a unified system handling 4K out of the box is... an issue? a problem? too costly? plastic? looks like a trash can (that takes the suburban cherry award)? Can't stick in those POS buggy cards mom gave you money for?

WTF, who are you people?

I can't use specific cards without multiple chassis (and even then the bandwidth would be restricted) that I need for media production.

Thanks for trying.

it's plastic, it doesn't strike me as wow...it looks like an urn

Guess you didn't like...

By the looks of it, it doesn't seem like you could upgrade anything. RAM?

This "garbage can" is a joke. Apple's 2013 Newton. Steve Jobs is most certainly rolling in is grave.

Three thumbs DOWN.

Drama, drama, drama

It seems like I see a lot of the same people complain when Apple introduces new things. It's kind of like watching talk shows where there is a manufactured fight every day.

After a while nobody pays attention.

And it seems like those people who say, "That's it, I've reached the end of my rope, you've gone too far, GOODBYE" are still around to do the same dramatic exit over and over again.

I'll wait til I actually see what the product is before I start my rant.

While I like the design I sure hope there is room for expansion inside or a way to replace GPUs.

The real problem with this kind of designs is that most expansion sellers are lazy thieves....

This is one of the reason I went the hackintosh way, with 8 drives in the machines, a powerful consumer-grade GPU, even a pro-light GPU is possible now with Titan.
External drives use low cost HDD whose reliability is hard to asses, and even worse is that quality of the components of the enclosures...
I have lost data in RAID enclosures when PSU died, my hackintosh offers a way more controlled and stable environment for my drives than most USB3, and the few TB enclosures.

If Apple really want this design to succeed they'll need to jump in the enclosure making business, if only for pulling the rest of the offering up.

I had a sense the thing would be cylindrical - seems like the best way to cool components (fan and/or Venturi effect). I wouldn't be surprised if a great deal of thought went into minimizing the amount of energy the new MacPro uses to cool everything.

Last time people said "wait till they announce the new Mac Pros". Well... now they have.

I hope they paid close attention to noise too.

The Steve Jobs rolling in his grave comments are not just disrespectful they're outright disgusting. You don't like the new announcement fine but why keep calling out to the dead.

This could actually be brilliant. The cooling would be fantastic, which is a huge plus. The expandability, while inconvenient in some ways, could allow for a greater variety of products to be attached through thunderbolt. The key concern I have is how much memory can be added and in what configuration. Apart from that, it's looking kinda cool.

I really want to know who told Apple that a pro-desktop needs to be small/compact...

I'm sure the thing will be one heck of a computer when you attach all of your TB devices...but I'm just imagining my setup; it would take up more space than a current Mac Pro once I attach everything...and it completely loses the clean/uniform look that Mac is usually 'all about.'

At least 4 external drives; minimum 1 optical drive; external CF card reader; protools card; and more I'm probably not even thinking of. I'm going to have the ugliest, least uniform setup ever...And I guess I'm going to have to stack everything on top of each other? Because there's no way I'm lining these up side-by-side...

Mac Pro??? Or pro sumer?

Really Disappointed!!!

Plastic? Cylindrical? Not very good if going in a rack!

What about all the professional programs that require Nvidia Cuda graphics processing?

AMD is sper slow on Davinci Resolve. Looks like I will have to sell my mac version of the software and go Windows. Then I can expand without having to but thunderbolt cables and external chassis as these wont be cheap! And Thunderbolt 1 won't cut it.

How small is this new design going to be after you have external chassis for raids, gfx cards, video cards, audio cards etc? not so small then!

Plus Apple don't pay tax. Maybe its time to say goodbye to Apple......

Apple doesn't update Mac Pro, Macrumors users complain,
Apple does update Mac Pro, Macrumors users complain.

I wish people would stop saying things like these. It's not as simplistic as that. We are professional users who have certain needs, and want machines which will be up to the increasing demands of modern apps. Just because Apple finally redesigns the Mac Pro it doesn't mean that the new design is an actual improvement.

Information is scant, no release date, no price, no information about how much RAM this thing supports, or if there is any space in there for any internal drives. The initial information seems to indicate that this is not a machine that people could upgrade easily. The apparent lack of internal PCI-E slots might be an issue for many users (graphics users, audio users, etc).

Thunderbolt 2 seems exciting, but Thunderbolt 1 so far has had a very limited amount of support from 3rd party companies. It's nice that they included USB 3 at least.

It all remains to be seen...but don't make it sound like we're a bunch of ungrateful *******s because we're not. We have needs, so that we can make a living, pay our bills and support our families, and if the machines that are available to us limit our ability to do those things...they we have every right to complain!

I personally think it's super awesome, but I know the Mac Pro lovers aren't going to be happy. Expansion has moved external =|

Are you kidding? As an avid Mac Pro user, I was expecting something like this. Who needs internal hard drives anymore? Storage is being added constantly nowadays, no way 3 extra HD's do the trick. I have 20+ 3TB storage. Any pro working in NLE would need tons of storage, so if you are going to need more than 4 drives anyway, why put more than 1 inside? Thunderbolt is the way to go for storage. The only thing needed now is that the GPU is upgradeable.

----------

I don't want to ruin you expectations but those GPU will not be able to handle games, matter of drivers and architecture.

Actually workstation GPU's handle games just fine. Not as good as the top of the line gaming GPU's, but you certainly won't be crying over that.

so strange, for years we had to read that Apple should bring out a new MacPro now we have it and have to read they should have kept the old one. -To some you can make it never right-.

What is hard to understand? Pros want expandability on the inside. This does not have that.

The only thing you need on the motherboard is the GPU. No other PCI hardware I know of actually uses more PCI bandwidth than what TB2 can handle in an external chassis.

Not that far a stretch. I think the cube started at $2300. If the new Mac Pro does have a plastic skin, it wouldn't surprise me that Apple would charge that much. Sadly, it's in its history.

Apple also used that cheap beige plastics as well. If the new Mac Pro used that kind of plastic because it's in its history, that would be ok?

Look I know Apple used good quality plastic in the past in their Macs, but they have moved on to better materials(glass and aluminum). This is a step back for Apple.

Speak for yourself. I haven't been wanting internal expandability since I started using external storage years ago.

New mac pro, looks nice. For me it's too bad they don't offer a "low cost" version with more consumer orriented internals like core i7 cpu instead to keep the cost lower

That's called an iMac.

----------

I wish they would have used the old design. I see no room for expanding hard drive space and I'm curious if the GPU will be upgradable.

Unbelievable. For years Apple was criticized for not changing the design. They finally move to something truly revolutionary and you lament the loss of the old design? Expansion is no longer needed in one case. Thunderbolt 2 makes expansion external and removes the need for a large, unwieldy box. But some people lament the loss of the box because they are unable to think outside of one.

There are NO internal hard drives. It uses FLASH.

Next question is about "Fusion". I assume it will appear the user that all storage is in the flash, then adding a Thunderbold disk array will add more storage but the user will NOT need to manage what is kept where.

Mac Pro?

I guess Apple mean Pro like they meant Pro when talking about FCP X, i.e. not Pro in the slightest....

I hope the specs improve when more info comes out, as this could be like FCPX and be another factor driving Professionals back to Windows or Linux.

You really don't understand what a pro needs or wants, and you certainly don't speak for all pros out there - well, maybe those with no soul.
