And magically that 17000 represent 100% of the people wanting a Mac Pro.

Let me just create an page named "We want a new iPhone" right now and I'll be the only person who likes it. And that'll be why the iPhone should be killed too.

Yes, and 17000 is a really small percentage of Apple's professional user base. We are talking about tens of millions of professionals and only 17000 need a Mac Pro. Still not getting it?

And why are you trying to make it look like I somehow am "for" this decision? I hate the fact that Apple is killing the line. I'm simply saying that this doesn't effect a lot of professionals.

This is ridiculous. Either it´s Apple making fun of us or it´s them throwing us the proverbial bone, as in "sit tight a little longer". Which isn´t the professional thing to do here. Good communication works differently and people havw to be able to plan ahead. I guess most sane people will plan with HP or Dell now. I know I will.

The "Pro" Page has been the same for ages, it is not tended to anymore. Now the "missing" update and the picture comes together. Either they´re working on something big and/or different or it´s a major marketing fault. This joke of an update will be heard beyond the usual mac blogs and pro forums, this is a serious change (or rather failure) of course for Apple as a whole. They have identified themselves with pros all along, now that the iToys make more cash we´re not interesting anymore.

It is odd that the company, whose products I once bought to get my work done easier/better/faster, now forces me to change again to get my work done properly.

Oh and I hope AAPL plummets below 500. At least until tomorrow. :|

Really badly handled 'update' whatever the reasons or motivations behind it. If they're going to pull something like this, we should get some kind of explanation.

The terrible thing is, I'm now hoping this is a stop-gap measure to increase initial 'Retina' next gen MacBook Pro sales, or a cheeky way to clear old stock by adding RAM and news CPUs to otherwise unchanged machines before the 'real' updates happen.

I really feel for everyone who was desperate for the USB 3, Thunderbolt etc Mac Pro that should have been announced today.

Shambolic.

The Mac Pro is still an awesome machine. It is so quiet, so powerful, we cannot complain. There is no comparable machine (in terms of quality and pleasure of use). Stop whining! I have Mid-2010 Mac Pro...I love it...i hope it lasts for ever. Anyone with an older MacPro will love the 3.33 hex version with an SSD. Very snappy and powerful.

You just don't want to feel bad when the new one comes along.

GEEZ! Apple is a company, and like any other company it makes products to make money, that is it, the bottom line is all that matters. Trust me they don't wake up everyday and figure out ways to ruin someone's day, just breath, if you don't like the Mac Pro, then don't buy it:cool:

You don't get it. People complaining here actually like the Mac Pro but have held off as the hardware is ancient.

Maybe the people who handled the Final Cut Pro X roll-out were in charge of this one...

This really feels like a joke. They just could have said we are not updating this anymore. This really is not Apple-like. They should have announced that they are simply discontinuing and selling all inventory. Because nobody is going to really buy these things imho. But probably that's exactly what they are doing, but since the Xeons are never inventoried, instead of selling 2.5 year old ones, they are selling 2 year old ones. I bet this "update" is basically costing them zero in R&D. Probably there's nothing changed inside and you can simply install the new chips into the old ones.

I'm so disappointed by this. Trying to think about it rationally but I just can't see the strategy behind this, other than as one huge slap in the face. I could rant on but feel I should sleep on this one and then compose an email to Mr Cook for him to ignore tomorrow.

Desperately unhappy about this. Apple have let us all down big time. :(

I'm in much the same boat you are; among other things, I've been using DP since it was "Performer". Thought you'd be interested to know that MOTU announced in January DP8 will be cross-platform when it's released. (I know that's not a big help, but it's something...)

I've had the money for a new Pro for over a year and have been waiting for an update. Given the disappointing news today, I'm looking seriously at Windows systems from Sweetwater Sound and Rain Computers.

Been a Mac guy since the late '80s and am sorry that it's come to this.

Like many other commenters, I can understand the secrecy on the "consumer" side where there's much more competition and product cycles are shorter. But this is a lousy way for Apple to treat those of us who need actual workstations...I can't do my job with Garage Band.

