Spot on Carniphage. It seems a few people on this forum didn't read that article past the pretty graph about how signal strength is mapped to bars. Folks, that wasn't the point of his article! He starts that section, 'Before we dive in…' Dive in to what? The actual data about signal loss when you bridge the antennas!

Sadly more people here are just rabid fanboys. Just go by the facts, love my macbook pro but they really screwed up this iphone version. And finding out they've been boosting signal levels in the UI is just sad.

Really...

It seems simple enough. If you don't believe it can be fixed by a software update, take it back. Otherwise bitchin won't do much for you other than getting it off your chest. Take it back or get a case and quit your bitchin.

I don't really see how it can just be a misrepresentation of the signal strength if people are reporting dropped calls and data grinding to a halt.

Exactly. Apple thinks that we're stupid. Think that they can just tweak the meter to display more bars and we'll believe it. But people have been experiencing dropped calls and 3G data stopping immediately as soon as they touch the antenna, which it's impossible to not touch it if you are holding it.

So what about the people who replicated this issue in an Apple store, which is right next to an AT&T store, inside of a mall, with a cell tower on top of it?

My local Apple store has some of the best AT&T coverage where I live, and I was able to make the iPhone 4 drop down to zero bars.

What a lazy cop-out to avoid issuing a recall.

return it.

Noone I know has experienced any reception issues whatsoever... only about ~15 iphone 4s..

Southeast Michigan.

You now know one- me, SE MI... And that is with 3G data connection problems, not Signal strength issues. Lastly, if you are saying you have had ZERO 3G data outages in the last week in SE MI- I do not believe you, at all.

Wow. Just… wow. I’m gonna say this knowing I’ll probably get a timeout for it (quite frankly I don’t care), but you are an idiot. What the heck does this issue have to do with anyone’s political affiliations, and where do you get off using derogatory names for those that protest what they perceive as injustice (remember, liberals are far more likely to protest publicly than conservatives, if you just look at history)? You need to take a good hard look at your own shortcomings, because posting stupid things like that just makes you look absolutely moronic.

So true, I was wondering where on earth that came from as well jW.

Yeah, I asked if i could return the phone and they said no.

Print the :apple: letter, bring in your box to AT&T, and kindly ask for a full refund. You will get it.

I guess my dropped calls and ZERO 3G data is an illusion then?

Droid X - here I come. No more Apple products for me. I drank the kool-aid and started buying everything Apple - I should have known better.

Apple was supposed be freedom but actually it turned out to be a micro-managed cluster....

Again -

Changing the #s on a speedometer doesn't mean your car is operating any differently.

Changing the indication of how many bars represent the signal you have doesn't change how the phone operates.

This is new paint on an old car.

Oh the infamous car analogies.

its funny how everyone became engineers...
stop writing things that you have no idea about.
IP4 works just fine

Honestly, you need to stop whining about the bull**** response from Apple and return your iPhones for a full refund.

Nothing will be fixed until the iPhones are retuened in their hundreds of thousands. Apple will then fix the hardware issue and you can get a new iPhone then. If you don't return the iPhone within 30 days, you'll be left with a lemon, which will never work and will be worth no more than a 2nd hand iPod Touch.

What odds can I get on the iPhone 5 not having such a crap antennae design ?? They know it will be the first thing the reviewers check, and the product will bomb if it fails.

Cell towers radiate outwards, not down. In the shadow of a tower on the roof, inside a commercial building of concrete and steel and cabling, may not be a particularly strong signal area.

Why would someone lie about whether or not they have reception issues..... we picked up 3 on launch day in Troy around 2pm, after reports of the "antenna issue" began to surface. I tested the 3 of them in the mall parking lot, on US23 northbound towards fenton, in fenton and tested my own in saginaw. No issues what-so-ever. I have polled my friends to see if they are experiencing these issues - they are not. Said friends are in Saginaw, Bay City, Flint, Ann Arbor, Clarkston, and Waterford.

so.. yeah.

While I don't agree with every premise here - this is a great post and worthy of reading.

Sam, I appreciate the comment. Believe me, I wanted this phone to be perfect. The speed, battery life and iOS4 are great. I waited 5 hours in the reservation line for it. However, I can not accept locking myself to an AT&T contract for two yeas with a faulty phone.

Perhaps you should stop writing things that you have no idea about. YOUR iP4 might work just fine. That doesn't mean everyone's does.

FWIW you never had 5 to begin with.

But an iPhone 3GS has 5 bars and doesn't drop calls at the exact same location.

Glad they finally said something even if its ludicrous - printing out the information, currently backing up the iP4 for boxing up and returning to AT&T this afternoon.

I'll use my phone upgrade credit when the 4.5 comes out in a couple months.

I really haven't had any problems making and getting calls on the phone. Even in low service areas. However after looking at the layout of the antenna I can see why there might be problems. Now it has been a long time since I have had any electronics classes but I seem to remember that it was not a good thing to let antennas touch. As there is the possibility of attenuation or even worse a canceling effect. This does not happen if the antennas are electrically separated, but when you hold the phone you are passing the signal through your hand to the other antennas, one or both. I have tried holding the phone with either hand and it does not seem to be worse with the left hand. Even when cupping the phone with the right there is signal loss. Now my experience is not as dramatic as what is on youtube. But I don't have a high moisture content to my hands which electrically is a factor in how well you conduct. So if you have sweaty palms you are providing a better "short" between antennas. :DThis is why people with edge protecting cases report little or no problem with signal loss. If you look closely to each antenna is electrically protected from the other, as I am sure each is tuned to carry a specific signal. Even in the ifixit tear down this is really obvious.

I would try holding the phone with rubber gloves on and see if you are still having problems. Most likely you will have non. Which means this is one of those engineering a "mistakes". I like talking to engineers, but sometimes getting them understand that calculations and the real world don't always match is hard. So what they had calculated for the attenuation/canceling via hand holding of the phone probably where an ideal condition. Then when people where testing them, they needed camouflage, so every tested phone was being held in a case, effectively insulating the antennas from the hand. :)

Sounds like apple should just give everyone edge protectors for free.

No, return it. And, quit crying like a little girl. You sound like rushy boy.

when a product is FLAWED and designed improperly, it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to fix it, not for the consumer to just say "oh well.. i guess i'll deal with it".

i assure you this issue is not going to go away, and will lead to an influx of returned phones, and bad PR for apple. i dont care what you have to say, but i hope apple is paying attention to how many base customers it just pissed off.

Yet I have had nothing but problems in Ann Arbor, and so has my wife. There you go.
