How come Apple doesn't tout that web pages (html type) render so much better on a Mac.

Has anyone seen the type rendering in Windows? It's awful!

As a web developer designing on a Mac, when I test in Windows I always cringe on how bad the type looks after I am used to seeing it on a Mac.

Often my clients have the same reaction when they compare them side by side.

It has actually made a few people I know switch.

Try any browser other than Internet Explorer.

iPod/iTunes/iPhone/iPad have proved to be pretty good “ads” for Mac in themselves.

(I know the Get a Mac ads worked, but they annoyed me. Only a handful were actually funny to me. Of course, they weren’t aimed at me!)

Maybe since the current Windows OS is much better Apple feel they're no longer kicking an opponent that's down and now need to show some muscle.

Nah, it's just that the "I'm a Mac" ad was designed for a company with 3% market share fighting a company with 90% market share.

They're a very david-vs.-goliath concept.

But that's not the case any more. Within some markets that Apple tries to sell to (like, say, new college students) their market share is now very close 50%.

So they need a different approach because they're not the underdog anymore. They're an equal competitor which demands a different kind of ad.

It's a matter of personal taste, isn't it?

I personally don't care either way, but people who are used to the way fonts render in IE often react negatively to the way it looks on my Macs, describing it as "smeared", "blurry" etc. Especially Verdana.

Yes I guess on could call it "taste" but from an esthetic point of of view I think it is hard to argue. One may be "used to it" but that does not make it better.

Here is an example:

WINDOWS

MAC

Hard to argue that Mac version is not cleaner, clearer and smoother and easier on the eyes.

Yep, I think when the average consumer buys these products they enjoy them they ask themselves why don't they try out Apple's computers as well?

Except iPad buyers (who likely aren't about to buy a computer as well) maybe it's because the dozen electrical stores nearest them don't sell Macs.

I noticed you removed your specs form your sig.

Did you get that Alienware computer finally or are you still brooding?
I've given up on new computer hardware for the next few months. Computex can't come any sooner.

I'm at least looking into 2011 for a new notebook. My MacBook is back in the shop for repairs though. I'm patient given the extraordinary treatment the local AASP is giving me. I'd rather support them than corporate. It seems that when one thing is repaired more problems show up.

The iPod Touch with camera has some light interest from me but otherwise Apple is another one of those boring technology companies along plenty of others for me.

Windows fonts better than Mac?! Hardly. Mac fonts have been a preferred standard in the print industry, and the example above demonstrates that they are smoother (not blurry). Could this be the use of vector graphics?

Apple is relatively interesting on the software side, releasing different stuff than just more syntax sugar.

OpenType is on par with TrueType. Its just that Microsoft uses their ClearType rendering system and it suuucks in comparison.

Also, the Cocoa libraries responsible for font rendering are also responsible for printing.

Those were simple screen shots, unmodified on the first web site that opened in Windows 7, IE 8 (Firefox looks the same on Windows).

I thought from this comparison it was obvious how much better the Mac fonts render than the Windows fonts.

Just saying, that I would use that as a comparison of Mac benefits.

My clients often agree. One client (long-time Windows user) is getting his first Mac delivered today, and that was after I showed him his website on a Mac vs Windows comparison.

Cool, didn't know that, thanks for the info :).

Interesting, the thought never occurred to me to examine the difference bet Mac and Windows fonts on websites. I try to use imbedded fonts versus web standard as imbedded fonts offer more options and look much better. Checking out my sites/work on windows 7 and snow leopard, I do notice a difference now. Even the little things... :)

Better hardware? Design, yes of course, but hardware no way!
Just what I was thinking. Since the Intel switch, claiming the hardware is any better is a flat out lie. Its the same stuff you find in basically every other laptop out there.

I enjoyed them at first, and found some quite funny.
But they got old after a while, and lost interest in them.
I'm GLAD they were discontinued and removed from the Apple website.

They are definitely classics...

:p

+1

Until apple starts giving us better graphic cards, they will always stay second in the hardware department. I hope they blow us away with the next revision of the mac mini and 21 inch iMac. I won't get my hopes up though.

I was talking more about the developments in things like GCD and OpenCL...

But Ok.... :S
A bit of perk on a 5400 RPM hard drive and useless on my GMA X3100.

There is no reason to purchase a new Mac if it doesn't offer me any benefits over my current one either. Safari and iTunes being my most used Mac applications. If I'm going to to any heavy lifting I'll do it under Windows where the hardware is hilariously cheap and I can still run iTunes. Windows Media Center is extremely important to me as well.

Could this be the use of vector graphics?

No, this is the result of having to make a choice. Sometimes a font pixel will have to over-lap 2 "real world" screen pixels.

So what to do? Take a look:

http://damieng.com/blog/2007/06/13/font-rendering-philosophies-of-windows-and-mac-os-x

Windows makes it pick one. Everything has crisp lines, but that pixel is actually half-a-pixel away from where it should be. This causes problems when you multiply it a thousand times. (See the image in the example link.) Basically, the line of text is either a little too short or a little too long from what it should be.

Macs tell it to stradle the line. This means the text is the exact right shape, but it'll be a little fuzzy.

This is why graphic designers prefer Macs...what you see on the your screen is what the printer will give you. On Windows, well, it may change slightly when you print.

But yes, the Windows version is sharper. If you're someone just reading the web, that might be better. If you're someone creating content (especialy content that's going out to paper and not to a screen) then the Mac way is clearly better for you.

And as a bonus, now you can explain why more designers use Macs the next time someone says "But I can get Photoshop for Windows!" to you.

320M on the Mac Mini(2x better than the 9400m) and likely ATI mobility 5XXX line across the new iMacs(everything will be an improvement with the exception of the 4850, as the 5850 hardly any better).

That's what I'm saying, people prefer what they're used to.
I wasn't talking about taste as in "having good taste".
I'm OK with OS X font rendering, I've grown accustomed to it now. But some people aren't. A quick search yielded a few hits regarding the matter. Examples...

ZDNet: Vista puts Mac OS X font rendering to shame

Coding horror: What's wrong with Apple's font rendering?

Like I said, they're opinions. Like ******s, everyone's got one. It's all subjective. Some prefer slightly aliased fonts on the screen, for the crispness. Others prefer a look closer to that of print.
