In the end, it wasn't going to be a useful device for me anyway, since I only had one Apple product (my iPhone X) that could use it. Instead, I spent US$35 on an Anker Elite dual-12W/2.4A USB-A port charger and three Anker Powerline cables, which can be used by both my iPhone X and iPad Pro 10.5".

Grown adults are on here throwing a fit about a product Apple didn't release and wanting to return their headphones because they can't buy an "official" Apple charger. Yeah, I feel pretty confident that's ridiculous. This type of "outrage" is exactly why the term iSheep exists.
No, it’s the why the term Apple-hate exists lol.

95% of these astroturfers were never going to buy AirPower anyway, and 95% of those who claim they’re going to return their AirPods never bought them in the first place... no matter, Apple screwed up, they deserve all the bashing they get :)

That's a bummer. I wonder what made them decide to announce it prematurely. This is unusual behavior for Apple, so something must have been different for this product.

Maybe, just maybe, the reason we’re still so fixated about AirPower, which is an accessory, is because there is currently no hardware offering from Apple which excites.

The product is arguably a massive flop and the name makes no sense due to its inability to transfer power over the Air.

Tim Cook couldn’t care less any of those problems and will continue to develop a more hideous product just like the iPhone notched screen that seems like design by 6 years old kid.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because there is no current hardware like AirPower available anywhere in the known universe! :)

You seem unaware that AirPower wasn't intended to merely be yet another charging pad. You also seem unaware that the very box of AirPods showed an Airpower pad, not a random charging pad by another company. And you also seem unaware that Apple has a strong sense of brand loyalty amongst much of their customer base. You seem unaware of quite a bit, yet you bark at Apple fans who bought a product based on the premise that a specific Apple counterpart product would also be made available for sale.

Yes, how dare these people want to return an item. You should spend more time chastising strangers for not having identical purchasing habits as you.

A+

I'm aware of quite a bit. Specifically, I'm actually aware enough to not chug Apple koolaid like so many of you people do because you don't get your way. You're going to return AirPods just because an "official" Apple wireless charging pad doesn't get released? Sorry bud, that makes you look foolish and deserving of criticism. You couldn't even wait to see if/when Apple was going to release AirPower? Being impatient and not having the restraint to wait for something isn't Apple's fault, its yours.

Look, you wanna drop $200 on headphones just because of a stupid Apple charging mat, that's your business. When you get on a public forum and whine and cry about it, people are going to chime in with their two cents. Suck it up buttercup.

I raise you this. $59.99 at Ikea.

I’d love to know what the specific engineering issues were. Hopefully one of the insiders will leak the reason.

Word was they got too hot. Way too hot. They probably could've made it if it had case fans blowing when on full power but that would be "un-Apple-like".

I don't know, I just have to wonder why anyone would admit they're returning headphones only because a charging mat isn't going to be released. That's not something I'd be bragging about in a public forum lol. Apple definitely screwed up, but I also find it amusing when Apple releases something and people pre-order and dive in head first without even knowing what issues will be discovered with a product.

This has got to be an early build up on an April Fool’s joke where they release it April 1st and at first people think it’s a legit April Fool’s joke that it was released and then it ends up you can actually purchase it. It will have built on the hype and the new news of cancelling. It’d be in all the media circles for awhile. It’s like a long con.

Apple store online should allow in store or online return within 14 days.

Maybe check your order on Apple online and see if there is a selection to initiate return?

It’s not eligible for return. This was also stated when I made the purchase so fair enough. Even if Apple did accept an exchange, the difference in price is not going to change my life, whereas waiting several weeks/months for replacement AirPods is not something I want to deal with. Thanks though.

It’s a shame. Products in development get cancelled all the time. It was a mistake to announce this device before it was ready, but it was just a mistake. Hardly the end of the world as we know it. Sending air pods back on the basis of this news is ridiculous. Other charging pads are available. It says a lot about society that so many people are frothing over the cancellation of a piece of technology.

Clearly it wasn’t ready, and announcing it was an error of judgment, but these things happen. I’m sure at the time the decision was taken with best intentions. We all make mistakes...except of course all the perfect people who inhabit the internet waiting to pounce on anything that will feed their black hole of negativity.

I won’t return mine, but may have opted for the non-wireless case if I had known this was coming down.

Perhaps the positive outcome is Apple will build reverse wireless charging into future iPhones like the Galaxy S10 series.

I think we'll see this along with a Qi-standard Apple Watch Series 5. That will allow all devices to play nice and maybe we'll see a gimped AirPower, who knows. I'm curious if there's a way for Apple to change the firmware on Series 3/4 to allow for Qi, given that they already work on some unofficial chargers. The real tip-off, as RT'ed by Gruber, was that the AirPods were originally using the same modified Qi protocol as Apple Watch when the case was introduced, but used standard Qi on release. At that point, we should have known AirPower was vaporware.
