Those are speakers with no audio source, so the price comparison doesn't work.

Also, there is no way my wife would put up with those things in our living room.

This is not a fair comparison at all because you haven’t put any opportunity costs into your calculation.
How long did it take you to build and modify those speakers?
I can imagine they sound nice and since I work in a studio I’ve seen many speakers with funny designs and outstanding sound but to be honest those look like an ikea lamp from the 90ies..

I rang Apple yesterday and the Apple support representative that I spoke to contacted their after sales team to confirm that the promotion was real and discovered that it was in fact real but that only random Apple Music Subscribers were being sent the email / promotion.

Given the amount of money we spend on Apple products and services, we are extremely disappointed to have been passed up / looked over for this particular offer and would have very much appreciated said promotional discount towards a new HomePod.

I was hoping that, after calling in, they might extend the offer to us. Sadly however, that is not the case.

FANBOY ALERT! I have personally used this product and it sucks! Yep. I said it. The first Apple product I've found that sucks. The DEAL KILLER HERE is sound quality. The Sonos One with Alexa sounds SO MUCH BETTER, and can be had for much less, I've seen them on open box at Best Buy for $150, but even at $199 they are a STEAL. And plus Sonos supports EVERYTHING - Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Google Music, Amazon Music, heck it even supports iTunes match, and you can airplay your iTunes library to Sonos. It's so fluid in the way it works too, Alexa play my Christmas playlist on apple music, Alexa play Christmas music on Amazon Music, Alexa play Rob's Christmas favorites on Spotify... It just works.

Plus I get to order my Starbucks, play Jeopardy, and order stuff on Amazon right from my Sonos speaker. :)

This is just not true. You either haven’t actually heard one or something is wrong with your ability to hear.
I do see that the lack of additional audio I/O or Spotify not being supported could be good reasons for criticism, but the sound? I doubt it..

I've just recently sold my last HomePod (I had two, but my circumstances have changed, unfortunately) and the biggest limitation was always Siri.

Otherwise I was always happy with the sound quality, being able to control my Hue lights etc but I picked up a Google Home Mini in the recent Black Friday sales.

Granted, at higher volumes, there is a loss of detail in the sound, and I know I've sold my soul to the Devil because, you know, it's Google, but at least I can play my music back using Bluetooth.... something the HomePod has, but for whatever reason, isn't enabled after the initial set up.

Because Apple doesn't get paid if you use Bluetooth

They don't get paid when I use AirPlay...

You need to pay for Apple Music or buy an Apple device to use AirPlay

Imagine if HomePod just let you Bluetooth in from just any device whether it was made by Apple or not. You'd literally be stealing money from Tim's pocket every time you played a song.

Of course you'd still need an Apple device to do this, namely a HomePod. I have a feeling Tim Cook would be happy with everyone stealing from him by buying HomePods.

P.S. You can also AirPlay from iTunes on Windows, playing songs you ripped from CDs, pirated, or bought from another source. Tim Cook doesn't receive a dime for those.

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with an optical drive that I use to play CDs in iTunes and send it to HomePod using Airplay. I can also select my Apple TV in the bedroom and the speakers connected to the Mac and everything winds up in sync, unlike bluetooth.

Bluetooth doesn't have a 2 second lag in the first place.

So Apple uses arbitrary restrictions to force you to install and use their software (and agree to the software license allowing them to track your listening habits).

Then don't buy it man.... Cripes... How many people want a HomePod that don't already have an iPhone? Heck, you need an iPhone to set it up! You're trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. Every argument you have come up with has been wrong so now you're trying to spout off about them requiring you to install software... much like Sonos does as well...

AirPlay's buffer allows audio (and video) to stay in sync across multiple output sources around my house. It's actually an advantage.

Bluetooth allows my non-Apple Blu-ray player to stay in sync with my non-Apple speaker system.

Same speaker also has multiple physical inputs (imagine like an Apple dongle, but built in at no extra cost) so it can also receive audio from my non-Apple TV.

Has the benefit of no 2 second input lag for user interfaces.

How many people want a HomePod

Not many

Ahh, cherrypicked a specific portion of a single sentence and didn't respond to any of the rest. It's gotta be weird hating a product that you don't even own...

I'm using AirPlay to stream audio throughout my entire house. Your solution sounds relatively primitive to be honest.

Don’t you know? Some haters just can’t sleep at night if the product they don’t like isn’t seen as failing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I received a notification yesterday evening from Apple with a link to the offer.
