I couldn't agree with you more, mikaelwahss.

Dealing with photography and RAW files, backup DVDs fill up real quick. A Blu-Ray burner would be of great benefit to me. I don't buy Apple's excuse for not including them when other laptops already do (if the pricing really is so high they could at least let buyers have the option of choosing between a regular superdrive or a Blu-Ray burner. This is after all a "pro" machine).
(I don't even have any Blu-Ray movies, so I couldn't care less about viewing them on my Mac).

So many things disappoint me with the new MacBook Pro: glossy screen (useless for pro photographers), just one Firewire connector (means I have to daisy-chain all my Firewire devices and have them all turned on, even if I just want to use the last device in the chain) and that silly black frame around the display along with black keyboard. The old minimalist all-silver design works for me!

Nope, my Powerbook G4 is staying for a while longer.
I was expecting a "pro" update, but the only professional thing about the new MacBook "Pro" is its pricetag. Other than that it's a very expensive consumer laptop.

Have you thought of trying this?

Arn missed the part about the 17" laptop that was mentioned in questions and answers.

The answer was it was being updated today as well...and the store reflects this statement as it says "new" beside the 17 inch models.

However, ironically, these 'new' models appear to still have the old FAULTY Nvidia cards in them. Why is this?
They are also slower than the 15" - even the custom order does not match the custom built 15" in speed.

So I would love to hear what happened here. Not much on the mainstream tech media about this yet...suprised Arn hasnt brought it up in this last post he made...quite serious flaw on Apples part I would think. ;)

Peace

p.s.
Also in the questions and answers Phil, I believe it was, said that iTunes was there for HD movies after being asked about Blu Ray.

Its not about licensing folks...its about Apple pushing its agenda. Phils comment immediately after Steves gives it away. Look above at how they handled the 17"...Apple does what suites them.

For the time being what suits them is the consumer market.
The macbook pro, while it will be bought by pros, is missing a piece for the main pro segment. (or pieces.)
The macbook pro is for the consumer who bought the macbook and who own digital camcorders with firewire and firewire harddrives.

Apple said the macbook was their #1 mac seller - now they got to get those consumers to spend more and upgrade to the macbookpro. So its a "pro" consumer machine. Or a artist advanced enthusiast machine...just 'pro' is shorter, and they can still try to get both markets...while the time last. ;)

I already have an Apple NetBook, it is called a 12" PowerBook running Tiger, it is fast, light and lasts 4 hours on a single charge! Have owned it since new but you can pick them up on eBay for £350 ;)

I would have liked to see Steve answer the Question how consumers are supossedb to connect there consumer video camera ( of wich 95 % only have Firewire ) to there consumer Macbook.

I just don't get it.

Its clear.

The macbook is the #1 selling machine.
They want more money. They want all the people buying macbooks to buy a pro.

The pro is not geared for pros or it would be to much $$$. (though pros will still buy it.) The emphasis, (glossy only and all) is to make money.

Like how they now have around 50% less parts in the macbook because of the new manufacturing process. (Do we see the cost savings in this...not one drop.)

Steve is out to get your money, and hes doing a good job. ;)
You want blu ray, etc. Time to make your own company or hope someone in the pro world pops up to be the new market leader for the pro market. :)

Peace

During the Question and Answer session of yesterday's media event, Steve Jobs responded to a number of questions of interest. The Apple Core blog summarizes the answers. Of note:

Blu-Ray - "It’s great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we’re waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace."

TouchScreen Display - "so far it hasn’t made a lot of sense to us."

Netbook (low cost laptop) - "a nascent market that’s just getting started."

While Apple did drop the price of the lowest-end MacBook yesterday to $999, that model retains the old MacBook architecture and casing. Readers should note, however, that the new entry level MacBook ($999) now ships with a SuperDrive. The previous $1099 MacBook contained only a Combo Drive.

