Oh of course. It’s not for everyone. But I’m referring more to comments like “I wouldn’t take it if it were free” “it’s junk” etc. I can guarantee those people have never used it.
Of course they haven't used it. Do you regularly buy things that don't fit into your lifestyle? That would be pure stupidity. Seriously, what a dumb thing to say.

I already had speakers throughout the house. I was only interested in a home assistant device so went with...15 or so Amazon Dots.

Apple missed the market terribly with the HomePod.

As a former employee that could get you fired. It's available for the "Friends & Family" discount from what I've read.

1. They would never use their personal discount for a random
2. If they did and someone found out they would be fired.

If you think one sounds good, a Stereo Pair is on an entirely different level. It's just a shame Apple has borked using them as speakers for the Apple TV since iOS/tvOS 12.
