Sounds like a music industry tactic. "Yay, we're selling millions of tracks online everyday, to celebrate our success let's jack up the price (and scare our new customers off)"

Well, they wouldn't scare off new customers. Considering they probably didn't know it was so cheap before...

I was ready to shotgun purchase it at $69, but now to find it's unexpectedly higher (and more than that magic $100 threshold) it's going to be a lot harder for me to justify purchasing it.

Yep, same here, I'm pretty disapointed.

That's twice as much as I was planning on spending, (well, almost), and instead I think I'll purchase the ATH-ANC7 noise canceling headphones I've been wanting for a while.

Which is sad really, because I'd rather have Leopard, but I can't justify being an early adopter for that price. DISCLAIMER: I think it's a fair price, just not what I'm willing to pay for it at this point.

I posted this eariler under the bogus heading, "Apple Store Down, PowerBOok G5's this Tuesday."

So... this is the Leopard. Jobs mentioned "Top secret" in Leopard when he presented but seems there is NO secret functions revealed.

I don't think any major secret functions will be revealed with minor updates (.x) so I should call him liar.

I am a typical Mac fanboy but recent Apple's movement (including iPhone contract) doesn't make me feel happy... :(

It's amazing that they didn't even update the front page of Apple.com. Compared to all they hype they generated with the previous releases, Leopard's marketing campaign is non-existent.

I guess it's the "new" Apple. :apple:

Edit: Nevermind, they just updated it. I feel a little better now.

Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard and its 300-plus new features and innovations are coming Oct. 26, 2007.

If you buy a qualifying Mac between October 1, 2007 and December 29, 2007, and it does not include Mac OS X Leopard, you’re eligible to get Leopard after it’s released for just $9.95 plus tax.

Still waiting, why deal with hastle of installing Leopard and paying $9.95 upgrade fee.

Where did you see this info? I got my mac on October 8th...

Photo Booth requires an iSight camera (built-in or external), USB video class (UVC) camera, or FireWire DV camcorder; and an Intel or PowerPC G5 processor. Backdrop effects require an Intel Core Duo or faster processor. Backdrop effects when using a DV camcorder require fixed focus, exposure, and white balance.

OK, my PowerBook G4 just misses two new features. I was expecting every machine with the Leopard could get the Photo Booth...and no Backdrop effect...:(

Anyway, hope to get it on the release day

There are two reasons that they keep reducing the student discount:
1. Non-students routinely take advantage of the discount.
2. Apple's marketshare among students has been rising rapidly

I would agree with the first point, but the second is an even better reason to keep the student discount down under $100.

I have often advocated that for home users and students, especially for students, that OS and software vendors should offer their tools for massive discounts if not free for non-profit/educational use. If you think about it, all of those students will eventually enter the workforce and put pressure on their employers to use the tools that they are familiar with. This also goes for home users but they are harder to keep track of and keep on the non-profit use list. The cheaper the software is for students and the more students who use it and become familiar with it means more pressure on employers to adopt those tools in the future. A cheap OSX for students could pay off in years to come as people enter the workforce and push employers to adopt OSX.

OK, so I take it the new mac mini I bought on Sep 29 doesn't qualify? ... I should have waited 2 days before I bought :::sigh:::

Do you HAVE to get the family pack to install on more than 1 machine? When I bought Tiger I was able to install on my tower and iBook (which I thought was very cool of apple to not hassle us about).

Do you think that would still work?

Ooooh! £9.80 reduction! Makes paying all this money for uni REALLY worth it. Still, Leopard is gonna be awesome.

I checked this site earlier and there was still speculation. I just went to the Apple store and "October 26." Looks like I was a little late though. I'll be getting a new Macbook when I start my new job at the beginning of November. Woohoo!

Just wow on the edu price. It is a safe bet that pirating of Leopard are going to sky rocket.

Apple is taking adatage of students because they know students are most likely to want to be on the cutting edge so they are going after the easy money from people who can not afford it. It looks like apple is trying to phase out the edu pricing slowly. Well Apple looks like M$ is going to go back to kicking you rear in the edu world.
