I wouldn't pay $400 for a new one, who would when a new one is not even 100 days away?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::cool::cool::cool::eek::):):mad::mad::mad::D;)

Maybe someone who would want to use an iPad for the next 100 days? Us macrumors readers might not be in that case. I'm sure a significant percentage of the people on this site who wanted the original model have already gotten it.
I'm sure these would have good resale value as well.

No, thanks. I paid 2K for my late 2009 iMac that will barely play games at 720 and locks up for 30 seconds at a time when iTunes (is it still 32-bit?) gets upset. The Apple Tax has grown old and bitter. Ring me when the iPad is $199 and has at least the cheapo grain-cams from the iPod.

Yep it is still 32-bit and laggy. You'll have plenty of fanboys who will defend our comments though.

It's funny though that Apple mandates that all applications be a certain way yet their own software isn't even up to spec.

What's EDR technology?

It's just bluetooth

EDR stands for Enhanced (?) Data Rate, or something like that. The original Bluetooth spec had a quite slow data rate-- barely good enough for streaming low-quality audio. The EDR speeds things up considerably, making it viable for, say, wireless portable printing or multi-megabyte data transfer between mobile devices.

Yes, as long as you stand 4 feet away from them.

LOL. :D

Do not want to retrogress to a camera-less, low-on-memory, heavy-on-hands, limited functionality device for free. That would be dumb.

Lovin my Galaxy tab - until the dual core Motorola Tab comes out that is.

Is there some manufacturing problem than causes DOAs or breaking after brief usage? And now Apple have to move those as refurbished by offering special prices?

More like: people buy the cheaper non-3G model, discover how awesome the tablet is, discover that "awesome" only extends as far as their WiFi coverage, and return it for an upgrade to a 3G model. Apple ends up with a big pile of WiFi-only models in perfectly good shape, so they swap in a new battery & wipe the fingerprints off and resell it for what is still a profit (on top of the profit from the 3G model which prompted the return).

Nothing sinister. Just customer dynamics, wanting cheap and then discovering the cost of cheap.

At less than $10/day, that could be a great return on investment if it facilitates a profitable "online anywhere anytime" task. It's not just a toy to everyone.

I highly doubt this is the case.

when I first saw this story, I didn't automatically think there must be some problem with iPad, hence all of these excess refurbished units.

for a first generation product, Apple is selling a massive amount of iPads and I think Apple was somewhat slow in starting the refurbish cycle for iPad.

I see these discounts just as a sign that Apple is actually really diving into the refurbish cycle and wants to push out a lot of iPads.

Gee, excessive amounts of refurbished items huh?

Sounds like a quality control problem.

Heh, it's not often you see this perfect moment on a message board when a good explanation of a situation is posted, and then immediately under it at the same timestamp is a snide conspiracy theory that doesn't fit market facts but does fit the poster's personal wishes. The snide comment is already answered by the post directly above it, negating the snide comment completely. Perfect.

I sold my ipad, (wife used it most of the time)... then I really missed it... so just bought one at the special rate! It's less then what many are willing to sell for on craigslist.

Planning on selling it when iPad 2 comes out.

Good point. I use my iPad a lot for work, and while I don't directly make a profit off of it, it makes troubleshooting emergency issues much easier on the road. I haven't carried a laptop around in years, and doing work from the iPad is much easier than the iPhone.

what?!
what was the purpose of asking that?

was it just to get people to fight and argue about the term retina display?

No. It was to get people to say "oh, that HarryKeogh!. He's poking fun at all the people who say the next gen iPad is going to have a retina display by asking if the refurbished one does! Boy is HarryKeogh funny. I'm going to offer him a job and my daughter's virginity"

However, I see my original comment has had no such effect.

I was only a tool for the gods.

I see what you are talking about but it was fate.

Not an inside job.

Glad to see the news police are in full force today.

The specifications for the refurbished units are identical to those of the new units which you can view right here.

Crud. I JUST ordered a refurbished 64GB Wifi one on Sunday. Haven't even received it yet. You just never know. sigh.
