A year ago I had to pay $375 to Apple to get this issue fixed. When do I get my $ back?
Ya, so did I. I called Apple and the rep said that users who'd already paid would not be reimbursed. I was sorta WTH? Pushed it a bit, will see what transpires.

I read this too late. Can I revert from 11.2.1 to 11.2 and wait for this issue to happen? The left speaker is busted a few months after the keyboard repair. Apple Service Point wants 860€ for the speaker repair 😂 so waiting for this error and have the busted speaker fixed as side effect would have been a great strategy.

All this makes me very sad 🥺

Good on Apple for promptly addressing the problem.

It's just lip service so far so Apple hasn't addressed anything. There's still unnecessary down time for end users if they rely on untethered mobility. It's also still up in the air how long the turn around time will be for repair and if a loaner will be provided. Even after it's been repaired Apple is still liable for compensating end users' loss of income/business or hardship because they tinkered with people's working battery firmware/BMS and created unnecessary downtime.

So if there's a software fix for the 1% battery issue, does that imply if I haven't updated yet there's some way I can trigger the fault via software?

I've had the "Battery Service recommended" thing showing for a year now but I haven't bothered taking it in since it's always near power anyway and I don't feel like shelling out hundreds of dollars, but if I could get it replaced for free I'd jump on that

I was charged £670 two weeks ago for an out of warranty repair on my 15" 2017 MBP that just suddenly stopped charging, it wouldn't even power from the charging cable either so I wonder if that's covered under this.

Best customer service? I would imagine making a battery that lasted more than 3-4 years to be a higher priority
Not to take away from those having a battery issue with their 2016-2017 MacBook Pro computers, my (2) 2015 MacBook Pro computers still have their original batteries that still function well. That is 6 years on the original batteries which I think is pretty good.

Just got off the chat, and they are replacing my battery, late 2016 model.

I have a Mac Pro 2016 - Touch bar, still in the 5 year window. My battery cycle count was 45! i had 100% charge. Then i upgraded to Big Sur. I only use it off mains power now and again. I noticed a few weeks later that the battery was having issues. I googled it and then noticed this message. Got in touch with Apple and they have point blank denied it as its a Touch bar and not on the recall list. I raised it with the manager and she spoke to an engineer. They said it was not on the list for the fix. My only option is to get the battery services at cost!

This is obviously the same issue as the non-touch. Same issue in the exact same way, same MO. So now i either get the battery fixed. Which they can brick again at will or wait until they add the model number to the recall list.

Apple suggesting WRITING to there complaints department. They gave me an address! No email. Who writes letters in 2021? I suppose its a good way of shutting down the complaints. Its my first bad experience with Apple support.

weird, I seem in the same boat.

I didn't think there was a 15 inch without a touch bar so surely that cant be right.

Mine is MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) with a touch bar and 16GB. Got it to do music on, so now can't do anything unless its plugged in!

I have sent an email to tcook@apple.com out of frustration with this issue. Unlikely to get a response but you never know.

The update made no difference :( but did at least prove that there is an issue with the battery.

Nvidia is one example where it was another company's fault. All the rest are Apple's fault. Good example is the butterfly keyboard.
The iBooks were released with a series of Seagate drives that had a high percentage of failure. Since I needed more storage I already replaced the drive. A year later I took in the iBook in because Apple was replacing the case. There was a crack on the left side that was occurring do to hinge stress. At pickup, the employee let me know that there was a recall on the drive and even though I replaced it they provided me with the drive and told me I could place it in an enclosure and use it as an external.

Just chatted with Apple earlier today over that article for my 2017 MBP 13" Non-touch bar. Repair is setup...we will see if they fix it

After about a week at the repair depot, it appears they just fixed it and shipping the laptop back to me!
Thanks MacRumors for the heads up about this service bulletin..I was about to pay for a new battery!

Still no news on free battery fix for Mac books with a touch bar. Anyone had any jot getting this fixed. I am really disappointed in this error.

I'm running my MacBook Pro 2017 15" on Catalina. Suddenly, i could not see the internet, despite being able to access my home's wifi. Also, I could not access the internet via my iPhone's hot spot. I tried to establish a new network too and that did not work. I tried a USB connection using my iPhone 11 pro Max connected to the MacBook. None worked, so I contacted, eventually i spoke to them on the phone.

After some checks, I was told to reset the Nvram which I did ... then after rebooting, I got a message to remove the USB device as my battery could not sustain the output. The USB device was my fully charged iPhone 11 Pro Max which I had connected to the Mac, as I had tried to get onto the internet via a USB connection. The MacBook Pro 2017 15" was plugged in. I felt the charger, it was mildly warm, probably a 7 degrees above the room's ambient temperature.

Then, the support person said we'll reset the SMC controller. The computer would not restart ... then we tried a diagnostic check - it reported a faulty SMC controller and an error code. Then on trying to reboot, the MacBook would not reboot. It had a back screen with a white revolving icon in its centre.

i was told the SMC chip appeared to have failed - a hardware failure.

i took it to an Applestore Genius bar and the chap restarted the computer, and got it onto the store's wifi. He said the battery was only on 1%. He said it had 700 cycles - but he did not show me that cycle count. He said it's best to get a new battery. And that they'd replace the keyboard as well (which had lost a graphic and sometimes double lettered or missed a letter). And I signed for $Au260. bout $US 200. A new battery costs $Au189 ($US147). Those costs include 10% Goods and services tax.

i was relieved the motherboard was OK ... I felt OK about a new battery and keyboard.

Then ... driving away, I recalled about the battery issue, that i thought my MacBook was included ...

i then called Apple, and eventually, i have threatened them with consumer affairs.

They have said my particular MacBook Pro 15" 2017 (I think its an August revision) is not included ... It's now fixed, and I am waiting. I am getting angry with their tactics. Which is to waste one's time, and then, when after 43 minutes i said to the person that clearly they had no authority, and that I would now take legal action, they said please hold ... and i spoke to a smart ass in Singapore who told me my computer wasn't covered.

I said that two days ago, my battery was sufficient for my needs, and that it failed while following Apple's Nvram restart ... and that i was not told by the service personnel, about any issues with Apple keyboard or batteries.

Their attitude is frustrating and not genuine. They have fixed the notebook too ... but i am sufficiently annoyed at their attitude, I may leave the computer there at the Applestore and take them to our legal redress government authority. I suspect I would win, and if not, it would cost them a lawyer turning up, or more likely someone from a management position, which is probably what most big companies do ... I said too, I was happy to pay something, as my battery was old, but that it was sufficient for my needs, as it had been running just fine whenever I did use it off the charger.
