Names carry philosophical implications.

"The Macintosh (as Tim Cook prefers to call it) brand is still alive and well, though Apple seems to be focusing that term on hardware, instead of software." Makes perfect sense.

Unless it's a trick...

I'll just repeat the words the last girl I was dating said to me, "You're moving too fast for me."

Dropping "Mac" from Mac OS X in Mountain Lion is going to be different and will take some getting used to. I've known the day that the fine line between OS X and iOS would be blurred was upon us, I just didn't think that Mountain Lion would be bringing us more than half way there.

I know that Apple will more than likely revolutionize the desktop operating system by completely iOSifying it in the future. When they do, I just hope that they are ever so kind and at the very least leave us with a file system, the Finder menu bar, and the option to continue to use a mouse and keyboard.

I welcome the changes but some things are moving too quickly. And now I know how she felt. I guess Karma is a b**** after all.

OS X on iPad

I believe they have dropped the Mac part of the name because Mountain Lion won't just run on Macs, but on iPads too. I don't believe Apple are 'dumbing down' OS X and turning it into iOS and some people fear, but infact quite the opposite - iOS and Mac OS X merged together to run on both Mac and iPad.

Time will tell.

This would be cool though, I guess.

Assuming the current pace of iOS development continues (one major release per year), OS X and iOS will merge in mid-2016, the year that the tenth version of iOS is released. That way, instead of having Mac OS X and iOS X, we'll simply have...OS X.

Stop. Just stop. The only thing this means is a streamlining of brand names. The hardware is called Mac. Just like the iPhone OS is iOS and not "iPhone OS" the Mac OS is now just OS X.

There is nothing more to this story than that.

They're not going to run the same OS on an iPad and a desktop Mac. That just wouldn't make sense. What's a PC without a file browser?

People are making too many assumptions.

I don't want my iPhone to talk to my Mac, I don't want everything in the cloud. I want my devices to be separate and do what they each do best. This fully integrated world Apple is trying to build will be it's downfall.

You forgot 2010...

Fanboy in 2010: "iPad? I don't like that one bit. More like iTampon! Boooo!" Goes out and buys three.

Maybe this is their endgame... By removing the "Mac" from the name, it can be installed on something other than a Mac. With Windows 8 not due out until the end of 2012, they could roll this out to all PCs by summer and cut it off at the pass. Everyone with a PC and an iPhone would be considering that upgrade.

I think you're right about it running devices other the Macs, but it's more likely to be devices like the iPad rather than on non-Apple devices.

Time to get rid of your Apple gear and leave the forums! Seeya!

You just said what I was thinking. WWDC 2012 can't come soon enough.

OS X is not coming to iPads. iPads already have a MUCH more tablet-suited OS (and software-incompatible processor architecture!) tailored just for them. OS X, and OS X apps, on iPad would be a TERRIBLE experience. One thing Apple doesn’t like is selling terrible products.

The merger of Mac and iOS will never be complete, any more than the merger of iPhone and iPad will ever be complete. Overlap will be a trend (even desk-flat touch Macs for pros/creators some day?) but a slow one, and so far... one for the betterment of both products!

Yeah, why drop "Mac" if the products Mountain Lion will run on are still Macs? MacBook Air, iMac, MacBook Pro, etc...

Because a three-word name is unwieldy, Microsoftian, and blurs the kinship between iOS and OS X.

In fact, the full name with “Mac" would be really Microsoftian: Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Good gravy!

They should just call it "OS X.8 Mountain Lion." “OS X” or “Mountain Lion” for short.

I can't see them just dropping the Mac name for no reason. They must have something planned. I don't know if I'd go as far to say OS X support on non-Apple hardware, but this is interesting...

I agree with the part I bolded.

It's got to be driven by an evolution in branding so that not all of their computers that run OS X have to be branded "Mac". E.g., so they could come out with an "Apple Pro" or whatever.

BUT...

What's could be so different from their existing line that they wouldn't want to use the Mac branding and yet runs OS X not iOS?!?!

I'm kindof dreaming here but, what about an "iPad Pro"*-- iPad form-factor more or less, but runs the full-fledged OS X!

(* I assume Apple would come up with a better name)

I like Lion not as much as SL but the integration of Lion and all my iDevices is great, if apple can continue to keep the desktop feel for the desktop and bring more desktop features to the idevice platform i'll be happy.

Do you suppose there were some geeks back in Mesopotamia or wherever thinking, "Wheel? WTF?! I don't like this one bit!"

(full disclosure: I am an uber-geek, a data analyst, and an Apple customer since before most of you were born... but... come on.)

Lion just came out in July of 2011. Is Apple doing annual updates now or what? This is getting ridiculous, why don't they fix all the bugs in their current OS first?

If you read John Gruber's article on OSX Mountain Lion on his daringfireball.net blog, he says in there that OSX is moving to an annual release cycle. This is direct information he got after a private briefing with Apple's top brass.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

This doesn't bother me in the slightest. Holding on to the mac is a vestige of a desire to be seen as different from the norm, distinct from the mainstream and not part of the beige box brigade. Well, this still might come as a shock to some but I'll say it anyway.

Apple IS the mainstream. They are what the other tech companies aspire to. They are the worlds most valuable company and along with Disney and Coca-Cola properby the most recognised brand in the world.

And those who have jumped on the bandwagon, realised that we weren't BS'ing when we told them for years that Apples products just worked better have no romantic attachment to Mac. Their alligenace is to Apple and whatever it produces. Sure, they could keep the mac name alive for us old schoolers but Apples philosophy since Jobs came back has always been looking to where the puck is going to be, not where it was.

It's why they are the leaders and expecting them to keep one foot in the past is not going to let them to continue to lead and give us the products we didn't know that we needed till they made them.

"what would happen if a MacBook Air and an iPad 'hooked up'"?

Could Jobs have accidentally hinted at the idea of a detachable screen that turns into an iPad?
That certainly would work in an environment where the OS were unified.