You're right... we are just a few...
but, now for this "few" thousands....
what are our options ?

Try to be constructive like in the beginning of this thread,
and, help us to find a good way to say goodbye to Apple...

Thanks.

I for one am going to keep using my 2008 Mac Pro and wait until the iMacs are fast enough to warrant an upgrade. Fortunately I don't need a key PCI-e and only need faster processors. People who need PCI-e will have to switch or wait and see if TB variants of that tech are around the corner.

I wish Apple would post some figures regarding the Mac Pro:

a) Are Pro-users using iMacs and MacBook Pro's more and more?
b) Are Mac Pro sales really bad (i.e. like the Xserve)?
c) What percentage Final Cut Pro X and Aperture sales from the MAS were done on Mac Pro's vs. other Macs?

Something must be going on.
Tim knows what this update must look like to Pro-users (and other Mac Pro enthusiasts)....
I'm trying to be positive, so here goes:
1. A major Mac Pro redesign failed just before the WWDC and Apple had to do *something*.
2. The iMac is getting a major update. I.e. a "Pro" version of the 27" iMac coming.

IMHO, Apple could have done just as well to keep the current Mac Pro, and state that they would kill it over 3 months.
But they didn't.... why?
Does Apple really want this Mac to sell badly to give it them a reason to quit it?

I don't understand the needs of other users? I'm a Mac Pro user, look at my signature maybe? I also realize that we are a very very very very small percentage of the professionals using Mac's nowadays. That's what other "pro"s are not realizing.

Gotcha now. No offense meant and we're on the same page anyway.

They have been more since the introduction of Mac Pro. We already know that.

b) Are Mac Pro sales really bad (i.e. like the Xserve)?
The facebook page got 17000 likes, that's your figure.

c) What percentage Final Cut Pro X and Aperture sales from the MAS were done on Mac Pro's vs. other Macs?

No clue but probably most Aperture users use a laptop.

I am trying to picture a 27 inch iMac with a minimum of 4 PCI Express 3.0 slots.

I wager they're only keeping the line around as their own developers and those of some closer partners use them for iOS and OSX software dev.

I bet my 5770 upgraded 2008 Mac Pro (10GB ram, 8x2.8GHz CPUs) will "run" any video game within 0.5% of the frame rate as a "new" Mac Pro. Seems like video games basically live on the video cards now. So this upgrade definitely has no intention of helping gamers out. As a developer, I can't say I'd expect the change in compile times to impress me very much. Indeed Hackintoshes sound better and better. I just hate potentially destabilizing OSX. Damnit Apple.

I'm tempted to buy one of these new machines, install Windows ME on it and return it, along with an invoice saying I've further upgraded the system.

They are dumping the Mac Pro because it's not selling well. Simple as that. It's not selling well because most of the professionals are using other Macs.

It's not selling well because it was two years out of date. And it still won't sell well because this "update" still has the CPU a year out of date (at least) and the rest of the machine STILL two years out of date.

We can all speculate on how well a machine that was actually up to date and competitive with similar PCs would sell. But it's brain dead to look at sales of recent and current MP and draw the conclusion that nobody is interested in MP. People are definitely interested, we're just not dumb enough to waste money on out of date, overpriced garbage.

Apple hasn't upgraded the Mac Pro in 2 years because they didn't have anything to update it with until last month.

Wow, you really don't get it.

The newest tech in these machines came out February 2011, so they could have updated to this very lineup over a year ago. They didn't.

Now Intel finally does have some new tech that's a real improvement over the previous generation. Newer CPUs including some up to 8 cores per chip, SATA III, TB, usb 3 (and even some of those were available a year ago). That's all available today, that's all the stuff people thought was holding up a MP update.

And now they finally update and it doesn't include any of it. Apple has had Intel as an excuse in the past. But Intel finally got new chips out the door, that excuse doesn't fly any more.

What a joke of an update. How do they manage to get video cards that old? So Apple doesn't want my money, fine. I'm not interested in a fancy overheating AdapterBook Pro. But they'll sell millions to hipsters wanting to upload all of their personal information to facebook and icloud.
