And I didn't end up settling for an iMac, a Mac Pro, or a Mac Mini.

After DECADES of being an Apple fanboy - believing in the company when no one else did (much to the ridicule of all my friends) - Apple has made a Windows user out of me.

What you DO with your Mac's? I think all the folks who are gripog here don't actuclly haven any need or reason to buy one of these. They keep talkig about hardware and don't even say what they need to get done.

I think in the past the Mac Pro was cheap enough that people with no real need for a high end computer bought them "just because". An now they are upset because apparently the Mac Pro base entry point is now very high. Well if you need this and you are earning a living off the computer then buy it. If not the quad-core iMac will do what you need.

For most "normal" people, students who have to write papers, home videos and so on the Macbook Air looks like the way to go.

I don't want to ruin you expectations but those GPU will not be able to handle games, matter of drivers and architecture.

Yep. And gamers certainly aren't going to pay $1500 for an expansion chassis and video card just to play them. You'll get the same video performance as playing those games on a Macbook.

Fuu....

The real problem here is that they designed a workstation for the very high-end.

Plan on spending $3k on the base unit, and another $2k on expansion units to get any work done.

What they've done here is left out the "middle" market of the existing MacPros, who need more than a iMac, but don't have $5k+ to spend on a system and a pile of peripherals.

The g4 cube stills looks impressive today with its floating design.

Hopefully better in person,
but now the new pro looks like a Dyson Air freshener or a trash bin?

I.... like it. Really. Not as a Mac Pro, but as a successor to the G4 Cube.

It is an amazing design. The TB2 expandability may be just enough to sustain the basic expansion needs one might have and wow.. the design... it's so Apple.

It's black and sleek and with that hardware (expandable or not) it is fast.

The Mac Pro is dead. I knew that already and I've already jumped ship, invested in an AMD beast of a machine that delivers everything and then some.

But this new "Mac Pro" will have one major problem: it will be very expensive. Dual Xeons, AMD Fire (wow) and a PCIe flash drive are expensive parts on their own, let alone when put in such an amazing case.

We'll be lucky if that thing starts at 3000 USD.

As a Mac Pro, this is just inadequate by far, but as a "Mac Pro", this is droolworthy. Wow.:cool:

Its gorgeous, genius, and completely innovative. Thats a full aluminum shell, not plastic. I don't have any need for one personally or business wise, but I sure wish that I did.

mhh.. a lot better than what I had feared.
mixed feelings here.

not sure I agree that it is an advantage to make the workstation all nice and slim when it creates the need to use a NAS and/or a bulky external HDD/Optical enclosure (also adding to the price).

will it still be possible to connect dual-DVI displays?

Wow the pictures on Apple.com and the keynote is misleading.... A lot lighter and clearly metal in real life pictures. Where like I said, looked like plastic from the slide pics.

I think the old (well, current) Mac Pro is the most beautiful desktop computer ever made, even after all these years. Shame to see it go. :(

You can pick them up quite inexpensively on eBay and at various used computer stores, etc. There are entire communities devoted to hacking PC parts into them. Nothing stopping a fan from "upgrading" to the latest PC tech and Hackintosh to their hearts content.

Probably going to start at $5,000

The GPGPUs alone would run you $3000.

The mentioned Streams of 4096 and maximum around 7TFLOPS of precision computing puts this combo at the FirePro S10000.

That presently goes for $3,199 on Newegg.

With a completely different cooling solution and dual on-board GPGPUs with so many stream processors and high computing outputs one expects the 6GB DDR5 shared memory on this GCN 2.0 architecture that is most certainly a custom design for Apple.

Most likely this is the Orlando Team working with AMD on this project.

I agree, I don't see this System starting under $5000+.

It's made out of machined aluminum (from Apple's website: "Refined impact extrusion technologies are more material-efficient and give the polished aluminum enclosure its incredible shape and finish.").

For all you moaning as confirmed in the pictures, straight on apples own website:

Refined impact extrusion technologies are more material-efficient and give the polished aluminum enclosure its incredible shape and finish.

There, METAL! ;)

I wish they would have used the old design. I see no room for expanding hard drive space and I'm curious if the GPU will be upgradable.

I believe that it was stated that nothing was upgradable internally.

Yes, it's about as Pro as a Porche Boxster.

Flash storage only?! Fast but tiny. You're not going to be able to fit 12TB of high speed storage in there External storage is flaky using extra power (extra power supplies). It's also more likely to fail due to cable interruption and impact.

To all the people who are saying you will not buy because of looks? Its not for you! What professional company you work for and or what professional application do you use? In my studio, I don't care what the damn thing looks like? It sits in the back ground and works it A** off! THATS IT FOLKS!!! Do AS I SAY, AND DO it WELL!!! That's what I want my system to do! You show off the results, NOT your hardware! bed room Gameboys!

I think there may be black goo in there, ala Prometheus (Alien, etc.) It's part of the master plot to destroy the planet! Noooooo!

Actually, it's pretty slick. Would fit well under a lot of desks. Less toe banging if you like to wear sandals.

Edit: Never mind. I don't mind being the 299th person to mention something, but I draw the line at being the 300th!

I agree....people who buy these $2500-$5000 workstations don't give a hoot about sexiness. Why Apple would sacrifice the expandability aspect is beyond words. Unless, of course, Apple is going to sell pre-configured Pros that are essentially non-configurable after sale.

I'm not in the market for a Mac Pro, the iMac is fine or me at home...but this thing looks seriously cool! I doubt its plastic like some think. Remember, its only a sneak peak. Its probably anodized aluminum. But who knows.

Some are calling it a "trash can" or the "cube part deux" but I dig it. They needed to radically depart from the old style, and I think they did that in a big way with this radical new design. Very futuristic.

But most importantly, its super powerful and small enough to keep on your desk instead of hidden under it. Heck, its so much smaller than the previous Mac Pro the damn thing looks portable. Which...maybe a good thing for some mobile professionals.

Having said all that, I'm happy with the iMac & ipad set up I have. :)
