As I wrote previously, I can't even charge my iPhone with my MacBook. I can't even use my Magic Mouse with my Mac if it dies (they killed the Mighty Mouse with USB connection as well). I can't charge my iPhone while using my EarPods (which I could before). If I want to use a monitor with my MacBook I gotta buy a non-apple one. If I want to create a simple home network, can't do that either. Time Capsule? Nope, only local Time Machine now.

Huh? You can charge your iPhone just fine with a Macbook. All it needs is a USB port.

I bought mine precisely to replace the router supplied by my ISP - because it was absolute rubbish. Lost connection three times a day at least. Totally unreliable. And a used Airport Express is a very cheap and reliable way to play music on your home stereo equipment from all your Apple devices.

I don't really disagree, I'm sure yours was rubbish but most of us on here aren't really representative of the average user. And whilst most ISP routers aren't great, most do work well enough for most people. My ISP supplied one does OK, I use an AirPort Extreme in bridge mode because it's WiFi is faster and more stable but most of the people I know wouldn't be bothered by my ISP issued one. It's a shame because I really do prefer my Airport and it's a definite loss to the ecosystem. It'll make tech support to my parents who live abroad much more frustrating if I have to work around a non Apple router too.

I don't like greedy companies that only looks at their own profit and ignoring it's customers.

I'm an experienced IT guy so I know how to install third-party routers but take a look at the customers aged 40-80. Do you think they are going to look for third party accessories and install everything themselves?

HomePod is not going to make Apple any money. I think everyone knew that before it even launched since Siri is the most dumb assistant out there by far. So that works?? Not really.

Possibly non-sequitur of the day. Nothing above has a lick to do with Airport or anything I wrote.

BTW plenty of 40-80 year olds with PCs. I wonder how they get on the Internet? Amazing!

I replaced my AirPort set up earlier this year with a Ubiquiti UniFi setup. Haven’t looked back once (though I kept the AirPort express around for my stereo)

1x UniFi USG 3P + 1x UniFi Swich 8 150 PoE + 3x UniFi AP-AC-HD

I host the controller in a Digital Ocean Droplet that costs me $5/month, though you could easily swap that out with a Mac on Ethernet or a UniFi Cloud Key

I switched to Airport Extreme over 10 years ago, before I even switched to a Mac and iPhone. I was sick of having our Internet service randomly stop working and having to reboot the Linksys/DLink/etc. I have 4 AE now to cover my house and I still haven't had to restart one in over 10 years. At work, we keep getting the latest/greatest and someone still has to restart it every couple of weeks. I'm going to miss having something that just works.

I guess why sell Time Machine when you can try to charge them endlessly to backup to the cloud instead.

Hopefully, this causes them a support headache, but probably won't. When someone goes in with a wifi issue, then I'm sure they'll just blame the wifi provider. This new Apple sucks.

It's a damn shame, the Airport line is the most elegantly designed networking hardware I've ever used. I've gotten spoiled by the Airport app on my phone.

Gonna be a real bummer when I have to resort to browser-based configuration shenanigans in the future.

Edit: Even more spoiled by wireless Time Machine backups. Ugh.

Yes I'm sure. This so called eco-system is only software based today.

I know I can use AirPods and I do have them and enjoy them a lot. But it's still annoying that they cut basic stuff when Steve focused on the customer experience. Tim only looks at numbers.

It's great that we have cool watch bands and overpriced iPhone X cases but that is NOT something that Apple can do forever to keep the customer. Eventually people like me wants the whole Apple experience and that is what Apple had and does not have anymore.
I’d just like to announce that I am wearing some software-based ecosystem products in my ears and on my wrist at this time. I have discovered how to wear software.

Edit, just in case the point isn’t clear: The Mac is no longer the center of the ecosystem. It never will be again. The “center” is now iOS devices and specifically the iPhone, and it’s not going back.

The Airport has been a rock solid unit from day one. I've had friends go through routers every few months. The Airport just keeps going. I still have the original mac mini look-alike Airport Extreme in operation. I do like the newer model with 2.4 and 5 ghz modes. Most reliable router I have ever had!!

Mhm great. Still comes with an USB-A cable only though.
Probably because most iPhones are still sold to Windows users. And Apple has de-emphasized physically connecting iOS devices to Macs/PCs now. They are pushing wireless.

This says something about the future of Time Machine. While connecting a hard drive to backup a Mac directly will still work, Time Machine's convenience is that it works over the air. Whenever you're on your network, your Mac will back up.

There's been somewhat of a transition with iCloud Drive. Introducing versioning in macOS is another hint. Ultimately, users will be able to have their files backed up in iCloud with versions and deleted files accessible through a UI similar to what we know now as Time Machine.

I have been using the Eero system for over a year as a replacement. Much better wifi. I replace my airplay with Amazon Echo dots connected to the speakers I already own.

I honestly expect the majority of those people are using the router they were given by their ISP.

I've been in IT for decades and I used to have an 802.11n Airport Extreme with a Motorola modem because it got the job done well and I didn't want to pay rent to the cable company for a modem. I had just bought a fancy 802.11ac Linksys router to replace it when I signed up for Xfinity X-1 which gives you an 802.11ac Gateway whether you want one or not and frankly it works fantastic and with WPS, connecting stuff to it is even more simple than it was with the Airport utility. So I boxed the Linksys back up and returned it and sold the Motorola modem (I would have had to replace it anyway for the speeds I was being upgraded to). And I was just updated by Xfinity to a new model and it works even better.

Rene Ritchie just told me they’re introducing Pro Displays with the new modular Mac Pros. So today is not all bad news!!!

Freaking Apple™! RIP the best Wifi router I've ever owned. Check out the average customer rating from BestBuy.

Not everyone has the bandwidth for this, and it's also never a good idea to have a cloud service as your ONLY backup.

Is there an alternative to Airport express where you can Airplay to satellite speakers that are plugged into the 3.5mm jack.

This is my concern also. I loved the fact that I could get a little Airport Express and use it as a node for speakers in a room with Airplay. Even more the fact that I could use the digital SPDIF out if I wanted, and the monitors allowed it as an input (my Q Acoustics active speakers in the kitchen do). I’m sure I’m missing something here, but it seems odd that they’re finally getting around to Airplay 2 and simultaneously killing off one of the best ways of making it really work with almost any speaker.
