I'd love to be in the Apogee or Avid offices today, I'm always a fan of hearing a lot of people swearing loudly. And, before you say that Apple has partnerships with those folks, I've heard from the horse's mouth (i.e., head of tech dev) at both companies, along with Metric Halo and others, that they get no more info on Apple's plans than the consumers do, other than some pittance architectural things that they almost-always (the intel transition was an exception, iirc) get after the fact anyway.

So, to the other pros pissed at this, just think how the devs at the companies that make these products feel!

Speaking of being in people's offices, I bet the folks over at Magma are jumping for joy: http://www.magma.com/thunderbolt.asp

So what editor / compositor / audio engineer is still going to stick around on this sinking ship now? Honestly, the OS isn't worth this much grief.

Pro-users, let's roll out.

Of course... but, it's stable, and some pro apps (Smoke for me)
are only available on mac.... so, how to work without OSX ?

Not ALL but many still need the features ONLY available in a tower configuration.

As far as idiotic... I find your statement comes close. Just because you don't understand the needs of other users doesn't mean they don't exist.

I don't understand the needs of other users? I'm a Mac Pro user, look at my signature maybe? I also realize that we are a very very very very small percentage of the professionals using Mac's nowadays. That's what other "pro"s are not realizing.

I'm not saying that all Pro's can get away with an iMac today, they can't. Many need PCI-e. (I have 3 PCI-e cards in my tower myself) But we are a minority. And that's why Apple can get away with what they just did.

But some idiots are trying to make it into something much bigger than their own headache, claiming that Apple is dumping the professional user base. They are not. The professional user base is dumping Mac Pro is what's going on.

But I still think they could have iterated on the Mac Pro with updated internals and no big design changes forever. I don't understand why they are dumping the line. It can't cost too much to do just that. I really wanted to buy one today, and I'm pissed as hell, but I'm keeping my rationality about the issue.

From what I can tell, those who are most pissed off at Apple are those in the Movie and TV industry. Something tells me, Apple will be getting lots of free publicity in the near future, "Don't by that, it's just a Mac."

Tim Cook said at D10, "And Compaq, if people got angry at Compaq, they would just buy from Dell. And Dell, if they got angry at Dell, they would just buy from IBM. But an Apple customer was a unique breed. And there was this emotion that you just don’t see in technology in general."

Hell hath no fury...

And music for some. A music app I wanted to buy requires at least a Mac Pro with eight i7 cores (16 threads) to run decently, now there's basically no new Mac for me to get to use that App and I won't be buying a 2 year old Xeon.

Wth?!?!?

Late to this show, and wow...... I hadn't expected this.

The rumors of Apple abandoning the Mac Pro were squashed last week which made most of us happy.

But this "update" (is it really an update? Are the CPU's of a new family or not??) is so silly, that I first thought that the store had a misprint:

- A new Mac Pro with a Radeon 5770? LOL.... impossible.
- Let's see... the 5870 as a $ 200 CTO?? LOL again, must be a misprint!!
- Okay... maybe new grfx cards (i.e. 7970) weren't available yet..... USB 3? NO?!?!
- Right.. no USB 3... Thunderbolt then?? HUH?!???? NOT?!?!?!?:eek:

In other words.... come on. What has happened? This simply cannot be serious...! If it were april first....

I'm sure most will agree with this simple "checklist" for updating the Mac Pro line was:
1. Newest Xeons
2. Thunderbolt
3. USB 3
4. Grfx cards

I see 4 x fail.

I was expecting all except USB 3.0 which isn't native on sandy bridge chipsets.

It's the other way round. Perhaps you're not feeling it because you might not need a new Mac Pro for now. But there are people out there who have been waiting for ages having their hopes up that a properly updated Mac Pro will eventually be released. They're dumping the Mac Pro because they simply can't buy outdated hardware that cost the same as an up-to-date PC workstation and they are in dire need of a new computer to work on more sophisticated tasks.

The problem is not the dead of the Macpro !
The problem is it's impossible now to have a powerfull computer to work with....
none macpro 16 core, vs iMac quadcore.....
and lot of expensive stuff only on OSX wich cannot be used on windows !

