I've yet to see a data center designed to only be cooled by geothermal energy.
Exactly... There's a first for everything...
Edit to add: where is the power coming from in NC then?

Help me out here, I just don't know.
What is a "data center"?
If there are different kinds, what kind is Apple building in NC?

Here is a link to an artical about MS data center in Texas. It should give you a good understanding of what a data center is and what is involved in settting one up.

As for Apple, I don't think they have said what this one will be used for.
what's the start up cost for building one? how much per kw of electricity? what's the tax rate? etc etc

That is one BIG data center.

Does that mean this time next year, Mobile Me won't be so freakin' slow in NY? I'm soooooo close to dropping it. I can't stand how slow my iDisk is anymore, or iWeb publishing. I've convinced myself for 3 years that MobileMe is the way to go, but I don't know how much more I can take. I'm slowly losing my patient with it.

Isn't a data center going to be mostly hardware and few jobs?
I still reckon Iceland or some other northerly region with lots of cold air and geothermal hotness would be an excellent place to build datacentres

Wasnt MobileMe introduced last year?
MobileMe was but .Mac was around before MobileMe.

Well it is a data center. Putting a data center in a different country wouldn't help the bandwidth in the US much.![]()
They could, but the costs would be passed directly on to consumers (or the company would avoid the area entirely). How many people would be willing to pay 25-50% more for the stuff they buy from Wallyworld? The government requiring a salary level. They already do with minimum wage. Can they demand something higher?
