Pathetic.

Apple might as well have just spat in our faces. The so called 'update' is a complete piss take. I was concerned when they reffered to the macbookpro as the new 'flagship' but this is laughable.

Sickening. Im going to have to seriously consider switching to a HP workstation and abandoning apple.

With the way of the world going to Thunderbolt and USB3, who in their right mind would buy this update unless absolutely necessary? I don't think a machine can be updated to thunderbolt with PCI from what I've heard, so the minute you buy your "new and updated" machine, it's already behind the times. I can't imagine how much it will show it's age in a year or two when thunderbolt is supposed to replace everything. Then to get USB3, you would have to use one your PCI slots just for that. This is a joke.

I'm starting to think that Apple had originally planned to discontinue the Mac Pro but only recently decided to reverse their decision - no doubt due to all the out-cries over the past month. This "update" just stinks of being a rushed job. Literally they just slapped in new processors and called it a day.

please open-source shake

If you're going to exit the Pro Market Apple, please open-source shake so that MAINSTREAM Linux users can use it, not Just Hollywood FX houses.

Get this: Even Autodesk Smoke 2008 for.......IRIX ........is STILL supported. Now THAT'S commitment.

It (IS/soon to be WAS) the high-end Apple market that made most of these wonderful films that they shove through the iTunes store. Talk about a missed opportunity to say that from Hollywood silver screen to your new Retina display, Apple is there all the way.

I'm speaking as an Editing and FX house CEO/CTO.

I just don't GET it! Are professionals not the ones who benefit from thunderbolt the most? How... HOW could you not include this in update Apple?

I feel like I need to email Tim on this one...

I was ready to spend $8000 on this tonight and make a special trip to the US from Europe just to pick it up. Geez, what now?

I know I asked this before, but anyone have suggestions on the easiest way to transfer multiple terabytes of media from Mac-formatted hard drives to a Windows-based operating system? What's better, HP or Dell?

that is what I am going to do!!! The H E L L with Apple... they have disappointed us terribly. it feels as if they have spit on the core group of users that stood behind them for so many years.

I will definitely order the great new Macbook Pro tomorrow. But then that is for moving around, I also need a serious machine in the office. So heading for the new Mac Pro... New? Well, at least "new" as in "new from the shop". No way I will buy a several year old machine which is seriously behind the competition. So most likely an HP Z820. And buy the way, maybe HP also sells some decent laptops...?
Having used Mac since SE does not mean I have problems using a Windows machine. When there is this much hype and no content to match, it is time to leave.

:(

No way.. Just no way Apple is doing this!!
Mac Pro is dead, they don't care anymore:(

The money is in the iDevices and portables. The unprofitable to barely profitable pro market can easily be served by Windows PC builders. Apple needs to focus on what is making them the most money. In a year or two it's quite possible that the iMac will be the only desktop Mac left. Not trying to be negative, but its the Post PC era and Apple is moving away from the pro market.

Apple is not moving away from the Pro market. They are moving away from the workstation market. Most pro's who used to buy the fastest and the top of the line already switched to iMacs. The need for workstations in the pro markets Apple caters for are less and less nowadays.

Now don't get me wrong.

I had 5000$ in my pocket to upgrade my Mac Pro today, and I'm as pissed as anyone else here, but I suppose this is it. I won't be buying these new Mac Pro's. I'll be waiting for a faster iMac I suppose.

Wait, so first Apple goes ahead and releases a technology that is well and truly overkill for the vast majority of consumers and only really appropriate for professionals (who can justify the prices), and then they don't actually include it in the Mac Pro?

Nice going, Apple.

Boxx.. is sweet!.. their computers will smoke these new Mac Pros and then some.

Oh and they're super attentive to their customers.. unlike some companies we know.

Well guys, what did you expect? Apple has been progressively ruining their pro stuff since around when Final Cut X was released, so really I am not shocked at all about this.

With no updates to the iMacs and an alleged update to the Pro, I wonder if Apple is moving away from the desktop? If it does not run on battery, they don't want to sell it.

Thanks for stating what everyone else has stated a million times! lol

I totally understand why many people are upset by this "update", and I don't feel the need to regurgitate this crap about iOS and iPads, etc. It serves no purpose.

Perhaps Apple is still working on some sort of combined mini/Pro. Since the mini was really part of Apple's "switcher" campaign and the iMac is really the small footprint/consumer desktop, maybe Apple will just merge the two lines somehow into a workstation/server combo. There was a rumor about this a while back... so, who knows...

I saw Apple going nowhere with regard to the Pro market with regard to FCX, no updates to Mac Pro and now the death of the 17inch MacBook Pro.

So switched back to Windows with Win7 and Adobe Creative Cloud with CS6.