So...... waste of money !!
Imagine how many post effects house for films which invest millions in hardware.... and nothing after ?
You buy a porshe, and 2 years later, they said to you you won't never be abble to buy new tires !!
Of course, you can buy another car.... but, what to do with your Porshe ?
And nobody except a museum will buy this car as second hand !!

No respectfull at all !!!

I do need a new Mac Pro. I already said I do. And I have been waiting for 2 years to buy one. They are dumping the Mac Pro because it's not selling well. Simple as that. It's not selling well because most of the professionals are using other Macs. That's what many of the people are missing.

Pro users started abandoning Mac Pro long ago. And it has come to a point where only a small minority of Pro users (me included) need it. And that's how Apple can axe it. So don't expect a big uproar to this. Not from the professional user base at least. Mostly from the vendors who produce PCI-e based systems.

No you can't.

I didn't say Apple should dump this line. I'm saying the reason Apple can dump this line is that the so called pro user base of Apple already dumped this line for the most. There's no way Apple could dump the Mac Pro if even 50% of their professional users were using it. Cutting down the content creation would hurt Apple a lot.

But since the big majority of professional content is already created using iMacs, MBP and even Mac Mini's and Airs, Apple is unfortunately doing this. But I'm pissed. They did lose 5k$ of my money today as well.

The reason pro users have not upgraded their computers in years is, Apple has not upgraded their pro computers in years. If Apple had upgraded today, they would have sold out in minutes.

WHY does Mac Pro not have Thunderbolt, Apple? WHY!?

Did they run out of Thunderbolt ports by giving two to each new Macbook Pro?

If ANY computer needs Thunderbolt, it's the Mac Pro! This makes absolutely NO sense! Now, these new Mac Pros can't use the new Thunderbolt displays! They're forcing new buyers to get a 3rd party screen and an adapter!

I don't even want a Mac Pro, it's not my kind of computer. But this just strikes me as a terrible move by apple.

No. Pro users are upgrading their computers a lot. They are buying new iMacs and MBP's. Apple hasn't upgraded the Mac Pro in 2 years because they didn't have anything to update it with until last month.

For every Mac Pro user there's probably a thousand professional users using iMacs.

I think further discussions with you will result in nothing. Your logic is fundamentally flawed. Let me just redirect you to this Facebook page and let the people there speak for themselves.

Because, Apple was too cheep to do a MB redesign.

The only reason Apple didn't put TB on this Mac Pro is to say "we are not going to update this line, get out while you can and if you really need it, buy one today". There's no other explanation.

I had money in my hand, but now I am shocked. No Thunderbolt? Seriously? All I have is a Thunderbolt Monitor, guess it is just me and my Mac Mini.

I already have my "like" on that site. (Was one of the first even) And only 17000. Against millions of iMacs and MBP's. So that's how Apple can axe it.

And there's nothing wrong with my logic. On the one hand you have couple thousand people needing a Mac Pro, and on the other hand you have millions of professionals using other Macs. I wish Apple didn't axe this line, but I sure am not surprised.

Looks to me like Apple wants to have its investors invest elsewhere. If this year represents the post Jobs Apple, Apple is headed down the tubes.

I am seriously considering emailing Tim Cook on this one. This is a slap in the face, combined with a simultaneous middle finger and kick in the ass...
It is offensive. There is NOTHING "new" about this Mac Pro, I wonder if they can legally call it "new" since these parts were released two years ago. Major, MAJOR fail.

And magically that 17000 represent 100% of the people wanting a Mac Pro.

Let me just create an page named "We want a new iPhone" right now and I'll be the only person who likes it. And that'll be why the iPhone should be killed too.

I've emailed him several times asking about their commitment to the pro market but have yet to receive a response.

Yeah because we all know Jobs was all for the niche products...

Bunch of wingers

The Mac Pro is still an awesome machine. It is so quiet, so powerful, we cannot complain. There is no comparable machine (in terms of quality and pleasure of use). Stop whining! I have Mid-2010 Mac Pro...I love it...i hope it lasts for ever. Anyone with an older MacPro will love the 3.33 hex version with an SSD. Very snappy and powerful.

Why do you guys take this s*it so seriously!

GEEZ! Apple is a company, and like any other company it makes products to make money, that is it, the bottom line is all that matters. Trust me they don't wake up everyday and figure out ways to ruin someone's day, just breath, if you don't like the Mac Pro, then don't buy it:cool:
