Oh Big Sur...first it killed 2013 and 2014 machines, now it’s finishing with the 2016 and 2017 models :p
Somehow the 2015 model escaped the fate, maybe it has some friends inside Apple
I think the Big Sur update just wasn't completely baked....maybe COVID-19 and WFH had something to do with it?

I don't consider this promptly addressed as the day the update is released the issue caused me to go buy a new charger. Only then could I boot the unit, update it, and now the old charger works without issue!
Apple can't address it without an update to the pubic. And that update doesn't usually happen overnight. What more do you expect Apple to do? I get that it inconvenienced a lot of people in more ways than one but, I think Apple handled this in a reasonable time frame.

Use the extra charger for backup or sell on eBay.

The issues for the 2016-2017 keep piling on, not that I don't appreciate Apple's support programs.

  • Flexgate
  • Staingate
  • Butterfly keyboard
  • SSD failure (non-Touch Bar models)

Now battery failure.

SSD failure is new to me, how prevalent is it?

A year ago I had to pay $375 to Apple to get this issue fixed. When do I get my $ back?
Apple probably answer with either “ February 30th “ or “ sorry, we don’t speak English “😆 sorry for the lame jokes.

Haha, my MBP is the late 2015 and so far I have no issue with Big Sur. Run smoothly just like Catalina before it.

And I did clean install, if that makes any difference. I always upgrade macOS every February with clean install 😉

Seriously bring it up with support. It's been a while but did something similar with by iBook and they gave me credit.

Could be the fact that in the US class action lawsuits would be filed if they did not take care of their design and manufacturing failures.
Except they have always taken care of issues like this. Even when it was NVidia's fault they took care of it.

So glad I haven’t updated to Big Sir yet.
This problem can also happen in Catalina, which is why there's a supplemental update for 10.15.7 that also addresses the battery problem.

I have Macbook 2016 and it shows "Service Recommended" but I can charge it 100%. Do you think I qualify for the free battery?

do they also replace the butterfly keyboard if i opt this replacement program ?
I don't think this is what you mean, but ironically, yes, you will get a keyboard replacement by getting this repair. On these models the battery is glued to the top case, which also houses the keyboard. You therefore will end up with a keyboard replacement. It's the same keyboard you currently have, although possibly a newer production run, which may or may not make any difference.

Same! I just got off the phone with Apple. They said to check back in 2-4 weeks; they don't have a system set up YET to handle people who have already replaced the battery because this program is just rolling out. But they seemed fairly optimistic that it would get resolved eventually.
I had a similar issue with an iPhone a while back where I paid to replace the battery and then they offered free battery replacement. Apple refunded me, sent me a check in the mail since I no longer had the credit card.
