A made for tv original movie is a far cray from Hollywood studio blockbusters. I don't see real movies coming to iTunes for a while, and especially not at $1.99.

I can vouch for this. 1080p h.264 and 1080i mpeg2 plays great and looks great too on my HDTV. My TV is 720p, so Quicktime and Front Row are only running at 720p. Also, the surround sound sounds great from the optical out.

Rosetta almost handles 720p material from eyeTV.

Random thoughts from my experience... For those saying that the full blown DVR media center thing from Apple isn't here, you're right. BUT with eyeTV, AVC Cap and Media Central, you have got a really cool solution. You can get eyeTV 500 refurb for $200 (for OTA HD and some Clear QAM cable), Media Central is free as is the AVC Cap to record from some cable boxes. The slow and small HDD on the mini is no big deal, you really don't want your media recording to your main drive anyway. Also, TiVos only use 5400 RPM drives and for SD material 120GB (105GB after system install) gives you quite a bit of recording space. My Motorola HD DVR from Comcast only has a 120GB HDD. I have 2 (soon to be 3) newertech mini stacks working with my Mini. Those can hold up to 500GB each.

Also, the Dual Core Mini is poised to handle whatever downlaodable media you can throw at it. Don't forget that these processors, HDD's and optical drives can all be upgraded as time goes on.

Media Central also has a Trailer download service that gives you HD (small, medium and large) and they also look great. The download takes a while though.

Color me impressed and really happy with my new Mini.

edit:added thoughts

Okay sorry, perhaps 2 Ghz was an overstatement (just regurgitating Apple's recommendation). But the point is, that's still a computer model that is less than a month old....1.66 Ghz Intel Core Duo, with only 512 MB of RAM. The MAJORITY of Mac owners are still left out in the cold if Apple tries to push HD too soon. From a product marketing perspective, 480p is sufficient for the present time.

I wish I cared about this...even a little bit™...but I don't.

I agree iGary... As platform stated right after your post "Bump to 720p and raise the price a bit and then i'll buy"

anything below 720p res and i could care less... why would i want to buy something formatted in widescreen with such low resolution that it is painful to watch on a widescreen??? have any of you really tried to watch an itunes video on your 17 or 20" imacs @ full screen? OMG! HIDEOUS! I cant imagine trying to watch it on my big screen:( Give me HD content and i will buy in 2 seconds...) give me low res content and i buy nutzing!

I find it comforting (sounds rediculous?) to know, however, that anyone buying a Core Duo based Mac and beyond will be ready for HD whenever it hits. Core Solo Minis can also be upgraded, we will see about the "MacBooks." Very cool in my opinion.

They've got the technology all there right now and it's all running right now. I believe they are just waiting to 1) make decent deals with movie companies 2) scale up their streaming facilities (did you notice they just bought a HUGE, VAST new data center?) and 3) the release of new "real" video products. It won't be long now.

They may have all the technology/systems in place but this depends on the ability of users to get access in real-time to the content. I'm not sure that there are enough users out there that can wait 2 hours to download a movie...i could get to the store and back with the DVD. Although at $1.99 i might be willing to wait.[/QUOTE]

um no they said *streaming* content - this means you don't have to wait for it to download, you just watch it over your internet connection in real time.

the quality of the video would therefore depend on the speed of your connection... film trailers can look alright on my 20" iMac G5 with front row on my 2Mbps connection, but often the connection can be crappy and so the quality isn't so good... even so, this could well be a good solution, with smaller resolution ipod downloads available (it would be unlikely for a service to launch without *some* kind of iPod integration, since it is really that iPod that's driving iTMS sales. Also, remember FrontRow is currently Mac only, meaning the service is unlikely to be provided exclusively through front row... adding streaming as a bonus you got through FrontRow could provide an incentive for people to buy Macs... the only this with FrontRow streaming of *bought* movies would be that the bandwidth any one person might use is unlimited, from repeat watching, whereas the amount they pay for the download is fixed).

By the way, the iTMS now has a category for "Short Films" (formerly Movies, I believe). Could this pave the way for a "Videos" or a real "Movies" section?

Short Films has been on there for a while.
ya a long while.

anyways, it seems to be a mistake, so then it appears that apple may be ready to release more when the time comes. it being a mistake, however, may mean that it might not actually be $2.

Sounds cool, we are finally getting proper movie content on iTunes.

The only problem I can see is that other countries beside the US getting the content because there are few countries out there that have the iTunes store with the music video but no TV content.

So does this mean we might be seeing Movies on the iTunes Australia?

We can live in hope

I wouldn't mind paying $2 for a scaled down movie (as in it would be unwatchable to watch on a larger television but great on an iPod), without any extras on it....Now let's just see if Apple feels the same way:cool:

I'm pretty bummed that I didn't buy it while it was available. I was about to buy it, but waited because our wireless connection on campus is very flakey. Too bad. It would've been fun to say that I bought the first full length film on iTunes, even if it was a made for TV movie.

Its still hard as what to find the actual movie, I had to get the direct link to find it and still have no idea where it actually is in the store. Hopefully since this is just their little test they will be easier to find in the future.

So, if anybody has downloaded this thing, about how long does it take? (Y'know, just to get a sense of what may be coming up)

Well, it looks like Apple had a change of heart. The price was raised by 8 bucks!

Not too surprising, iTunes is pretty full of content and price glitches. I recently bought a 21 song album for 3.96 euros.

yeah, just wanted to point out it's 9.99 now. i think i remember the same thing with will farrell's snl stuff. it was 1.99 for a while (i didn't attempt to download it at that price though) and then it shot up to 9.99.

Hm.

$10 for a movie from ITMS
or
$12 for a movie from Best Buy.
That is significantly better quality.
And has deleted scenes, commentary, etc.
And has subtitles.
And plays on my TV easier.
And I can rip it.
And I can put it on my iPod.

So, for 83% of the price, I get to...
Wait, what do I get?

$12 for a movie from Best Buy.

As you point out, DVDs are still a pretty good deal as long as they're priced reasonably. That will always be the case; collectors like having permanent copies with extra features, liner notes, etc.

But even worse for iTMS, their $10 movie has to compete with nearly free* Bit-torrent, which typically also gives you better selection, a higher-quality HDTV video, and no digital restrictions management.

* Despite its low cost in dollars, peer-to-peer requires more time and trouble from the user and a higher level of computer expertise, which is why a properly priced iTMS download would still win out.
