It must have been really bad then, since they are releasing bent iPads saying it's ok. I can't imagine the issues with Air Power.

Yeah, but that's for a patent, not a product.

The link, yes, but there are a few prototypes and nearly shipping products. Linus talked about their CES demo, and has showed off a commercial application and a model train that is wirelessly powered. Not efficiently charging an iPhone demos, but it’s more than a patent.

Not kidding. Can we sue or class action sue? It was a unique feature I was very excited to have and anticipated when I purchased my Xs...

I’m still fascinated by what the deciding factor was to put this in the keynote. One would assume they had a working prototype that they felt they could productionalize. So what changed from the keynote until now?

Failed UL-certification over and over? :)

Well that’s disappointing and extremely embarrassing for Apple.

Part of the reason I just bought the AirPods 2 with wireless charging case was in anticipation of the AirPower Mat’s release.

Had I known it was never going to be released, I almost certainly would have opted for the cheaper non wireless case. While there are other third party wireless chargers available, I am not excited about the current limitations on charging speed so haven’t purchased any yet. The promoted features of the AirPower Mat offering faster charging of multiple devices together was a little more compelling and that’s what I was waiting for.

One might argue that Apple should offer a refund to customers who purchased the wireless charging case but that’s probably an unrealistic or unreasonable expectation. What’s more interesting to see is if Apple finds itself in serious trouble for false advertising given the AirPower Mat went beyond rumours and was mentioned on officially released products such as the latest AirPods.

They never promised this “feature.”

Right. Speed was not a promise IIRC

I’d love to know what the specific engineering issues were. Hopefully one of the insiders will leak the reason.
Sounds like heat management was a major problem as the coils had to intertwine with each other to accommodate the package Apple was aiming for.

That is pretty terrible.

After 2+ years of vaporware, after just recently securing the name, they cancel it? What a joke. And now...what? They won't even attempt to make a respectable entry into this space? The market is flooded with absolute junk. Nothing that even approaches Apple's standard of quality.

there are some that are prettt good. sure they are not as what airpower “promised “ to do. but even apple can created now

get off the apple high horse

It wasn't a mess at all- complicated engineering projects like this start and fail all the time, inside every company. The ONE single Mistake AAPL made was announcing it prematurely. After that, it was all the press and consumers and blogs running rampant. And now we see why Apple does NOT normally announce projects before they're ready.

the “ONE” mistake eh

Call me paranoid and/or creating a conspiracy theory, but I think Apple might have been releasing intentional rumors about the production of the AirPower recently, leading most of the people to believe it will be released soon, in order to use the "charge all devices in one place" hype train to boost AirPods 2 wireless sales. People might have opted in on buying the AirPods 2 wireless (or just the case) because they wanted the convenience of charging them all in one spot, and once the initial release hype was over, they were somewhat "safe" to cancel the charging mat.

Of course, I could also be totally wrong, but it could be one of the reasons we were hearing so much about the AirPower recently.

This is the worst thing that has ever happened to Apple.

I don't think they can recover from this.

Has anyone broken the news to the people lined up outside the 5th Avenue store to be among the first to own one of these?

Obviously, I'm being sarcastic. The majority of comments on every other AirPower article up to now have dismissed it as a (presumably) overpriced niche product that had no reason to exist in the first place.

apple has lost steve and there went there mojo. when was the last time you even seen a line outside the apple store? as far as were i live there hasn't been a line for atleast 3+ years and i have to drive by that store everyday on my way to work

Yawn. I never cared about it anyway. I prefer to charge my iPhone on my Anker wireless charging stand (where I can read it) and my watch on a charging stand that actually works with all band types (and it only needs to charge for a very short time since I wear my watch to bed). Don’t own the AirPods, but can’t imagine needing to charge all things in one spot at the same time. Am I missing something?
