Apple Officially Drops 'Mac' Name from OS X Mountain Lion

Good, bad, or indiferent, I am curious if they will be dropping the "i" in front of iOS in a move to make both operating systems one in the same.

It's just a thought. Who knows what those guys have planned.

That would be a possibility, but I don't think it's too likely. I think this is more of Apple trying to slowly merge iOS and OS X.

Eventually there will be no difference between Mac OS X and iOS.

My guess is... when they roll around to OS XI (11), it will have merged with iOS into one operating system.

Who knows, by that point maybe we'll have those touchscreen iMacs that were rumored awhile back.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I like this. Apple is making a very good move here.

Makes sense when you think about it, after all it's a bit daft having a Mac Pro running Mac OS X... you really don't need the second Mac. At the same time it makes no sense to combine the operating systems until they genuinely are the same OS running different apps / UI's to meet the criteria of the form factor.

I can't see them just dropping the Mac name for no reason. They must have something planned. I don't know if I'd go as far to say OS X support on non-Apple hardware, but this is interesting...

OSX won't run on any other hardware other than Apple. The reason being it would have to support thousands and thousands of different types of hardware... which is a pain to develop for and it means apps in the app store would also need to be developed for multiple systems on which some machines would not be able to run some apps, causing confusion and annoying problems for the consumer.

Mac sales have continually each year been beating PC in increase and it would be silly to drop mac's for PC now.

End game

Maybe this is their endgame... By removing the "Mac" from the name, it can be installed on something other than a Mac. With Windows 8 not due out until the end of 2012, they could roll this out to all PCs by summer and cut it off at the pass. Everyone with a PC and an iPhone would be considering that upgrade.

Yeah, why drop "Mac" if the products Mountain Lion will run on are still Macs? MacBook Air, iMac, MacBook Pro, etc...

Because as Jobs said we are entering the Post PC era and iDevices are the future of Apple. This is just another step in bringing the Mac and the iDevices closer together and eventually phasing out the Mac as we know it.

I'm not concerned because Windows PCs will always be available for professional applications and content production, but for us who are content consumers this will only make the future Apple products even more user friendly for us.

It will be interesting to see where the Mac Pro goes in the next few months. I think that will tell us a lot about where Apple is heading.

Which is why I said I wouldn't go to far as saying OS X would run on non-Apple hardware. First off Apple wouldn't benefit much from using that other then expanding the # of those using their OS. And it would be too much of a headache dealing with specific drivers & different system configurations. All those (including myself) whoever attempted to run OS X on a non-Apple machine know this all too well.

We don't really know what they're doing. For all we know it could be a name change. But maybe eventually iOS and OS X will become one, but I personally can't see that happening anytime soon. Even though they have a lot in common, they are two different animals designed for two different systems.

All part of the process

With the launch of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion in the middle of last year, Apple was clearly trending towards dropping the 'Mac' From 'Mac OS X', which has been the name of the Macintosh operating system for more than 10 years.[...]

It's part of Apple's ongoing evolution. Remember when the company changed its name from Apple Computer, Incorporated to Apple Incorporated? That was in 2007. "Computer" had literally been the company's middle name for 30 years until then.

I'd argue that Apple has done more to change computing in the last 10 years than it did in its first 20 years of existence. Far more. An occasional name change here and there is part of the process.

Is it possible Mountain Lion will ship on the new rumored Apple television set? If you think about it, stuff like LaunchPad would actually be more useful in a living room situation than in your standard computing environment, and it would work better than shoehorning an app store on to the current custom ATV iOS layout.

Lion just came out in July of 2011. Is Apple doing annual updates now or what? This is getting ridiculous, why don't they fix all the bugs in their current OS first?

Lion is horrible and made Vista seem somewhat stable.. Had to go back and re-install SL on my wifes macbook because of the bugginess

Yea, SL is much more stable and Im really happy with it, and I really hope ML will continue in this...I just really hope it wont be like Lion.

The Macintosh (as Tim Cook prefers to call it) brand is still alive and well, though Apple seems to be focusing that term on hardware, instead of software.

I really that Tim Cook calls it "the Macintosh." Using its full name. Really takes you back and makes me think he cares more about the Mac than maybe even Steve Jobs did during his later years.

Call me crazy, but it's the small things that get me.

Sent from my iMacintosh. :p

What Apple has planned is this...
Total and complete integration of IOS to OS. Within the next 3 years your desktop or laptop screen (if a laptop is still around at that time) will look and feel exactly like your iPhone/iPad.

I'm saddened by this as I'm not a fan of Apple integrating the two. Apple is under the illusion that the popularity of their iPhone/iPad means that people also want their desktops to operate the same way. Wrong Apple Wrong. But.......... too late, because the damage is done.. everyone already owns an iPhone/iPad

Why do I get the sinking feeling that I'm going to hate Mountain Lion even more than I hate Lion? :(

Yeah dude, I had the same feeling after I viewed the video on Apple website. It all looks super cool...but the experience with OS will be totally different. As with the Lion. Its a mess...
