Is it just these Apple original programmes, or will there be a selection of older/general movies and TV, like Netflix etc do...??

If you haven’t noticed the trend lately..... most streaming companies are going towards original content. This is because leasing content is quite expensive and restrictive

Free? Wow. Just remember if you don't pay for it, youre the product.

I don't think that's an applicable concern, they're bundling this up with a hardware purchase, and just ramping up subscribers numbers.

Yeah, I would think they'd focus on original content (vs. a catalog of other provider content), but it makes a very different experience. Maybe CBS will give up on their service and make their Trek content available through ATV+ :D

Fine print says this is a one-time offer, per iCloud account...for those asking.

Um where do you see that fine print? The one I found on Apple TV+'s page only says this under the 1 year free service:

$4.99/month after free trial. One subscription per Family Sharing group. Offer good for 3 months after eligible device activation, starting November 1, 2019. Plan automatically renews until cancelled. Restrictions and other terms apply.

I’m annoyed. I bought an Apple TV 4K box off eBay about 3 weeks ago. I don’t need or want an iPod touch, a new Mac or an iPad. I’ve only just had my iPhone X over a year, so don’t really need a new one either. I’m looking at upgrading my watch, but that’s not included in the offer. What do I do? :(

Disney+ gets my money this year. I know the free subscriptions are for devices that can play AppleTV+, but if people are forking over a lot of money for the new watches, you think they could throw them (possibly me) a bone.

I’ll get Disney+ for the catalogue but AppleTV+ for the new series. See, For All Mankind, Amazing Stories and Foundation look like series I can get into, some of them likely for multiple seasons.

Netflix is getting the short end of the stick. I’ve already cancelled that subscription but will activate it for Stranger Things and Black Mirror seasons, before cancelling again for a year.

Amazon Prime already gets my money for the store benefits and tv and music are just nice bonus freebies.

I guess the real short end of the stick is cable. I’ve long ago cancelled my cable TV. I was a real pioneer in the cord cutting concept, having cancelled back in 2007 with the very first AppleTV which only worked with purchased movies and TV shows and video podcasts which made up most of my TV diet until Netflix came around.

I reactivated my cable tv when they gave me a deal I couldn’t refuse: $5/mo for all broadcast channels and access to Crave which streams many Hulu and HBO shows.

Even if I kept everything, from $100/mo that I was paying for cable in 2007 to $35 for TV+, Disney+, Netflix, AmazonPrime, live TV and Crave, what a deal.

I bet at least one person won’t think this through and they’ll buy an iPad or something with the main motivation of getting that free year of Apple TV+. The ipad will sit on a shelf and they’ll have paid $400 to save $60.

I’m a little confused... if I buy an Apple TV 4K from a non-Apple store today, will I get the 1 year free Apple TV+ ?

There's something like 1.4 billion active Apple devices in the world. Let's say that amounts to 700 million Apple customers (discounting corporate and duplicate devices). If they can get 20% of them to sign up at $60 per year that's $8.4B in revenue, probably about what it's going to cost them for the next few years (each year) to produce the content (supposedly they spent ~$5B leading up to launch, but Netflix is spending >$10B next year and I expect Apple's spend must ramp up). I doubt they're going to make a ton of money on this service (by Apple's standards), it seems like more of an ecosystem lock-in/prestige play at this price point.

I guess the question I have is how the 'free' year is redeemed?
If it's some kind of iTunes code; there's the possibility of flogging it on eBay to get a few pennies back.
But if there aren't enough buyers interested; half the 'face value' would be optimistic.

This sounds like as soon as you activate your new device (ATV, iPad, iPhone, Mac, etc) the timer starts for 3 months.
During the first 3 months after activation you have the option to turn on ATV+ service ?
Will it automatically bill the iTunes or App Store account credit card once the year is over ?

I would expect them to bill your credit card once the year it’s over. It’s probably up to you to remember to cancel after a year. That’s how a lot of companies also make money off subscriptions. Some people are too lazy to proactively cancel.

Just to be clear - there's no Apple TV App on Macs yet. But it's supposedly coming with Catalina. Also still no word of Catalina will follow through on threat to ban 32-bit apps. Maybe people with betas can comment?

Pay the $5 if you want it...

Appears so :-

  • Customers who purchase any new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch starting September 10 can enjoy one year of Apple TV+ for free. Beginning November 1, customers can initiate the one-year free offer in the Apple TV app on the device running the latest software. Customers have three months after device activation to claim the offer, or if the device was purchased and activated before the launch of Apple TV+, they will have three months starting November 1. The subscription will automatically renew at $4.99 per month after one year. Customers can cancel at any time in Settings at least one day before each renewal date. Customers who cancel during the offer period will forfeit the remainder of their offer. This limited time offer applies to both new and refurbished models, including devices from the iPhone Upgrade Program, is not restricted to any specific sales channel (e.g., Apple Store, resellers) and will be available in all countries where Apple TV+ will launch. Up to six family members can share one Apple TV+ subscription and watch using their own Apple ID and password. Only one one-year offer is available per family, regardless of the number of devices purchased.

I called up to speak to someone today to check if my Mac which was delivered on Monday would be eligible.

I was told that devices that were delivered on the 10th would be eligible, but my Mac which arrived the day before would not be.

have you switched it on. Activated against your Apple ID before the 10th then I guess you wouldn’t be eligible.

Is this one year free service cumulative if you buy multiple devices? Getting a new phone and an  TV so I’m expecting 2 years of Plus.

Each device gets its own year of service, but you have to activate it within 3 months of purchase. So, if you buy two both devices at the same time, you can activate one immediately, then activate the other three months later; thus getting 12+3=15 months of service.

Return it.

No. One time offer per Apple ID.
