My guess is we will see a spiritual successor to AirPower eventually. They implemented code in the latest iOS update to communicate charge levels with devices on the same charging pad and outright bought the AirPower trademark. AirPower was probably too ambitious, and we’ll probably see a scaled back version in the near future.

Well, it's kind of amusing in a way - I'm waiting for a similar announcement for the Mac Pro now.

I can see it now...

"We tried to find a way to build a computer with user-replaceable RAM, drives, graphics cards, and ports people actually use... but we've determined that it simply cannot be done."

Yet: iPod
MacBook Air: $1,800 piece of junk.
iMac: No Blu-ray.
Hockey puck mouse/Mighty Mouse/Magic Mouse/iPod Hi-Fi/iPod Socks
Cube
MobileMe
Big iPod touch

He killed Aperature. He depreciated Final Cut Studio. This is the man who erased Computer from Apple Computer. Jobs was a traitor to everything that made Apple (Computer) great.
Now Jobs killed Apple? Well, that's a.... new angle.

So now what with the AirPods wireless charging option?

Think I may return mine and get the non wireless version.
or every other wireless charging pad that's been on the market for years now.

The draw of airpower was wirelessly charging 3 individual devices on one single pad. That's it.
Check Amazon, you'll find options around the $15-20 range.

Or return them, or keep the originals if you have them. The choices are literally yours to make... but there are other options available.

Yeah, they’ve learned their lesson on that one. Ridiculous to announce something that wasn’t ready and fully functional. Just not smart.

I also think there is a lot more to this story, but we will never know.

I think people are hating more for the sake of hating than anything else.

How many projects have Apple announced and subsequently cancelled? In my memory as an Apple user since 2011, this seems to be the only one?

Yet we are close to a thousand replies here? It’s not like Apple actually released a product which was at risk of catching fire, and had to recall it. It’s ridiculous, and the outrage is way disproportionate to the gravity of the incident.

I won"t be as negative as most here. I actually rather prefer they cancel it than release a semi-functional product that will break after a while.
I wish they would hold the same standards to other things , like ....mm... the butterfly keyboard, etc..

Apple is feeling too much pressure to compete and maintain profit. early announcements? rushed products to market? a completely delayed and then canceled product? Quality is slipping. I know it's no longer possible but Tim and Co. need to slow the product pipeline down shareholders be damned.

It sounds like you're arguing semantics. Yes, the word "wireless" is technically accurate, but these charging mats don't fulfill the expected meaning of wireless compared to what I already know (wifi, LTE, airplay, etc). When something is called wireless, I expect it to work like all the other wireless devices I have.
It’s not just semantics, and your post demonstrates that well. It’s a matter of what’s possible given the physics of radio waves.

The long-range wireless charging you refer to—40 to 50 miles like cellular, or even just hundreds of feet like WiFi—is not possible given the power required to charge cell phones batteries. You might as well be hoping to see bacteria without a microscope.

The lies ;-)

So disappointing. Was really looking forward to a base that could wirelessly charge three of my devices.

I guess I'm glad they're not releasing it if it's not as functional as they need it to be. But, it's just kind of concerning that there was this much confusion, delay and setbacks over a charger. Like, this doesn't seem like it should be more of a technical feat then the iPad Pro or the HomePod. Why was it such a huge issue for Apple to complete?

This is a rare hardware disaster in the post iPhone era.

That blows my mind, honestly.
This was a 'people getting their hopes up' for something that isn't real yet, thing.

For me personally a mind blown statement from Apple would be them discontinuing all iphone production, period.

Oh Amazon, you can same day deliver me a wireless charger? Deal Sir.

I doubt anyone lost their job. They clearly couldn’t get it to work the way they wanted too.
... and printed the packaging???
Never ... there was something going on in late testing.
Maybe some major safety issue.

You don’t understand what Apple was trying to do with AirPower. Nobody has been able to do it. Apple thought they had it. They didn’t.

It was a “charge anywhere” mat. Place three devices anywhere on the mat, not just in very specific spots. Not 3 isolated coils, 22 overlapping coils.

No one has done it, and now we know Apple has given up trying.

Most people think this was like any other Qi charging mat. You are talking to a wall anyway. A lot of people don't have the skills or aptitude to distinguish a mosquito from a crane fly. I appreciate your effort for trying, but trust me I have tried and I am not getting anywhere. At least I know I am not the only one who understood what they were trying to do. for trying I give them a 10/10. For announcing the product too early I give them a 0. I hope they learned a valuable lesson here.

Courage. First project titan and now this. Crazy times at Apple. As someone has said before, they need the ipod nano and ipod touch just so they can practice releasing hardware. Hardware is different.

Poor compared to $80 Bose or B&O wired buds. Slightly poor compared to $20 wired Marley's. On par with the $10 wired bargain pile at best buy.
None of those has the convenience of AirPods, which make it worth the $160 to me. The ability to use either in the ear on calls and swap as needed is worth every penny. But poor is a moving personal definition.

I hear you, and I love Nomad too. Great company. I hope they continue to succeed.

The Nomad, however, does not work the same way that AirPower was going to work (so we believe). Nomad's wireless charging pad requires you to line up the device on the pad in a particular orientation and in a particular placement on the pad (the Watch charger on the Nomad is different because you can only place the watch in that one spot), so it requires the user to guess the placement (and granted, once you use it a few times, you get the hang of it). I've had the Nomad charging pad and others, and they all have this feature. Some work better than others.

Other than the "you're holding it wrong" marketing debacle, Apple would likely not release a product that required you to place something "just so" unless it was clearly marked on the device (i.e. Smart Keyboard case for iPad Pro).

Apple was not trying to mirror the Nomad or others (and again, I love Nomad as a company, so this is not a knock on them), as that is not a great experience. Apple was instead trying to create a pad that has yet to be invented, one that allows you to place you Apple Watch, AirPods, iPhone or any other Qi charging device in whatever orientation you want, on any place on the pad that you want, and have it charge. One reason charging pads have not taken off is this current limitation of having to place the device perfect on the pad. If it's off just slightly, it won't charge, and you likely won't realize it until you pick it up and see it didn't charge.

And now we are seeing why no other company has gotten this to work, because it's genuinely difficult. Apple spends years developing and engineering its products, and normally does not release them until it's exactly what they want. It's sad they could not make this work, as it would have been a game changer and it would have sold like crazy.

I hear you about placement and what-not. While the Nomad isn't Qi charging for the Apple Watch as we were led to believe the AirPower would be, IMHO, it still functions better as you do not have to remove bands or limit yourself to specific band types like you'd have to with AirPower to charge the device. That was a big selling point for me.

Agree on the game changer aspect and am disappointed it didn't work out, at least at the present time.

What does project titan (which was never announced to the public) have to do with this? They just released 3 new hardware products last week. Disappointing they pre-announced this like they did, but it doesn't have any correlation to project titan.

HAHAHA! YEAH! I actually stopped by an Apple Store and asked a “genius” about AirPower and then I was like, Oops LOL. And she was like all nice and said: The iPhone works with standard wireless charging pads and I was like: "Oh I know, because I’ve been using this feature for years with my Samsung.” Then I walked out. Awesome!

Wow, you sure told her.

Feel better now?

What went so wrong back and forth to where they thought they were in “the end zone” printing pictures of AirPower on AirPods gen2 retail box? That’s what I wonder

Airpods gen2 was made way earlier. See iPhone 8 present on the manual. After the release they can finally say the Airpower is cancelled, since the Airpower image was already on the box.

I believe Airpower was cancelled long time ago, but only announced after the Airpods gen2 because it would be weird to have image of Airpower image when it is already cancelled.