Although it would be cool to be able to burn 50GB of data to a disc, I have to say: I hate these optical laserdisc solutions... I won't even buy one blueray movie. For what? Just to see it becomes obsolet in 5 years because the next disc technology arrives and then to rebuild my library? No sir. I go to the movies and at home I'm satisfied with rental DVDs. When the brd players get cheap perhaps I'll get one, but only if there is absolutely no online rental system available here in germany.
discs pfff... they are so 90ies

The Blu-ray issue was the one thing that made sense all day.

Sony has some stupid licensing prices. Plus for me I have never had any luck with the Sony superdrives. I have always had to replace them with the Pioneer superdrive. I am glad they left that out.

My personal opinion is that blu ray is just a waste, really standard def movies are fine. I wouldn't need to see the new Saw movie in HD to realize it stinks.

I agree, imagine how much a Mac would cost with a Blu-ray drive that at least half of us wouldn't want anyway

You can watch your old dvd's with bluray drive, so there's no need to rebuild your library. I have lots of old dvd's and I have no plans to buy them again in bluray format, but when I buy or rent brand new movies I choose the bluray instead of dvd.

yeah, they just called their back in '05 working on the Powermac G6

You do know that pioneer make blu-ray drives don't you ?
Apple not putting Blu-ray is an embarrassment, they could at least support it, so at least people could buy the drives themselves.

FYI, prices in AU have increased as much as $400

AU$3999 for the highend (not BTO) 15" MBP = no sale from me

"We're waiting" !
Come on Steve: when have you stopped leading in creative AV world?

You sell all kind of HD products, but you fail to supply the faithful with tools to distribute our creativity to the masses.
Missed opportunity.

Are you driving me towards Adobe Encore, Toast and FastMac?

Please, do reconsider and LEAD.

"A common misconception is that leaders think they lead, whilst in reality they are driven by those who follow".

Those questions, to me, really seem to me like fluff and even then there are a lot of questions that need to be answered.

What happened to the firewire cable?

Why, in todays economy did you decide to raise prices?

You talk about expansion and growth yet you purposely hinder apples potential at the same time. Right now is a time to pounce and you point it out but you drop the ball. Why? Do you like apple to be the whipping boy?

Have you ever actually used your products Steve Jobs? Do you really believe glossy on a pro works outdoors when doing jobs on the fly?

What the hell is up with the Mac Mini?

Why only drop the 3 year old Macbook by just 100$?

Why did you not update the 17" pro? Why only half ass the line?

Why only do a 24" monitor? Have you noticed the rest of your line has not been touched in years?

That hub only supports Firewire 400 while I would need one which supports a mix of 800 and 400 devices if I was to get the new MacBook pro with just a single 800 port.
I also read somewhere that when daisy-chaining both 400 and 800 devices connected to the same port you get the lowest speed (400) -I hope this isn't correct!

In that case I'm better off with my Powerbook G4 which has separate 400 and 800 ports!
Perhaps the solution for getting a "pro" Mac these days is to buy a top of the line PC laptop (with truly professional features and specs) and install MacOSX on it.
If this is the way Apple's chosen to move along from now on I think they've started to dig their own grave (at least when it comes to hardware) and can only expect to sell their MacOS operating system to the professionals who like working with Macs.

I thought the "iTunes store offers HD downloads" comment was funny... yeah, those are available worldwide, right... in most countries outside USA the only way to watch HD is to buy bluray movies from store. No downloads, not even HD television broadcasts. It surely makes us feel better to know that iTunes offers HD downloads in USA and because of that bluray in MBP isn't necessary.

Yes, and Apple's 'HD' downloads only contain SD sound

touchscreen 'so far it hasn’t made a lot of sense to us'
touchscreen no sense WTF we are screaming for touchscreen tablets pfff
A few vocal people may be "screaming for tables" but the market in general has shown that tablet PCs are a small niche market. They make great props for Sci-Fi channel shows, but they're not exactly burning up the sales charts. This is what Jobs means when he says that the tablet idea "hasn't made a lot of sense to us", i.e. "doesn't look like it'd make any money".
