Yes but it would be 10x easier if the dev had a hard device to work from, I have some coding experience and there will be many bugs in every App submitted.

So what? This is just the way things are right now. It's simply a small hiccup which will be resolved in due course in a couple weeks or so.

Sure but Apple essentially did the same thing when they didn't include a floppy drive in the iMac -- and that was at a time when floppies were about the only way consumers had to save date externally. That didn't hurt the iMac at all. Lack of Flash hasn't hurt the iPhone or Touch so there really its really hard to say lack of Flash is a deal killer.

I have an 8GB Quad Core PC (own build just over a year ago) and I fitted floppy drive in it :)

I still regard the Floppy as a if all else fails (hard drive ect goes down) you can still get into the machine via a boot floppy disk!

It's my get out of jail card.

You can probably boot the PC from a USB memory stick depending on the motherboard. I find it easier than a floppy drive as a last resort.

With an iPad, I'd guess you can just do an iTunes restore to your last synced backup.

Yeah you probably right :)

It's just it's nice for it to be there if ever it's needed.
But I do finally feel perhaps next PC I won't bother fitting one :D

I never like to take my options away to get out the Poo and a number of times it's been good to have when you go round someone's house and they only have an old machine.

Something many of us forget I feel, esp in the workplace. Non IT firms tend to keep PC's that are ancient but still do the job.

That's great but you are deflecting from your original argument. The fact you still use floppies has zero to do with the fact Apple made a serious bet not putting a floppy on the iMac. It could have bankrupted the company but instead the iMac revived it. Similarly it gambled not putting Flash in the iPhone OS and was not only unscathed, it now accounts for nearly 50% of its revenue.

Whether you still use a floppy or cotton to Flash is irrelevant. The fact remains consumers generally will forgo features if the overall product is compelling enough.

Agree, though perhaps a tiny bit different as there was an alternative storage medium on offer, wheras now other have got to comply, but hey, we'll see :)

Back on topic. I have a general question.

If you write an App for apple (not that I ever have or probably ever will do) do they hold any rights to that app?

Say you wrote a superb must have app that everyone regarded as a must have app.

Are you free to also port/sell it onto other stores, say on an Android or Windows marketplace so your app runs on other platforms also?

Vista, and Windows 7 can do a "live" boot from the distribution
DVD into the recovery environment. Most (all?) Linux distros can
do a live boot from either the distro or a live CD.

All of the other system management utilities (various firmware
update programs, etc) that I'm familiar with now ship as .ISO
files that you can burn to CDs, since floppies are not required
by Windows.

Yes, you can port it to wherever you like, but you aren't allowed to sell the iPhone/Touch/iPad app itself anywhere except the iTunes App Store.

Yes, this has saved me a few times recently.

I wouldn't agree with my reservations being characterized as FUD. It's just that I am withholding judgment until the iPad is more mature.

There have been many tablets and none have been successful. There is also little evidence that the public wants this type of device. Why will Apple get this right? At least with the iPhone there had already been successful smart phones on the market.

I have nothing against the iPad (unless it is taking away resources from the Mac - and I have no evidence of that). Just as being an early adopter can be exciting and is legitimate, waiting until a device and platform matures before purchasing is also legitimate. No FUD coming from here.

Nah. It's just FUD. For many, myself included, it'll be a home run on day 1 even if iPhone apps are the only one running on that day (which won't be the case). Size alone will ensure that.

Not even one comment about that.

I guess it's true that Mac owners are not interested in games then!

Or they don't want to see their new device dirtied by being made into a populare handheld gaming console?

Strange, thought there would have been some comments to the fact that pretty much half the software being pushed by writers at the moment are games.

Seems an ideal thing to become the next hand held top end portable console.

Never mind!

"Trust me." Yeah sure. Who are you? Take it easy. Have you held the iPad in your hands and used it? The answer is clearly NO. So your suppositions are just as phony as everybody's, including me, who have not actually used an iPad.

There are still a lot of unknowns and there will be until it is released.

Take a deep breath. It's OK for others to have differing opinions.

You can have as many different opinions as you what...it doesn't make any of them any closer to correct.

There are no unknowns, at all. Start accepting it.
