. Apple's Cinema displays, HP Dream color, Samsung Blu just to name a few models from various vendors.

If you think it's too expensive, great, wait for it to come down if you want it. These companies aren't stupid, it's priced for a market that wants it and will pay for it.

Ultra HD, also known as Quad HD isn't called 4K any more precisely because it's NOT 4K.

No matter how many times you try multiplying 1024 (or 1000) by 4, you won't get 3840!

This isn't a 4K display because it doesn't have at least 4000 pixels across the screen. End of story.

Try google mate, even Wikipedia and it will shed some light .

I completely agree. This price is simply unjustifiable for most consumers, and anyone even remotely trying to justify its price lacks any sort of common sense. I don't see any regular consumer buying this right now, unless perhaps their name is bill gates ;).

Take the same monitor and slap an Apple logo on it, and suddenly lines form out the door and every previous reason NOT to buy it is forgotten. :)

Hmm. Maybe apple should start selling apple branded $5000 garbage cans. Imagine the margins on those. They could offer us 16, 32 and 64 litre versions. The iRecycle. :D. The second gen. could feature different colors perhaps.

Thus ends the long, cold FullHD winter. At last I can get better resolution than I did in the 90's with CRTs.

It's UHD not 4K cinema. It's a way for Apple to help capitalize Sharp while they try to get production up on the displays. Sharp has had a firm "in" with Apple on advanced displays for 3 years now but have not been able to ramp production. I suspect since this is a pattern, the only way we will ever see Sharp designed IGZO displays is if some Chinese manufacturer actually makes them.

Oh no, not Samsung!

While there have been delays in content agreements, the real delay to Apple TV (with TV) is Sharp.

Rocketman

And this, ladies and germs, is why Apple will not make a television.

We'll have to wait and see if Sharp offers it anywhere else for lower prices. This may not just be an example of an "Apple tax". In general, I don't see Apple raising the price of products not made by them on their store, so this may be Sharp's doing.

As I posted earlier (with link) that exact model is available on Amazon right now for $3210.10 and, based on a customer review, has been so since at least June.

Great for porn movie houses to edit out the HD pimples, acne, and other untoward sights. :p

MSRP of $4795. Not bad off, Amazon's 33% off sale notwithstanding.

Good find, though.

Is that the new Mac mini?

In one of the images of the 32-inch Sharp display there is a little white box. At first I thought it was an Airport, but now I am not sure. Is that the new Mac mini?

I hope it's the new, resesigned Mac Mini which configurable to be on par with high end iMac. Desktop CPU, expandable RAM, PCIe SSD + traditional HDD and most importantly highest end of discreet graphic.

But as for the picture, I think that's an Airport Extreme :D. Most likely provided as scale reference.

Not buying my Mac Pro until Apple shows us what they have planned.

I'm hoping for 28"-30" 4k display from Apple @ $1000 - $1200. The current thunderbolt displays are extremely overpriced until they are updated with the new iMac design.

You're really dreaming. You're expecting a 4k display at or near $1K?

 needs to release its own 4K display (with or without a Sharp inside). With a really well design stand, arm options. With a sh*load of TB ports and back connections. The darth vader trash can needs its matching 4K displays. :D
