And are there two sockets for flash storage or just one? It sure looks like there's a space where they could put a second one, but no socket there.

Yep that's what I thought, maybe all-internal storage of 2x1TB flash will be viable... in about 10 years time...

Good thing no one smokes in the office any more

we have 12 cores for almost 2 years now ... the new trend next year will be dual 8 , 10 , 12 Xeon systems which means 16 , 20 and 24 cores.

each CPU will give you 40 PCIe 3.0 Lanes. this means 80 for dual CPU.

Apple is going down .... and this time Steve Jobs will not come back lol

You certainly must realize that the vast majority of Apple's "pro" base is not dual CPU, right?

How about CUDA eh? What about CUDA accelerated programs such as After Effects, or Octane? Huh? You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

I have nothing against AMD, Firepro's are great cards. What I am against is fewer options, what happens 4/5 years down the road when AMD releases vastly better GPU's, obviously you won't be able to upgrade which has always been the point of the Mac Pro. Guess you'll just have to buy a new one, what a brilliant business decision for Apple.

Why wouldn't you want to game on this? I honestly don't know since I don't play computer games. I doubt it'll be that expensive given the components, can't be more expensive than the highest end iMac and people game on those.

Umm...we've just went 1000 days without an update to the Mac Pro and everybody was complaining that it was the end of the Mac Pro.

It makes me want to ask -
In 4 to 5 years down the road, do you still want to be using the same old technology while your competitors are using the latest hardware and it's faster?

or -
Upgrading a video card in 4 to 5 years without upgrading the CPU doesn't make sense unless you have a specific workflow that allows for performance enhancement only in the GPU and not in the CPU.

And if you do, I'd be interested in hearing about it as that would be something new for me to learn.

There is this thing, without using emoticons, called subtlety.

;););););););););););)

There. Are those enough for you?

Subtlety doesn't translate well on the Internet, you should know better. Not that pretending to continue the plastic vs metal enclosure "debate" is that funny anyway.

never mind the bickering actually... who's actually THERE AT WWDC, to have a play with the Mac Pro and those people from Pixar, making some ****** movie rehash on it?

You certainly must realize that the vast majority of Apple's "pro" base is not dual CPU, right?

Like the 17" MacBook Pro I'd say Apple is doing away with the dual CPU configuration for the simple fact that it only accounts for a smaller percentage of their Mac Pro sales and with desktop sales being in a slump Apple is going to try and draw in a larger crowd of more average "pro-sumers" that are willing to pay more to step up from the iMac.

Not all "pros" need xeon server class processors. But quite a lot need internal expandability that the Mac Pro [no longer] offers.

Well the new Mac Pro does look significantly smaller than the outgoing model. There should be plenty of space left over for an external HDD or two. Something like this would be better off connected to a NAS anyhow.

You certainly must realize that the vast majority of Apple's "pro" base is not dual CPU, right?

I dont know .. and I am a dual CPU user . and Apple Killed it.

IMACS can have 12 cores do you know that? Just change the socket to LGA 2011 and add that X79 chipset instead of the Z77 , no big Deal.

I wish I can work at Apple for just one year ....

External enclosures for GPU cards might be out of the question, because Thunderbolt 2 is set at 20Gbps which isn't exactly close to the speeds a PCIe Gen3 (x16) bus can give when on a motherboard. So probably no hi-end GPUs for us (they just wouldn't be efficient, plus the ridiculous cost of a powered enclosure like that...), but, considering how Adobe is now looking to abandon CUDA for their Premiere CC (ffs, after we all bought Nvidia cards) and moving to OpenCL, dual FirePro cards might NOT be the worst idea. However, that is still months away, if not a year.

As for storage, sure - a lot of expensive Thunderbolt enclosures for drives will be an option. Or a very expensive Thunderbolt RAID.

This design move is odd to say the least. Apple has always fought to reduce cable clutter and now they want us to put this coffee blender on our desks with just a ********* of cables lying around from all those daisy chained devices... it's wrong.

They innovate for innovations sake. There was nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with the form factor of the old Mac Pro. It was just that it was out of date. They could have put in the new CPUs, cards, flash storage and Thunderbold ports into that same old chassis and it would have been beyond awesome.

It would have been so nice to have an ethernet port that they put *two* on it.

Seriously?

first the crying because it "looks" like it's made of plastic, now crying about it not having ports that it totally has built in right there. They even lit them up for you in one of the photos. Oh, and talked about them in white on black text.

I have some visual disorder obviously.

Glad they did the obvious thing and went one better. Now I should complain that they should put a small battery in it. Need to ask for a few more things.

I think it's a remarkable engineer feat. It definitely shows off how talented Apple's engineering and design team are.

I don't think it's the best design for a professional or semi-pro as it seems more form over function in many regards. I don't agree with philosophy of having to buy another device in order to get everything you want in a computer. Not going to be dropping it into a rack and running xserve on it. Should be interesting to see how well it's accepted by the professional community.

Oh deary me... it seems we're just going to have to let the "trash can" people get it out of their systems... it may take a month or two for them to stop re-iterating different slants on the same crappy "jokey jokey, haha me" comparison images, so maybe just hold one's tongue until the obvious, tedious nerdy repetition of 4chan images has run its' course... **sigh**

Back to work - the thing the rest of us do :)

lol, best "ugly" comment so far.

I personally thing that performance-wise, it looks like a good option. I just.... man I don't know if those thunderbolt-to-usb3.0 hubs or cables or whatever, or direct thunderbolt-connected storage will be cheap at all.

And, honestly, I'd rather be able to choose not to have tons of cables running around.

but, guys, we might get lucky, maybe some NAS connected directly via thunderbolt? you know, if it's actually affordable

but no matter what the cons are, at least they made one
Why would you need thunderbolt to usb 3.0 hubs? It has 4 usb 3.0 ports and 6 thunderbolts

will i be able to buy this new mac pro in uk ???

does anyone think this new mac will be available in the uk or if not
do you think it will be possible to find somewhere in uk to buy one ?

anyone?

thanks

for those who are POed about the cylinder form, don't worry! Some aftermarket mob will be selling empty old MacPro cases you can buy and put the cylinder inside along with the expansion bits. For me I don't care what it looks like. Similar to others on this forum, I'm waiting for more specs to decide if I'll buy it or version 1.2.
