Names carry philosophical implications.
"The Macintosh (as Tim Cook prefers to call it) brand is still alive and well, though Apple seems to be focusing that term on hardware, instead of software." Makes perfect sense.
Unless it's a trick...
Names carry philosophical implications.
Time will tell.I believe they have dropped the Mac part of the name because Mountain Lion won't just run on Macs, but on iPads too. I don't believe Apple are 'dumbing down' OS X and turning it into iOS and some people fear, but infact quite the opposite - iOS and Mac OS X merged together to run on both Mac and iPad.

I believe they will drop "Mac" from the Macbook, iMac, MacPro etc....
New names are coming....
You forgot 2010...Fanboy in 1984: "Macintosh? I don't like this one bit." Goes out and buys one.
Fanboy in 1996: "Power Mac? I don't like this one bit." Goes out and buys one.
Fanboy in 1997: "iMac? I don't like this one bit." Goes out and buys one.
Fanboy in 2001: "iPod? I don't like this one bit." Goes out and buys five.
Fanboy in 2007: "Apple Inc.? I don't like this one bit." Buys 1000 shares.
Maybe this is their endgame... By removing the "Mac" from the name, it can be installed on something other than a Mac. With Windows 8 not due out until the end of 2012, they could roll this out to all PCs by summer and cut it off at the pass. Everyone with a PC and an iPhone would be considering that upgrade.
I don't want my iPhone to talk to my Mac, I don't want everything in the cloud. I want my devices to be separate and do what they each do best. This fully integrated world Apple is trying to build will be it's downfall.

Yeah, why drop "Mac" if the products Mountain Lion will run on are still Macs? MacBook Air, iMac, MacBook Pro, etc...
I can't see them just dropping the Mac name for no reason. They must have something planned. I don't know if I'd go as far to say OS X support on non-Apple hardware, but this is interesting...
You forgot 2010...
Fanboy in 2010: "iPad? I don't like that one bit. More like iTampon! Boooo!" Goes out and buys three.
Lion just came out in July of 2011. Is Apple doing annual updates now or what? This is getting ridiculous, why don't they fix all the bugs in their current OS first?

Perhaps something is coming that will run OS X and not be called a Mac.![]()
